Excellent video of the Original Gold's Gym and brings back great memories.. I was fortunate to live 5 miles from the gym and joined when I graduated high school in 1970. Back then a yearly membership was $60 a year. Ray Ruteledge was the gym manager at the time, and more came in the years that followed. I worked out there until it closed about 6 or 7 years later and became a private residence. Also occasionally worked out at the Venice Beach outdoor gym, and the cost was only $12 a year back in the early 70s. Working out at Gold's Gym was an incredible and memorable experience. The videos you showed were pretty much a daily occurence before the big bodybuilding shows at Gold's.

Wow, that's amazing. I love to pick your brain on what you saw and experienced in more detail. How much would say the more serious lifters would balance free weights versus machines? My guess that it was somewhere ~75%+ free weights with pulleys/machines used somewhat sparingly. Any other different patterns you noticed compared to today would be very interesting as well. Thanks for watching and commenting.

You're speaking my language, with this one. I feel like an equipment historian/connoisseur. I have always been fascinated with the topic.

Thanks brother, I knew you'd appreciate this one. Even though this was kind of "unscripted" I was going down a rabbit hole that was really interesting. Particularly that there did seem to be this discovery of the perfect mix of equipment during that time that we still see unchanged to this day.

Back in the day there was a gym in Dexter Mi called The Outback Gym and it was old school rustic as Hell.. im talking chains instead of cables and free weights where you could see the weld marks.. It was a brutal place to workout at but sadly gone now.. Miss those younger days..

That's awesome. People probably didn't realized it at the time how great it would be to have pictures of these gyms. I've trained at a few myself that are still operational. One in particular comes to mind when I was out in Mass, is Hard Nock's Gym in Amesbury. A hole in the wall that had a hardcore feel to it. Famous for where John Cena trained.

Really enjoyed this perspective on the Gold’s era and present day home gyms! I too follow Carlos at Golden Era Bookworm and have learned a great deal from his videos. For lack of a better term I would call your video today:”applied history .” As always great show and channel!

I say all the time that the best equipment was made before 1985. Used the Universal station back then and they were quite effective, we would take away the bench sometimes and perform vertical leg presses with it. I will say though that as far as modern equipment goes Panatta has their act together.

Great comment. Love that you still remember how you used to use the machine. I'm going to look into that Panatta brand some more.

Hello Mike, This is a very good video about the training methods of the past. I have an other question to you not about this video but about the future videos: How do you feel about to make a video about nutrition. I think this is maybe not a bad idea.

@@Zschopauwand thanks my friend. I’ve made a few nutrition videos and would certainly do more. Just not sure how entertaining they’d be. Let me know what you’d be particularly interested in.

@@hybridresistance im interestet in some protein sources that are not meat. Im not a vegan or some like that but i dont like to eat very much meat to reach my protein that i need to build muscles. But i can understand you when you dont do a video about it because this theme is special and not for everybody.

@@Zschopauwand Just curious, do you use any protein powder? That's probably the easiest way to get some extra protein in.
@Zschopauwand
@Zschopauwand 2 күн бұрын
@@hybridresistance yes i use a whey protein for about a week. The time before the use of the protein powder my training was almost countless because my body didnt get enough protein to build muscles. After a week of using one protein shake a day my results are almost as good as 3 months of training without it. I also look at some good nutrition for me. In the morning i eat a big portion of oatmeal. For lunch i drink a protein shake and eat some bread rolls with vegan spread. And in the evening i eat some meat or fish. Before i go to bed i eat some cashew nuts. But i dont eat meat every day because i dont like it so much.

There’s a 2 hour interview with Shannon Sharp and Ronnie Coleman. Big Ron says he only used barbells and dumbbells with very minimal use of cables and machines. I think all the “accessory pieces” are to hook consumers without much functionality. It’s like buying different color fishing lures. They are designed to catch the angler 😂
@hybridresistance

@@619.DRIVER definitely a fair analogy and makes sense to me that that was big Ron’s preference of choice.

@@hybridresistance True. I honestly believe the time put in is WAY more important than what “we” use. I’m guilty. No I don’t need a $400-$600 Rogue barbell because I personally can’t out-lift a $100 Cap brand one. Also there are plenty of videos of bodybuilders from 3rd world countries carving their physique with random scrap iron. But they definitely put in the time. 💪🏽🏋🏽💯

I was anti-machine at one point but I see the error now. Machines are like cables that are already fixed in place for isolation movements. And as he alludes to here, cables have some major advantages in a number of exercises, if not most potential exercise setups. That is, it’s possible that every exercise can be enhanced with a cable (or machine) version over free weights. If you want to see a guy today utilizing cables like few others, see Eric Janicki.
