Sphinx are created by a god to protect an artifact or important site for said god, they aren't always created by the same god. They will set up trials for mortals to see if they are worthy of that artifact or whatever they were guarding. Kami saved Scanlan because he passed the trial and therefore was worthy of the Vestige, which means that he would in all likelihood get the sword back. This is why he saved Scanlan, he had faith in Scanlan.

It's because the Sphinx didn't go out and fight an Ancient Black Dragon, if Umbrasyll here was an Adult Black Dragon then it'd be a very one sided fight. Ancient Black Dragons, are epic level monsters that have lived and fought for centuries. Even a Wyrmling (the youngest form) of Dragon is smarter, stronger and more durable then a human. And they can live for thousands of years, and some even live long enough to gain power comprable to the lesser gods of Dungeons and Dragons.

Ngtl this episode reminded me of a traumatic session me and my group had with our DM. He introduced a crystal dragon and in no small way, we basically fell in love with our new companion, we were sent to a Frost Jarls fortress to recover an artifact that was special to the people of Icewind Dale, an axe. He was imprisoned by the Jarl and we released him, he assisted in our escape but gave up his life in the process. (Damn jarl rolled a nat 20. 😒) Our DM described in great detail that after we plummeted to the ground and our dragon friend told us to run, that as we fled, the jarl jumped on top of him and slayed him. (Note: I use the word "slay" because the dragons end was far too graphic for KZbin) A sad tale but one I still remember. It was one of our greater DND sessions. Two amongst our party shed tears, out of three.

Technically, Androsphinxes (what Kam is, literally male-sphinx cos WotC reckoned the male ones should have a seperate stronger statblock) are immune to non-magical bps. So, per the typical ancient black dragon statblock, Umbrasyl would only be able to hit him with the bonus acid damage on his attacks (plus breath weapon), so Kam should have a pretty good shot at soloing.

I forgot they took away dragon's natural weapons being magic. Even still. Andro has an ac of 17 vs the dragons 22. The dragon is faster, meaning the sphinx may need to burn its legendary actions to keep up or move out of the way. It only has 199hp to the dragons 367. The dragon may not be able to damage with its claw attacks, but it can certainly grapple with them making it even easier to land bites and making hitting with its breath weapon easier. This also forces the Andro to burn its spell slots on freedom of movement to avoid that. And the dragons wing attack may even knock the Andro prone. DC 23 save against only a plus 6 bonus and no natural dex mod. And nothing the Andro has spell wise is going to be particularly effective. And its roars can either be saved against or just shrugged off with legendary resistance. Im not saying its impossible, but even with the boon of non magical immunity vs BPS, this isn't an easy fight in the slightest. It boils down to the two Flame strike's 8d6 on failed save damage and the Andro's 2d10 claw attacks vs the Dragons 2d8 acid per bite, only needs to roll a 2 to hit the Andro, and its 15d8 breath weapon. Which is another dex save of over 20.

It was a rather shallow analysis just because I was really rooting for Kam but he’d likely lose even with the action economy favouring him here; could make 3 damaging attacks per round (action+legendary) vs dragon’s 2. There’s just such a gap in their stats, with the dragon having an extra ~150hp and hitting on 2 vs sphinx hitting on 10, plus the dragon has proficiency in all strong saves plus charisma so magic would be ineffective. That’s not even considering the breath weapon being up roughly every 3 rounds.

This is obv a case where dragons are definitively a fully magical creature. For all of D&D history an ancient dragon would fare well against even a greater sphinx. That being said Kam doesn't bring out the higher level spells here.

I have a theory that, as servants of the goddess of knowledge, Sphinxes in this world can see the future, which is why they put VM through the trials they did. Osysa tested the crew to see for herself that they were worth revealing her mate's hiding place to help, and Kamaljiori tested them to prompt Scanlan to show him Osysa one last time and to make sure he was prepared to feel pain before Umbrasyl attacked.

Just watched this episode, abd TBH, I think it's possible Grog could've finished off Umbrasyl right then and there. Yeah, Umbrasyl was knocking Grog around a bit, but Grog was actually drawing blood, and Craven Edge was actively absorbing more blood and feeding Grog's bloodlust more as the fight went on.

The fact that Umbrasyl decapitated poor Kami and set him up as a trophy is just what I expect a black dragon to do. Black dragons are known for loving decay, dead civilizations and ruins. Not for historical values but because the fact they outlived some pathetic humanoid civilization fills them with joy. So the decapitated head of an immortal guardian like a sphinx makes sense.

Honestly the only aspect that bugged me here and my friend felt the same way. If he hasn't felt pain ever how the hell would a dragon touch him? He would be more OP than that not to mention wouldn't die over a few hits like he was mega nerfed lore/story wise this didn't make sense. Could have left the tomb and then be attacked I would get that, but killing the sphinx off in my perspective just doesn't make sense :/. I enjoy the rest of the story telling just not this

It’s a big fish in a small pond situation, he said he’s never felt pain and he spent all his time hidden away as far as we could tell. So of all the threats he has faced, which were most likely a handful of foolhardy adventures, he has not felt pain.

Sphinxes actually do not have a lot of health comparatively to many other beings of its size. The reason why they are so tanky is because they have IMMUNITY to nonmagical physical damage. This means that most things it faces won't be able to damage it. Now add on top the fact that not many creatures even visit these sphinxes. It is very likely that the sphinx has seen only one or two if not zero visitors, and they were too weak to survive. The dragon came by because of Ripley's scrying ball, but wouldn't have otherwise because most people don't know about this guy's location (Vox Machina only found out because of Osysa). Now between the sphinx and the dragon, the dragon mains its damage in acid damage, which is why you only see sphinx bleed when acid is dealt (the bite at the end is because he breathed the acid into the body of the sphinx. The sphinx end up dying because once you can get past its immunity, like I mentioned, doesn't have that much health in the face of a dragon.

About 800 years before this story, there was a cataclysmic war between the "good" and "evil" gods of this world. Both sides created powerful, god-killing weapons to give to their worshippers so that they could join the fight. The "good" side eventually won, but much of the civilized world was destroyed in the process. The surviving worshippers scattered to try to repopulate the world and rebuild civilization. That was the Divergence. The surviving worshippers kept the god-killing weapons, but over the centuries many of them were stolen, hidden, or lost and thus became legends. Those legendary weapons are collectively known as the Vestiges of Divergence. A Vestige-bearer is anyone who finds and bears a Vestige of Divergence.

Ancient dragons are just that powerful. Sphinxes have a challenge rating of 17, but they actually don’t have that much health, IIRC just a little over 200. they just have resistances and immunities to a lot of things. Ancient Dragons have challenge ratings of 20+ and have upwards of 300+ health. Not to mention that the Chroma Conclave members have been homebrewed by Matt to be significantly stronger than normal ancient dragons to balance the game for his seven person party. I believe Umbrasyl had 600+ hp.
