I agree, I lived in Russia for a while (cause my wife is from there) and the housing situation there is totally different to the UK, in the Soviet times they built 10s of millions of commie blocks, every citizen got a free apartment. Since then, they're still building millions of new houses every year, meanwhile the population in russia is rapidly declining. Like who are all of these new houses even for? They are rapidly developing similar to China, like in 5 years they've built 100s of new cities and millions of apartment blocks. Also the housing prices in russia keep going up, skyrocketing ... It just doesn't make sense tbh. They have way more houses than people, but housing is still almost unaffordable. So yeah building new houses absolutely doesn't make prices go down. Not even with rapid population decline

I'm not against building new home the problem I have is the surrounding infrastructures! Already the traffic is terrible everywhere and road conditions are poor, the doctors are always full and impossible to get an appointment, the hospitals have a 10 hour waiting time to see a doctor, not enough teachers and schools to provide education and the prices of utilities if they can even keep up with such demand! That's why people are saying a firm NO to new housing need to get things working again along side it

we did that in the 60s and 70s and created vast wastelands of crime-filled housing. if we do build 'up' then we have to build in policing and extremely strong governance - not residents associations. RA's let knife crime grow whilst complaining about where bins are placed.

Planning isn't the issue, it's right to buy and other policies meant to drive councils out of housing and under. Developers have no incentive to solve the problem because they know that by trickling the supply they can keep prices up while limiting risks and so maximise their business. Really there are only two solutions. Either repeal right to buy and change the funding model so councils can create competition in the housing space, or intervene to break up the developer cartels and make holding on to develop-able land impractical or both.
