I canceled two orders from p1 yesterday. This is the last straw for p1. They screwed over the og collectors. And this is going to backfire on the company. The es was originally 850 for the dx. Collectors had 3 YEARS to pre order before that lowered the es to 250. Then collectors got it and loved it. Then casual collectors were mad that it was an ES. This isn't how this hobby works. And no one should be buying this recast. Which is what it is.

Prime 1 and other companies need to be careful with this. I think even for collectors who plan on keeping a piece for life, resale value is something that's taken into consideration when considering value. Like a house you might plan on living in it your whole life, but you buy it knowing that it should retain its value so that you can pass that equity on eventually. If these companies make any moves that could diminish that perceived value it might make all collectors weary of current pricing of pieces as is, until there's much more transparency, just like you said.

I don't understand why prime 1 doesn't cover return shipping for broken statues. Sideshow does. I know it costs more to ship overseas but that should be the company's problem, that's the risk of being in business for this hobby and the company should have a budget for it. It makes 0 sense to make a customer have to pay for a broken statue

Nothing new, remember the Sideshow Poison Ivy Green Envy or 2nd edition Bowen Grendel statues? The difference now is that statues average almost $2k now. These re-issues, new colors or scale, destroy collectiblity and integrity of the company. Everyone will be thinking twice before they open their wallets. If its not limited then they should be more affordable.

Part of the price gouge these companies attempt to justify is with edition sizes. If theyre gunna be shady like this, they better lower the price.

I've seen something similar with the DC Comics art print market. Way back, DC Comics released limited (some very) giclées of Alex Ross, Jim Lee, etc. art through the WB stores. Since that time, some of those editions that were reselling at high prices on the secondary market were reprinted in a larger version (dimensions) for a targeted market like Europe or made into a special proof. In other cases, some were reprinted as lithographs and sold through Sideshow. Imagine how annoying it is to have a limited piece of art that you purchased at thousands of dollars only to watch it get reprinted years later and watch the market value tank? Thankfully, I've managed to avoid those devaluation issues, but I do feel for the people whom it affected.

I think you're confusing collector one and collector two. Everyone buys a statue to keep, if you don't then you're a flipper. I would think every collector buys a piece because they love it, think it's a work of art and fits in their collection. However, life happens. Maybe a new statue comes out of the same character that you think is better than the one you have and you want to "upgrade". Possibly a grail has become available to you and selling a few statues will get you what you want. That's okay. As far as Prime 1 goes they showed poor business practices in regards to the breakages of the first BIG CHAP. They should have taken care of their customers. I agree they should be up front up doing variants down the road. Maybe collectors could use their collective voice to show this displeasure or to ask Prime 1 to be more transparent.
@VulcanEditing2 жыл бұрын
I thought it was identical, learning bout them changing it a bit and the fact that the original had so many issues with it, I think this is OKAY. However i do NOT want this to be a standard. To keep it simple, idc what type of a collector a person is, if a studio puts an edition size to a product, then re-releases it identically or even really close for no decent reason, then that's them going back on their own word and taking money out of the collectors pockets that have that product, and putting it in their own. Obviously I stand by the fact that the best thing they could've done was to fix the issues with the original piece itself.
@Johnny-dz6vl2 жыл бұрын
You have made a very good point. This could go sideways for both Prime one and the collecting community, it then raises the issue "limited to say 1000pcs world wide" then do these numbers really exist? As for the collecting community, they ARE being used. Not a good look regardless 😕
@borgcube1of2922 жыл бұрын
First just like to say thanks for another great video and topic. I'm a buy it and hold it state of mind currently. Even so, time and situation means I want the value to hold. I've seen this practice of slight change to other forms of art means it's now considered a unique piece. By definition this is true, but I think it's unfair practice that can water down the value for existing owners. We see this from Hot Toys, Iron Studios, & some others...however some big differences. 1st the pricing is much lower, & 2nd they're not waiving around an ES with the get it now or never see it again. In my opinion re-issue with very little changes especially no change to the focal point with the price tag of these larger statues should be a big no no. You want to re-do the same character fine, change the pose and some of the paint (where possible) or change the scale of the piece or have the foresight to set higher ES or open ended ES to begin with. This case is compounded by the break issues with what I'd say is a forced poor option of resolution (small credit). If I had a broken first run piece, I'd say definitely make me whole again with replacement (plan for that as part of the new run). This could blow up in their face a bit because it might cause some hesitancy on future sales...can you be trusted when you issue an ES? What other corners will you cut to increase profits? Integrity is hard to get, but very easy to lose if not careful. If you read this far, thanks for reading my very long hot air filled comment. Last word, hope those that do have the first run of this are made whole & happy by the time the dust settles.

it comes to a very simple word be kind you got to be kind to your customers because I collect sixth scale figures as well as some statues and we all don't want when we get them in the mail and open a box that nothing is scratched or broken but sometimes not all the time those things happen and when you call them and they give you the information of what they could do you will like for them to solve the problem especially the amount of money that you are putting especially when it comes to statues now it's not an entitlement but I feel that if your customers are spending the amount of money on your statues and something happen accidentally you would do your best to try and solve the problem you don't want the refund them but you will like to fix the problem so that they can have a collectors item that works for them to not want to give you the part simply because in their mind s*** happens but they're going to have the nerve to reissue a piece and still don't want to help you out respect your customers not doing much gives a bad look it's like telling the person we could care less about your problem it doesn't matter if that collector doesn't buy a lot of statues maybe one or two a year or even if a person buys 10 in a year at the end of the day you've got to be kind to your collectors be kind to your customers cuz when you do they collect more because they like the business that you are doing and prime one with their reputation they should have a great customer service with their collectors so simply put #bekind

I think once a company states what an ES is going to be they should stick to it. Coming back later and re-releasing a statue is bad business practice, because it does alter the value of the original release of statues that were purchased by collectors. If they go back and make significant changes to the new release than that is fair game. But I tell you what, I came into this hobby late, and started off small so there are statues that I completely missed and statues that at the time were out of my budget or what I was comfortable to spend, that I would love for them to re-release. i.e. The Batman Who Laughs and Hush Superman.
@IrcnStark2 жыл бұрын
I don't pay attention to edition sizes when I order, I buy if I like the statue. That said, I definitely wouldn't want to be losing money on a piece because a statue was reissued. I started collecting Hot Toys right before the pandemic and all of the Iron Man figures I wanted were aftermarket and going for ridiculous amounts of money. I paid it because I wanted those pieces on my shelf. Cut to - Hot Toys is probably going down the track of re-releasing all of those same figures I paid almost double for. I'm a little salty about that. It killed the value of those figures, but on the other hand I'm glad to have them on my shelf. Statues are another price tier entirely though and I think I'd be much saltier if a statue company started reissuing everything.

I'm angry about what they've done. I ordered the original based on it being limited edition with a set es. I also got it as it was the only version they were doing. Had they announced the new version at the same time as the original I'd have ordered the new version. Smaller base (didn't care for the wall) and 1 box not 2 so shipping would have been waaaaay cheaper (I'd probably have saved $400 on shipping) plus the new one is cheaper as standard. This whole thing is a disgrace. They've lost my custom and I was going to order the warrior, Ripley and had the 1/3 predator on order. Would probably have caved got one bust for it too. And that's just the starters. That lost world statue looks promising... Done with them. Oh and for the record I don't ever plan on buying to sell, I'm a collector (well I was, probably about time to sell up :/)

Even if you are buying it to keep, that doesn't mean you would want something that is mass produced. Exclusivity means something beyond monetary value. The Big chap itself is the selling point. It would have been acceptable if it were a different scale or color variant, but to rerelease the same statue is a complete slap in the face to collectors (especially with what happened with us having to settle for damaged pieces). With that said, I hold no animosity to collectors excited to pick up the new version. Good for them.
@lteelana2 жыл бұрын
If you're salty, you have your reasons and that is fine. I personally have no problems with reissues. It gives collectors a chance to get something they might have missed out on for whatever reason. Plus, aftermarket prices have gotten ridiculous with shipping, etc. Exclusivity is nice, but something just as good or better is often coming down the pipeline. Advances in the technology that goes into engineering these statues; new designs, better paint application, character likenesses etc. This limited edition Big Chap is different from the OG, and will likely (hopefully) be better engineered and not suffer from the issues the OG did. Also, if something's a cluster all around, better to start from scratch than to try and band-aid several things. As you said Chris, replacement parts are not always guaranteed to work.

This is definitely a problem for collectors that flip statues as a business or just to fund the hobby. Me personally I’m very particular about the statues I purchase. I buy statues of my favorite characters to display in my home and take into consideration mainly space and price. The Edition Sizes are never a part of my decision or what they could sell for down the line. Now would I love for statues that have been long sold out to rise again with an expansion to the edition size… yes. I personally don’t see a problem with it but I can 100% understand any outrage when I company may do this.

Life does happen and if your spend $1,500 and it drops to $300 in two years in* value, It would really hurt collectors who invest in these statues and make it so some couldn't collect. Anything over $1,000 reissue is a bit of a slap unless it's a drastic change and almost a different staue.

even if they did this years down the line, it wouldn't be right, but doing this just 3 months of having received it is pretty brutal I find. At that point, the ES won't really mean anything if at any moment they can come back and do this over and over.

If they didnt plan on a re release then fine but now they are then yes seen out replacement parts. But like in comics, first prints vs second prints. The first is always more desirable. But second prints lets everyone share in the hobby. I see no difference in the statues collecting.
@arcaderunner21882 жыл бұрын
Statues aren’t comics. First prints may be inferior, collectors want better paint jobs and better engineering, second print runs may have those, and with fragility and QC problems, that’s valuable. No-one cares for first vs second print if it’s the same statue, they just want the statue.

Edition size or resale value doesn't bother me in the slightest, I buy to keep, after all, It's called a collection! This 'shady' tactic only really affects the 'flipping' style collector who isn't really a collector at all, these types are only in the game to turn a profit, and are more akin to dealers. However, collectors will still seek the first edition pieces over second and third editions, as collectors do with comics, books, albums, art etc. The original run will always be more desirable than subsequent reissues, unless the later editions include bonus extras not previously available. In which case, some 'completist' collectors may want both!

Say, a 1/3 statue gets a 1/4 re-release or 1/4 gets offered at 1/6. Studio gets more money, more people get the opportunity to get their hands on a great statue, and original buyers still get the prestige of owning the original, full size statue.

I definitely understand why someone would be upset with this. If you are constantly switching your statues out and selling them to buy more this is definitely a slap in the face. But I for one view them as art pieces of characters that I love and only intend to keep. I feel it limits my purchases witch is a good thing. I also think better communication will benefit everyone involved. Your point about the Batman who laughs is well put. But I think it would be different enough not to upset people. Also think it would not be as good. What would upset people is if P1 re-released their 1/3 lines but in quarter scale with no loss of quality. That would upset me because I would have gotten the quarter scale because I could fit more statues in the space that I have.

Money grab. No matter what industry your company is in, if you piss off your clients, they will stop being your clients, and they will turn their attention and their wallets to one of your competitors.

I can see two sides to this conversation. If Mark 1 had issues, maybe P1 wanted to improve the quality product they provide. At the same time, they should be transparent about it. When a company makes me question their integrity, it makes me second guess if I want to do business with them. What other shady business practices could they be doing behind the scenes that customers aren't aware of? Interested to hear people's thoughts on the other company and the 1/4 scale Joker news that's recently been revealed.

I understand why some collectors will be upset. However, I've never purchased anything I collect - statues, original 2D art, CGCs as an investment - I have a 401k, IRA, and property for that. I collect b/c I enjoy it and exclusivity is not part of that for me, but I realize others care very much about owning 1 of X edition size. Someone else owning a second edition of something has no impact on my enjoyment. I may be wrong, but I am not aware of any studio / company promising edition exclusivity.

I don't agree with Chris on re-releases mainly because all the people usually piss off on re-release are the statue flipper who just want to flip the statue in aftermarket as soon as the statue is in high demand. It is disgusting to watch someone who bought a MSRP $2,400 statue and immediately flip it for $6000 to $7000 in aftermarket. If you really a statue collector, it doesn't really matter because of the time you can just sell it for what you bought it for and they do sell if that is the price. I think most people who buy these statue just want to appreciate the art.

Yeah. Check this out. I am an "arcane" author. We get paid squat. however, collectors get paid well. My books sold from the publisher at $166.00. Collectors bought them up. Deluxe leather editions and hardcovers alike. Then... they slapped them in the face by releasing the stuff on Amazon. Everything collectors bought from that company is now worth "less" than the original price because of their bad business move. The company is responsible for holding to their word. What they will say is that "limited edition" means they do not indefinitely produce it. It does not mean they will not produce it again though. It means there will always be limited production. They (the products) won't be like silverware for instance, where they will always produce more. That is company "logic".
@KurtisJoseph2 жыл бұрын
On the after market limited edition books sell for thousands for sure. Then Amazon crushes that. The entire point of collecting for some is about creating assets. So you spend an initial 170 bucks on the book knowing that its value will go up. Then they turn around and print it in an unlimited Amazon edition. Similar as this. The small "differences" are like... okay the cover is cheap with cover art created by some high dude getting paid through CGTrader. It is not leather. The stuff between the covers is the same. The base is different. So? Lol! The statue is the same. It is not a modification it is a cash grab.

Imo idc which type of collector you are lol if whatever company reissued a statue you want and you didn't get on the 1st round your buying it for sure. So a bunch of liars lmao I would tell the people that are mad, don't buy from prime 1 and see how many actually stick to the word or are just talking junk
@holmesjakekiller2 жыл бұрын
Not really, it’s not a exact reissue. Now if the added another 1000 of the old piece I would be mad.
@Bransonization2 жыл бұрын
Nobody makes this big a deal when sideshow or prime 1 does the exact same statue as a variant but just alter the color. This one actually has a newly designed bottom base (not just the exclusion of the wall attachment ) I think there will still be plenty of value in the original because if you prefer that base/wall than you will pay for it, as well as the incredibly low ES.
@silvarknite72 жыл бұрын
I tend to be more of a buy to keep kind of collector. Generally I like reissues if it means I can get something new in box at an affordable price. But now that you explain it I can see how that could upset certain people. The breakage is upsetting though.

I'm happy about this. I made a big chap video a week ahead before this news was released. I was talking about how i missed out on the action pose. what timing. this is excellent news to me. The Original release has the back wall. Will retain value. stands out. looks better. what they should have done is release the same statue looking the opposite direction in a limited run if they were gonna go this route. or just some new big chap statue all together. Big chap Ultimate....lol. And send a reasonable discount to the other collectors who had problems. like 75% off and an apology. getting the replacement parts doesn't seem ideal..they wont fit properly. each statue is hand custom made and each one is barely notiicably different.

After collecting for about 2.5 years now, it seems like in the end-it’s all about the Benjamins… Somewhat shady practices seem to be expected, but what I DON’T LIKE the idea of-is painfully making payments to payoff a $2K statue to find ANY breakages! A company should know how to pack their merch in a way that this shouldn’t be a problem 99.9% of the time! TBH, I’m not sure if I’d feel comfortable purchasing directly from Prime 1… Their rep seems to go like this, “I love my Prime 1 Batman, buuuuut THIS happened…”
@Adam_Le-Roi_Davis.2 жыл бұрын
I think that if a company has plans to make other very similar versions of something that are limited editions in the future then they should be up front and honest about that, particularly if there are issues with the current limited edition, common breakages etc, this would give you the option of getting a refund and waiting to get a future version of what you want. If you are left thinking that this is the only one that a company will be producing then you're forced to choose between the lesser of two evils, accept the refund and go without something that you really desire or to try to fix a broken one to best of your ability, if you go for latter the pieces intrinsic value is greatly effected and any possibility of resale too.
@thenamek13512 жыл бұрын
I think it is crappy to collectors. What if they released them as first edition and second edition. So collectors knew if there’s was on the initial run or a reprint of a statue. I would think a first run would be more valuable. I think the companies are trying to make a sale on something for them might be easier to reproduce and they know there is a demand for it.

Variants for me are fine, a different paint job in combination with either a slightly tweaked base and/or different switch outs / not including an exclusive switch out makes it different enough for me and is a nice way to allow others who missed out to share some joy! However, if a company straight up re-released a piece without any changes to the original release whatsoever - i.e. thereby simply extending the edition size, that's where i'd have a massive problem - it would be enough to deter me from ordering with them ever again. I do though think scale variants need to be released at the same time as the original release, because changing the scale later down the line for a re-release can be really controversial as different scales give different costings, and anything that impacts cost or resale value (e.g. when only the scale is changed, but sculpt and paint etc is identical it might devalue the original) is not typically welcomed by collectors in a premium collectibles hobby (especially with the vastly inflated pricing we're all subject to these days).

For me I think this is a great idea, that they will re release it. Fist I dont believe any piece looses value especially since they are not the same and also because collector pieces will not loose value, at lease not all of it. Anyone pissed is just because they wanna bank on reselling and probably just dont care about the collecting idea in the first place. I did not get a chance to buy the original statue since I was late into the "collecting" scene per say but now I have a chance. I'd say there are collectors and scalpers.

I own the OG DX and this reissue was disappointing at first but I kinda do want to pick up the museum art version. It’s basically a whole different statue now that the base is changed. Best of both worlds in my case 😁

Im not entirely against this if the statue packaging and engineering is redesigned, both which led to all the breakages. they need to take care of the customers who had issues with the original release first.

Fair game. The majority of the complainers are people that are selling aftermarket. Its no different than XM and tweeter head rescaling or sideshow releasing variants or having huge edition sizes. Im all for companies making money off their OWN products. The community created this issue selling these items for crazy amounts aftermarket and not thinking that company owners don't have a presence in the community. If XM came out with ghost rider on bike or Storm I'd buy one in a second cause I'm not paying 4x the retail to some guy who claims thats market value.

well got to say mite be same name but the pose is a little different in the new one tail comes to opposite side and not as curled as the old one ,so I can see them getting away with new versions

Well, I collect statues to keep with no plans on reselling them. I think that if Prime 1 Studios is coming out with another Limited Edition Big Chap that it would be fine as long as it was an entirely different and better pose and base. But it looks like all they did is remove the wall which is kinda lame. It should probably be a more dynamic pose instead of a museum pose with the alien eggs and acid spills on the base with , as I seen on another Alien statue someone had, a light-up base that can either light-up green or blue; that piece looked incredible!

In the current statue collection market, rarity doesn't seem to have any meaning anymore. Authorized manufacturers with licenses are printing so many quantities that the value of numbering is meaningless. Personally, I don't feel bad or good about these reproductions for that reason. The last big chap had a very nice format, but I didn't like the huge diorama-type base covering the back plate, so I passed it. However, I personally like it because it comes back as a traditional, formal trophy-type base.

As a business owner which I am if I can sell a product and make a boatload of money off of it why wouldn’t I. On the other hand as a collector I could see where people are upset I can see both sides.
