In honor of Baltimore's Star Spangled Sailabration and the War of 1812, SOBO Productions is posting our documentary that tells the story of the Pride of Baltimore, Baltimore and Maryland's beloved Baltimore Clipper. Baltimore Clippers were an important part of our young nations fight in the war of independence. This documentary tells the story of the history of Baltimore Clippers, the building of The Pride, the tragic loss at sea, and the city that rebuilt it's pride through the Pride of Baltimore II.
The documentary originally produced in 1993, is narrated by James Earl Jones and features interviews with Melborne Smith, Tom Gillmer, William Donald Schaefer, Peter Boudreau, Jan Miles, Scott Jeffery, Chris Hartman and many others. Carol Nethen did a masterful job of scoring the documentary with original music. For more information about SOBO Productions please visit soboproductions...

Beautifully done! Really hits home, I sailed on the "Pride of Baltimore" under Captain Melbourne Smith and Captain Peter Boudreau. (among others). What a wonderful ship to sail!

As a retired, licensed mariner who went to sea under sail and steam, the original Baltimore clippers were manifestly unsafe due their design features and many were lost as a result. ln the early 19th century, that was a surprise to no one. The loss of the original "Pride" in 1986 can be attributed mostly to its faithful recreation of the original design. The new(er) vessel properly incorporates features which provide for a far greater margin of safety, most notably better stability and watertight bulkheads. The builders of the original vessel failed to foresee the likelihood of the catastrophic accident that occurred, when it was, or should have been readily apparent to any properly trained mariner from the outset. A modern, deep keeled sailboat will almost always recover from a horizontal knockdown. The 19th century designs, while undeniably beautiful, were too dangerous for the safety requirements of 20th and 21st century, where far more value is placed on individual human lives, as is entirely appropriate. "The word 'experienced' often refers to someone who's gotten away with doing the wrong thing more frequently than you have." Laurence Gonzales"

@21:53 ~ This part kind of seems wrong. Sending a ship that caused England to lose the war against the United States, which ended up becoming the most powerful country in the world. It’s gonna like losing a lottery ticket and then having the person who found the lottery ticket come and shake your hand to thank you. Doesn’t seem like it would feel that great. Lol. Or it also reminds me of my grandmother who raised chickens and goats. She would feed the chicken all of our scraps except for when we ate fried chicken ourselves. She said it was wrong to feed dead chickens (like from KFC) to her chickens. That would make it cannibalism. This example comes to my mind when “the pride of Baltimore“ goes to England to rub it in the face of the queen. Lol
