I've got a story about this method of trapping to share here, from my travels in Africa. This technique has been used for generations by wandering trappers who arrived in a farming community where they weren't previously known and then proceeded to harvest antelope at such an alarming rate that local hunters lodged a complaint with the village chief, urging him to evict the visiting trappers. The chief summoned the nomadic trappers' representative for questioning, and the man showed up with a massive antelope that was still alive, and ready for butchering to feed the chief and his numerous wives. Some days later, the hunters who had lodged the protest about the visiting trappers returned to the chief's hut to find out how soon the invaders would be booted out of the area. The chief welcomed the protesters but then solemnly informed them that since it is God that allocates trapping ingenuity, it would be sacrilegious to evict those upon whom such divine wisdom had been bestowed. Thus ended the matter once and for all.

Now here a man who spends most of his time thinking outside of the box. I especially appreciate you showing how your traps work by catching animals. So many people show what they built and sometimes I wonder if that would even work, but you prove it.

Help! I've made this trap and it works. But almost every time i test fire it, the snare doesn't lift up but instead get's pulled to the side and so doesn't catch the stick I used to test it on. In your video it seems to work every time. What am I doing wrong?
@FPSoutback
@FPSoutback 8 жыл бұрын
+Caleb English I'm not sure how you can make it get pulled to the side but if you have trouble with the snare closing too quick or too low, push a piece of stiff grass into the 4 corners of the snare so it rides up then when triggered.

Do you know if the tension produced by the torsion spring lessen the longer the trap is left set?
@FPSoutback
@FPSoutback 9 жыл бұрын
Yes good question, I hadn't used the best materials (its hard to find straight sticks here!) so the poplar sticks being a soft wood compressed around the lashings and the cord is polyester which doesn't have the best elastic properties. So after it was made it had to be re-tensioned as everything stretched and settled. Using nylon cord (paracord etc.) should provide a better torsion spring due to its inherently better elasticity. You could of course use rubber like strips of inner tube as well. The last design using the fork to create the spring tension had no problems, but that really depends on what tree you choose to use, the eucalypt I used has pretty good tensile properties.
