Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and left the country, as reported on Monday. This development comes amid some of the worst violence the South Asian nation has experienced in over five decades. In a press conference, Bangladesh Army Chief Wakar uz Zaman announced that the Army would take charge of future matters and initiate talks with political parties to form an interim government following Hasina's resignation.
"There is a crisis in the country. I have met with Opposition leaders and we have decided to form an interim government to run this country. I take all responsibility and promise to protect your life and property. Your demands will be fulfilled. Please support us and stop the violence. If you work with us, we can move towards a proper solution. We cannot achieve anything through violence," he stated.
According to sources, Hasina and her sister have left the Prime Minister's official residence for a safer location. Hasina had intended to record a speech but was unable to do so.
Wakar uz Zaman, dressed in military fatigues, stated on national television that he would form an interim government after the prime minister's resignation and departure from the capital due to massive protests. "I am taking full responsibility," he declared, emphasizing the need to stop the violence that has caused significant harm to the country's economy and led to numerous deaths. He expressed hope that the situation would improve following his speech.
Wakar mentioned that he would discuss forming the interim government with the president and had already spoken with the main opposition parties and civil society members, though not with Hasina's Awami League. Wakar, a career infantry officer with nearly four decades of military experience, has served two tours as a UN peacekeeper and worked in the prime minister's office.
