The rubber room was not closed or inaccessible for years. There is both electrical and other reasons it needed to be opened from time to time for access related to pad maintenance. It was considered a confined space area and was kept locked up and had to be checked for appropriate O2 levels before entry. Once opened, it was not unusual to invite newer employees, with Pad Safety's blessing, to go see the room but then after whatever work was complete, Pad Safety would close the area back up. Ex Pad Elec Engineer.

@@chimeraproject9481 Given the history of rocket accidents, there doesn't seem to be enough warning of an explosion for this to ever have been realistic. When they go boom, they go boom quick. The scale of the Apollo mission was so insane. They built a one of a kind bunker that by itself would be a major project, for just a small chance of saving a few people in the unlikely scenario of an explosion where they have enough time to slide down a chute, but not enough to just drive away.

Totally. You should keep in mind this was the era of peak greatness for the USA, when the coffers were full. It allowed a great many fantastic projects to be funded; by fantastic I mean astounding and incredible, but also not entirely founded in reality. I seriously doubt anyone would have survived in there if the rocket exploded overhead. I'm guessing that the bureaucrats were just trying to keep their assess covered in case of an accident, so rubber bunker it was.

It also acts as a bit of safety theater for the public, so they knew that NASA spared no expense and was doing something incredible. Like, come on. A water slide? There's a reason we have footage of people going down that slide to the rubber room. It's a piece of the marketing as much as a safety feature.

This was used for the shuttle program, and all shuttle crew were trained how to use it, as well as the cable car escape system located on the backside of the same level as the Orbiter Access Arm. We never referred to it as the bunker, however. It was called the round room. There was no slide between the Mobile Launch Platform and the hatched opening on the deck for the Orbiter program. One would have to run to it, open the hatch and jump in, the last in shutting and latching the door behind. During conversion of the pads (LC39A & B) from Saturns to Orbiters, the whole escape system was accessible to anyone who could get on the pad and knew about it. It was a long walk/jog down that tunnel, but it was well lit with caged bulbs in the ceiling about every 50’. I was an engineer on LC39B (B pad) during its final phase of refit, working with Sauer, the prime; then the TTV phase, working with BSI, the prime; then went over to LSOC (after the turnover ceremony that was heavily influenced by wild pigs). Our first launch was Challenger. The top of the slide had a hinged and latched hatch then. It may have been decided as part of the Challenger investigation to later weld a plate over it and rely solely on the cable slides. The Challenger crew did practice opening the hatch and sliding down into the rubber room, with several practicing closing the hatch behind. They also practiced sliding the cars down the cables to get an idea of how they worked and how the drag chains slowed them down at the bottom, getting out of the cars, and running to the end of the tunnel, then running up inside the tunnel to the round room and strapping in. None of it seemed very practical, but it was one of many contingency plans. During a launch, nobody but the flight crew was within three miles of the pad. Launch control had to mitigate problems remotely, shutting fuel valves, disconnecting electrical circuts, moving arms and umbilical units, etc. The crew was on their own, and not every abort scenario involved an unforeseen explosion, so NASA did what it could to provide the crew with exit strategies. When compared to the Orbiter's barber pole escape plan, this one seems pretty reasonable.

It would depend on the situation. If it was a fuel leak or a structural failure prior to ignition, or an electrical fire, they’d have time to get into “scape suits,” get down off the tower, and bail down the slide. These activities are all rehearsed by the astronauts and the fueling crews.

This wasn't used for the Shuttle program. The tube opening on the pad surface had a plate welded over it. The only access was through the ECS duct out at the pad perimeter. Only the slidewire and its associated bunker were used for Shuttle.

That room, as well as many other safety features NASA had, where basically just placebos. At some point, a politician or journalist would ask "And what would happen if", and NASA couldn't say "then they're screwed", specially not after the Apollo 1 fire, so they would point to this ridiculous systems. The same goes for some of the abort modes on Shuttle, for example. It's just politics, there is absolutely no realistic scenario in which this could ever save anyone. You could clearly see this kind of thing at work a few days ago when the submersible titan disappeared. Everyone that knows absolutely anything about physics or engineering, or anyone with a bit of common sense and general knowledge, knew that they where all dead. What are the odds that the submersible would lose communications and navigation at the same time, all while also being somehow trapped in some debris that prevented them from blowing the ballast and heading to the surface? Zero. And yet, the media spent days talking about their oxygen supply, while everyone mounted a big pantomime of a rescue operation.

@@ronaldtreitner1460 A 60m long slide that is lubricated by a water sprinkler is going to need a lot more than some thick padding. They pretty clearly had at least some padding yet someone broke bones. Would probably make more sense to have a drain for the water combined with a slight upwards slope beyond the drain so that the water would pool in the right spot. They probably just didn't do it because a drain would be another path for a shockwave to ingress into the facility. Although they could have potentially had the drain connected to a sealed tank.

NASA could probably recreate the bunker at KSC’s visitor complex and recreate the slide as well (or make a smaller one). Fascinating to see Tom Stafford and Eugene Cernan during what was obviously a practice session down in the hole. When we did the Pad 39 tour in 2013 (we were able to get into the flame pit because the pad was being refurbed for Space-X or the competitor), the "survival room" was mentioned. The KSC guide mentioned the expectation that the pad might take two weeks (14 days) to cool down after a fully-fuelled Saturn-V blew up on the pad. We also have the evidence of what DID happen in the Soviet Union at Baikonur Cosmodrome, when one of their N-1 competitors to the Saturn-V did actually blow up on the pad.

@@SqualingtonConstantine Except rocket explosions aren't usually slow enough that you know something is gonna happen and have time to get all the way down to the pad to hit the slide. So, while they may have made it with those things in mind as a LAST RESORT.... there are still myriad other problems that can go wrong on a launch pad besides outright explosions. By it's nature, because it can handle the supposed worst explosion that would have been thrown at it, that's just it's highest level of defense. It doesn't mean it isn't capable of being used if there's an electrical fire, component malfunction or otherwise. They don't say "wait, you can't use the bunker because this is just a fire and isn't likely to cause an explosion! That is ONLY for explosions!" Discussing how it can protect from an explosion is of far more dramatic value for an audience than explaining how they'd use the same apparatus to escape ...a massive oil leak, fire, or other less-substantive situation. That doesn't mean that explosions are it's ONLY purpose. That would be just silly, and as you said he's "fixated" on it. Most people who're fixated on one thing already aren't seeing the bigger picture. You can respond with your continuing sarcasm, or you could stop acting like a child. Up to you. Doesn't bother me at all, I'll respond to it just the same; but in the one situation you won't be shown for the fool you're being due to your willful ignorance... it'll just be a conversation.

Apollo 1 was actually the second Apollo 1 capsule. One was delivered and it was so poorly made NASA took just one look and sent it back with a lot of caustic remarks. God darn it. In "The Right Stuff" which I just read this year, the astronauts were all sent on PR tours, and at a factory the astronaut had run out of things to say. So he just said "Make it right." The factory crew erupted with cheers and it became a motto, huge banners, posters, etc. Sometimes a few words at the right moment changes everything. At the Battle of Trafalgar, just before the English and French fleets began their fight, Admiral Nelson sent the words "England expects every man to do his duty." The sailors came alive with fierce dedication.

Thank you for sharing this information. It's hard to believe that the early space programs of Gemini and Apollo took place more than 60 years ago and we are still learning new and interesting facts about the design and engineering implemented to complete their goals. I can't imagine the myriad of problems that had to be solved in only a handful of years. I believe a lot of the programs success is due to having outstanding leadership at all phases and genius engineers. I watched a recent video about the engineering of the first stage of an Apollo rocket explained by a NASA engineer that worked on both Gemini and Apollo. He gave very detailed explanations on the systems, how they were designed, the problems that had to be solved, as well as how each problem was tackled from an engineering perspective. The creativity and variety of bold ideas these folks came up with is truly staggering.

@AHHHHHHHH21 well if it was a public museum it would need to be accessible to those in wheelchairs due to the Americans with Disabilities Act. Therefore they'd probably make an elevator that goes straight to the room with the slide by digging down straight from immediately above ground

Would they really have been able to detect an imminent explosion with enough time for the entire crew to get to the bunker? I would think if there was going to be catastrophic failure, it would happen without warning.

Starting with Artemis II, if an emergency occurs that necessitates an evacuation of the pad, everyone would use the slide wire baskets on the west side of the spacecraft and then either wait in a bunker or climb aboard armored personal carriers and crash the perimeter fence to get to safety.

a natural evaporating holding tank would do fine, the rarity of having to use this could make it a decently cheap and efficient option, at the end and bottom there could be a bunch of tiny holes to allow it to drain into the evaporation pit

Anyone who worked mission S & R know if this was classified at the time? As for now sadly, like most underground facilities, if it's not maintained it's usually been breached by toxic mold. If it hasn't and if it's safe, it can be turned into a tour area with other attractions on it's own with minimal funding.
