What an incredible set up - awesome to see. It is really nice to see how natural the environments are for fish too and although most people would consider the stocking to be minimal (compared to 99% of tank set up out there) I would call it realistic and way more natural than the vast majority of fish set ups on KZbin which can end up looking like aquatic concentration camps. The crazy stocking employed by most people does invariably require a much more beefy (and less 'natural') filtration set up so I always love to see videos put out where people set their tanks up more naturally with a real understanding on creating a sustainable aquatic ENVIRONMENT which mirrors nature. Groovy.

Hey Richard! I agree, there was such a different feel to his tanks - the fish were more relaxed and just seemed happier.
@pondguru

@@PrimeTimeAquatics Yes for sure the environment plays a huge part in fish happiness and health which is why I always appreciate seeing someone who has clearly done research into the natural environments of the fish being kept. Far too many people simply bang a tank full of incompatible fish with different water requirements and expect them to be compatible and that invariably leads to conflict and poor health. I equate the tank set ups here are the equivalent of a person who enjoys living in the country with clean air, being free to do what they want as opposed to being forced to live in a city full of foul air and people all over the place. If that was me in that situation it wouldn't be long before I went postal, lol
@HalfManHalfCichlid

excellent video and it raises some provocative questions. As a biologist, my observation is that Lucas' tanks have a ratio of at least 50:1 plant to fish biomass. This is why his system works. The typical african cichlid aquarium for example there is zero plant biomass, hence the need for canister filters, sumps, etc. Hence the need for having large filtration capacity for the Beneficial Bacteria since the plants are missing totally or in part from the equation. The beauty of the video in my opinion is how going to these natural aquariums can enrich the hobby- the tanks are more tranquil, the fish more relaxed, and we are likely to be able to observe natural behaviors that would be missed otherwise. Great, really enjoyed it.

@danschafer8050
@danschafer8050 6 жыл бұрын
@@LRBaquatics do you water change that tank? I was thinking this exact same thing while watching. Some fish are not compatible in a low bio load or planted tank. Like African cichlids or similar behaving fish. Where overcrowding is required to maintain "peace" if you can call it that, and when the fish tear up any plants. Do you have any fish like this? Have never seen you keep any monster fish or other larger, aggressive fish? Much easier to do your strategy with the type of fish you keep or shrimp.
@macsarcule

Super agree. Simply saying “let Mother Nature do it’s thing” doesn’t really tell anyone how to do this. I’ve had filterless tanks, and this works, even going for months without water changes, but your local tap water condition and quality has a lot to do it, as does the fish bio load as you noted. In my experience, nothing could be more important to making a filterless tank work than keeping fish counts incredibly low. Much lower than most hobbyists want. Additionally, be willing to compromise on plants. Making this work is not about getting to have exactly the kind of plants you want - it’s matching the plants to your local water conditions. “What about if I have RO or other water treatment systems to alter my local water?” Cool. That’s very much like having a filter, just not in the tank. There’s so little we learned about his local tap water here, especially the ph and hardness, and it makes a huge difference.

@@PrimeTimeAquatics I had a heavily planted 10 gallon tank a few years ago with a single betta in it, it had a tiny h.o.b. filter running on a very low flow. It was beautiful! Then I put the betta in a 5 gallon tank and put a .25 cent feeder goldfish in that 10 gallon. He ate all the plants and destroyed the tank. Now the goldfish is huge living in a 20 gallon long with no plants. Lol I wish I had kept that 10 gallon tank planted and removed the filter, and never put a goldfish in it. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to start another tank and buy some plants! Lol

Chris again, thanks for showing me this video. That is a lot of what I do with my outdoor shrimp tanks. I have 4 - 50 gal drums that I breed shrimp and minnows in for feeders for my own fish in which saves me a great deal of cash since it requires very little maintenance. The sun light produces algae. The shrimp feed on the algae. I feed the shrimp to my Cichlids. I do have to keep Gambusia minnows in with them as well to prevent mosquito larva. I also breed crayfish in this same fashion. This also helps since I know where my feeders come from and allows me to watch for infections and diseases that could affect my fish. I use no filtration on it either however i do use air stones to help with oxygen levels to so i may keep higher numbers in each drum. However I use no substrate. Whatever leaves and sediment falls into the drums from the trees is all I use. The shrimp, fish, and snails nibble it up and the rest decays on the bottom to create a natural substrate. I never took the time to learn the science behind it. I just figure what works naturally should work at home as well. These days I am really trying to learn the science to take my hobby a step further and really grasp and understanding behind why it works. I am really enjoying your videos and look forward to seeing more.

A while back, when I still had only one aquarium, I had a filter abruptly stop working. I had to replace it with a different type of filter, so I couldn't use any part of the old filter (sponges, cartridges, media, etc). Initially I expected the worst, since I was adding a new, uncycled filter to a fully-stocked tank. However, my fish were just fine. There was no dramatic spike in Ammonia, Nitrites or Nitrates. That was an eye opener for me.

My goal is to have them all in split tanks, even my females. I currently keep 5 girls in my 30 tall guppy tank. Don't worry folks my girls are happy and healthy, they get along great. They where all kept together in a 5 gallon at the pet store. They ripped each other apart. Since I have had them. They have put on weight, their fins are almost healed. Yes there is some flares, but that is it. Just flares. They love being able to be the micro predator that they are.

It's really very simple: high plant densities, low fish densities, sensible water changes... and a healthy dose of LRB magic. Very educational and entertaining video! Pssssst - what fish did you hide in your tupperware container when he wasn't looking???

I think of my filters as a back up for the most part. All of my tanks would probably be fine without them but until I have more experience I prefer to have a safety net.

I think Lucas is breaking the Group Think phenomenon. He has dared to do things differently. One thing I have found in my short time keeping fish is that market trends tend to encourage hobbyists to require more than is actually required to keep fish healthy. Undoubtedly, some people do overstock, however, I believe that many individuals stock in such a way (from what I have seen on you-tube) that the filtration some quarters encourage as a requirement to keeping a healthy aquarium and inhabitants, is actually not necessary at all.

I have found the more I leave my tank alone the less issues I have. Now with that said my biggest tank is a 11 gallon tank, and what Lucas said makes sense.

Some people if not a lot have huge water filter filtration systems and tell me I need a canister. I have had a 90 gallon tank with two aquaclear 110’s and have never had any water issues. I have a discus tank. Would one filter be enough? I ask because the overflow does swoosh the fish around unless my h.o.b is set at a low flow.
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 4 жыл бұрын
Most likely it would. Water changes are the most important thing to keep the nitrates down with Discus in a fully cycled tank.
