Father Con Cronin, 72 years, was fatally killed in a road accident in Monkstown, Cork, Ireland. The incident happened on the 3rd of August in which the priest and the bus Eireann (Bus Ireland) driver Mr. Mark Wills (51 years) were both killed when the bus driver lost control of the vehicle. The priest was the curate in Passage West and Monkstown Harbour Parishes Co. Cork. It is believed that the driver may have suffered a "medical trauma" (a heart attack) in the seconds before the collision, that caused him to lose control of the bus and knocked several other cars parked by the road and killed Fr. Con. According to reports, the priest was leaving where he went to have lunch in Monkstown with the parish secretary, Ms. Cathy Concannon. Seeing the bus hurtling towards their direction, father Con pushed the secretary out of the bus way to save her life and he was struck by the bus and pronounced dead at the scene. Among the people who paid tribute to the bravery of the late priest, is the Catholic archbishop of Dublin Dermot Farrell who he said had "sacrificed himself to save his secretary". Fr. Con was ordained in 1979 and spent 25 years in Nigeria where he was carrying out his missionary work before returning to Ireland in 2004. May their souls rest in peace.
