As any human he had some positive and negative sides. Ojectively speaking he benefited eritrea than ethiopia. Here are the reasons; 》Despite the great pressure and opposition from the amharic people and amharic intellectuals, he as a trasitional government leader of ethiopia, he signed and recognized the independence of eritrea from ethiopia. Hade he not signed, eritrea's independence would have took a long time and cost additional human lives and material resources. 》as some sources point out, he was the one who objected about the possibility of Assab port of eritrea to be as part of ethiopia. This was the time when the american foreign affairs for africa belived to be one of the right hand of the weyane regime raised as a better option. 》During the ethio-eritrea war between 1998-2000, about 1/3 eritrean territory was occupied by ethiopia. How ever, immediately the eritrean regime saw that its existence under question and accepted all the precondition demands asked by the ethiopian weyane regime including the retreat of eritrean troops 25km from all ethio-eritrea borders deep to the eritrean territories. Before ethiopia penetrated all the front lines, the eritrean regime refused to accept the weyane regime's precondition enquiry to retreat 25 kms from the border back to eritrean territory. After ethiopia broke all the front lines and conqured about 1/3 eritrean territory, the dictator regime of eritrea accepted the ethiopian regime's demands. As soon as the eritrean regime accepted the ethiopian regime's demand, the ethiopian regime under Melese leadership ordered all ethiopian troops to leave all eritrean occupied territories. This situation opened the door a means of survival for the eritrean regime. Except Melese and a few of the weyane regime authorities sided with him, almost all of the ethiopian people except the tigray people and some of the weyane regime authorities who didn't side with the Meles oligarcky were interested to finish of the eritrean regime. * The only thing that's always mentioned by the eritrean dictatorial regime and its fans and followers always mentioned as a negative part of Melese against eritrean people is that because he betrayed eritrea by refusing to give back its territory called Badme and the expulsion of about 70,000 eritreans from ethiopia during that so called ethio-eritrea border dispute. How ever, from his later confesdion, that act of expulsion wasn't intentional action but done out of mere fear. And the reason sounds true. If it was out of mere hate of eritrean people, why after the war stopped about 4 times of the size of the expelled eritrean people came to ethiopia and live in refugee camps and many live in all parts of ethiopia and thousands got free university education and graduated in all types of field studies?

Unfortunately, TPLF sabotaged the peace agreements & the border demarcation because the territories TPLF claimed to be part of Tigray happened to be Eritrean territories according to the EEBC border decisions. Therefore, TPLF must withdraw from Eritrean territories for the peace agreements to be honored & implimented. Anything else is gambling with the peoples blood. .

Okay,it is really wonderful to know Eritrea is an independent country. And I have no problem with the independence. But what happen to human rights,freedom of speech(expression),democracy,and Justice? How come there is no a national constitution implemented to this day in 23 years?
