They were never in any real danger. Those are meliponines, also commonly reffered to as stingless bees. They have a distinct disability - they have no stingers, and cannot sting, which is why they huddle up around the hive. It is their way of defending it.

Thats probably Apis dorsata, the giant honeybee. But when you smoke them that heavily, they are in emergency mode and try to escape. And they can’t coordinate well as their chemical communication is disrupted by the smoke. So the guys were safe. But it could be very dangerous if there was no smoke.

@@johnlaslett5339 it's pretty much to mask or cover up t smell of the pheromone released whenever a threat is near the hive bees tend to release it is the signal to everybody to come and attack and defend from a threat The Hive and Queen also once they sting you they release the same pheromone the smoke itself causes them to scatter making them think it's a forest fire
