✔ Pride and Prejudice is a six-episode 1995 British television drama, adapted by Andrew Davies from Jane Austen's 1813 novel of the same name. Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth starred as Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy, respectively. Produced by Sue Birtwistle and directed by Simon Langton, the serial was a BBC production with additional funding from the American A&E Network. BBC1 originally broadcast the 55-minute episodes from 24 September to 29 October 1995. The A&E Network aired the series in double episodes on three consecutive nights beginning 14 January 1996.

I absolutely loved Mr Bennet in this production. His scenes with Lizzie were everything from comic to tender to philosophical. Benjamin Whitrow is much missed, he was wonderful.

Big deal. Same name. Anyway, tommoncrieff1154, yes he did that part beautifully as well. All embraced their roles and portrayed their characters so well that you thought you were in the scenes with them. I don't know at whom I laughed more: Mr. Collins, Mrs. Bennet, Miss Bingley, Lydia, Mary's horrid singing and the dogs howling at it...the 2005 film can't hold a candle to this version.

RUBBISH - no true Austen lover should be giving this house room. Jane Austen must still be spinning in her grave over the thought of Mr Darcy jumping in the lake. She did not write bodice-ripping yarns! Leave that sort of rubbish to Cartland, Collins and their ilk.

They made one mistake which I didn't spot until watching it several times! In Darcy's letter he tells of his dealings with Wickham and we see him giving Wickham a cheque for £3,000 for which he is "exceedingly obliged". The next we see of Wickham is his attempted elopement and Darcy gives his motive as his sister's fortune plus revenge. Revenge for what? We know that there had been a further meeting when Darcy refused to give Wickham the living as he had already been recompensed with the £3,000 but this version completely misses that out. A bit confusing for anyone not familiar with the book. That aside, I totally agree with you, this is by far the best adaptation of Pride and Prejudice with excellent casting.

This is the Andrew Davies version; 'the' definitive version hands down!! Bar none. Not the 1940 version -- not the 2016 version; or, any variation. This is timeless literally transforming you to 1800s England. I watched it premier on PBS - bought the VCR - then the DVD - now stream it! This is perfection!! It won BAFTA but should've won EVERY award - and a Special Oscar!

The 1980 was good. Most do not like that because David Rhintol's Darcy was so reserved and snobbish, but that was How Elizabeth saw Darcy in the novel. He was actually very shy and sadly because of his money was used to women like Mrs. Bennet throwing their daughters at him, so he became over cautious to the point of being a little jaded and over judgmental about it but he was really a good guy. Mrs. Bennet did deserve what he thought about the Bennet family, so did Lydia. Jane and Lizzy didn't. In contrast Andrew Davies wanted Darcy to be sexy and Lizzy fighting an attraction to him because of what she overheard he said about her. Lizzy in the novel, however despised Darcy until she found out she had misjudged him, and she did not grow to love him, until he saved Lydia's reputation to protect Jane and Lizzy's.

But needless to say, the 1995 IS better than the 1980 I feel because the chemistry between Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle was off the charts because they had really fallen for each other at the time. The 1980 was still truer to the novel.

Didn't Tom Ward (the last actor shown) play Col. Fitzwilliam? He was Darcy's cousin. They have the name as Lt. Chamberlayne. I don't remember anyone by that name.

One of the entries is totally incorrect regarding the so called Lt Chamberlayne. The pictures are of Anthony Calf who played Colonel Fitzwilliam in 1995 P&P. Tom Ward was Lt Chamberlayne but those are not his pictures. Ironically Tom Ward went on to play Colonel Fitzwilliam in the 2013 spin off "Death comes to Pemberley" Also I'm pretty sure that it is Lucy Davis and not Lucy David who played Maria Lucas

He visto casi todas las versiones q se han hecho de esta novela, una de mis favoritas y ninguna de ellas puede rivalizar con ella. El casting, la ambientación, la actuación de cada uno de los protagonista y fundamentalmente cómo se ha podido captar con detalle el recuerdo de esa época. Nos lleva de la mano a vivir está historia q para mi, x lejos , es la mejor versión q se ha hecho de ella.

I haven't watched all the Keira Knightly film. I just can't, tried several times and can't bear it. Even the start is depressing with all that washing, contrast with Elizabeth out for a walk in the beautiful countryside watching Darcy and Bingley galloping their horses!

Oh the music made me feel all nostalgic. I would have watched the series about 50 times. My daughter and I would get out our cross stitch out and settle down for 4 hours and watch the best show ever.

If you want to see how great an actress is Allison Steadman (Mrs Bennett), see "Life is Sweet", a Mike Leigh film from c. 1990s. She won lots of awards for it, well deserved.
