Nobody is ever topping this. He did everything on that stage in a freaking monsoon and held every single person in the palm of his hand the entire time. I was living in Italy when this happened and found an all night bar that was playing the game for a few Americans and it was absolutely worth staying up til 3AM for. As it was beginning I got a text from a friend in the States saying “…did Prince just summon fucking lightning?” Yes. He did.

Sorry to tell you it was a visual effect that was added for the show. However don't take my word for it, you can easily check it out... but the rain was real, tho. The marching band intro is "1999" and His Royal Badness fused it with "Baby I'm a star". "Proud Mary" is a Credence Clearwater Revival song that has been popularized by (shady Ike and) Tina Turner.

Prince had become a master of a 15 min show, over the years, there are many examples of this. i don't there are many others who could do a whole show as good as Prince's short show. he made them look effortless. a true genius.

The sheer ability to push through the weather conditions here and not get electrocuted... Just staggering. Is it the greatest half time show? It has to be. So much a one-man performance despite all the bells and whistles. Is it the greatest Prince performance? No, it can't be.not by a long way. His guitar solos are compromised by the rain. His equipment is dying. The guitar is basically shot by the end of Purple Rain. And the band said all their instruments where dead due to water damage after the gig. And let's mention a guy who wrote 100s of songs and 10s of albums gives half his song choices to other artists... Queen/Foo Fighters/Jimi or Bob/Ike & Tina. Whatever serves the show... The drummer there is Cora Coleman-Dunham. She was on another video a while back and she was drummer for a couple of years around 2006-2008 if I remember correctly off hand. This is a culturally iconic moment though. Staggering talent to even make it through that peformance never mind excel. The perfect companion piece to this is the "press conference" he held for this Super Bowl performance. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpvbeY1rhMlqsNU

I've only seen a couple of half-time shows, being British, we don't get it here really. However, anything else would disappoint. Other shows could have fireworks and fancy choreography, but this had everything! The huge silhouette made the show. One of the shortest people in the industry and not only the biggest in talent and sound made himself bigger on stage than anyone else. I'm sure if the slot was longer, he'd have a few more epic surprises. Great time period for him.

The amount of confidence in his abilities Prince had was astonishing. Prince could've just had another guitarist on stage with him to lighten the load. No one would have cared or thought twice about it. Despite shouldering lead guitar and vocals Prince still strutted around the stage and participated in the choreography. Often putting 15ft or more between himself and the microphone knowing he needed to get back to finish the songs. Very impressive stuff. Great reaction video. Was waiting for this one. Obviously Prince was a great guitar player but he had more going on during live performance than just soloing. You nailed the dynamics in your reaction. Thank you!

Great reaction. He brought in a frikkin’ marching band. Lol. That was a Florida A&M, one of the greatest bands over the years. This was crazy. The minute Purple Rain broke out, critics tried to compare Prince to Joni Hendrix. He resisted that comparison, rightfully so (he sounds a lot more like Carlos Santana) for his entire career. Then he had the balls to play All Along the Watchtower at the Super Bowl. This whole performance was a tip of the hat to musicians who came before and after him. A few notes - that is Cora Coleman Dunham on drums. Also, word is that the instruments all “died” that night. They literally did not function after that performance from the downpour. Another tidbit, in over 40 years of Super Bowls it had never rained. The morning of this Super Bowl, the producer called Prince to reassure him, something to the effect of “you know, it’s raining. Are you going to be ok?” After a brief pause, Prince asked, “can you make it rain harder?” Your humor is great on these reaction videos. Thank you!

I bow down to the Minneapolis genius whenever this video appears. It's all LIVE and the rain is coming down in buckets. It appears that a lightening bolt hits the stage right before Prince is elevated onto the platform -- just an amazing opening. There are so many things that could have gone wrong from electrocution, equipment failures to slipping on the stage with 144 million eyes watching worldwide. Prince performed like a warrior with precision, emotion and taste - it was a perfect show for this audience. This is old school which we are not likely to see ever again. It's not mentioned enough, but he was a spectacular arranger and bandleader. I loved his nod to both Jimi and his fellow Minnesotan Bob Dylan.

Sensational!! Nearly 40 years not having rained at the Super Bowl and it was bucketing down. The producers of the half time show were worried about all the electrical outlets for Prince's 4 electric guitars. The director asked Prince if he was okay to play in the downpour and Prince said "Can you make it rain harder?" lol They were also worried about the slippery surface of the stage, especially when wet with Prince's dancers "The Twinz" (Aussie sisters Maya and Nandy McClean) dancing in high heels but the whole show went off without a hitch. Prince was once asked "don't you get tired of performing Purple Rain every night?". His answer was "I never get tired of the reaction" or words to that effect. All about the fans. After the Sign o' The Times world tour (UK Leg got cancelled), he was going to retire from live shows because it was too draining. He lived on B12 shots to get through it. Thankfully he reconsidered. He must've learned a lot though to continue right up until a few days before he passed always reinventing. That stage was created *I believe* for the 21 Nights in London shows (this performance was that same year the Earth Tour (London) started). Great shows. I was right at the curl of the symbol bit by his piano with a bunch of celebs which was a bit of a shocker when I saw them. I won't name drop, but it added to the already great experience especially when we started dancing together. I think he used that stage until the Welcome 2 America Tour in 2011 - but others will correct if wrong. My favourite live shows were the 1995 Live Experience Tour though. My favourite incarnation of the NPG as well.

@@YesYouCANPlayGuitar I know a lot of people, local musicians who have dropped out of doing live performances. They now only do studio work, their own, or session studio work for Pete Waterman and co. One fills in as a session drummer for a other bands touring, It really is gruelling. I struggled to just support my friends and I was just following them around to dodgy bars to make up numbers if anything bad happened (only twice, gunfire and a brick thrown at us through a window while waiting to setup the stage haha). But even in my 20s just doing that was enough for me. A lot of music based YTers seem to say the same as you. With tech, you can do your own thing, yes, it has it's down side, I do love it when it feels intimate and it is you and the band, the rest of the captivated audience but you know what? I've been so disappointed with a lot of live shows. Sometimes, it's best to enjoy the music rather than be disappointed after paying money. One biggish kinda-rock-sell-out band is so so bad live. I was gutted. If my ticket wasn't free I'd be wanting my money back. Respect to them for performing for the fans though, maybe that's all some want. But y'know what I'm getting at.

Some number of months after O(+> made his transition in 2016, I was reading about archivists working at Paisley, cataloguing his belongings. As they were going through the various instruments and his guitars, they discovered there was somehow still a bit of rainwater sloshing around in that blue guitar, left over nearly 10 years later from this Super Bowl performance. There’s a different version of this performance with commentary by some of the venue/NFL halftime staff interspersed through it. According to one of those Sources, there had never been rain during any of the Super Bowl performances prior to this one in the 40 year history NFL halftime shows. They called Prince and asked him if he was still comfortable performing…out in the rain…playing an electric Guitar…. according to the source, Prince asked him, “can U make it rain harder?” ☔️ I did not know about musicians occasionally missing the edge of the stage like that! Prince did SO much touring over the years though, he probably developed a pretty solid sense of spacial awareness on stage. “Every performance there’s always a curveball“. Whatever cloud Prince’s spirit is sitting on right now, I swear I heard him smile when you said that. I think he would’ve taken that as a great compliment.

Most HBCU marching bands perform all genres and are used to showcasing musicianship skills but also putting on a great "show" for the audiences with drills, dancing, etc.

@@YesYouCANPlayGuitar I live in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul) and it was rumored that Prince had said "yes" to performing at the Superbowl that was to be held in Minneapolis as the host city 2017. However, he died in April 2016. 😪 Justin Timberlake became the Superbowl act instead. He did pay tribute to Prince in 1 song-merge...and the camera-broadcast technicians did some CGI to turn Minneapolis' downtown landscape and interstate...alight in purple reflection glow. If you look at Justin's Superbowl performance on KZbin, you will see that. So Minneapolis (host city) and St. Paul (state capital 15 minutes away) were happy to host Superbowl visitors...but super sad because Prince was to be the performing act...in his hometown this time. Even the Minnesota Vikings football team (of Minneapolis) made it to the semi-finals...because they were trying to do it for Prince (& that they were the host city).
@vecarter5692 жыл бұрын
@@YesYouCANPlayGuitar Speaking of city lights awashed in Purple glow (my comment about the Timberlake Prince tribute)...Minneapolis and St. Paul both were lit in purple once Prince died...lit in purple from that Thursday of his passing through that Sunday night. Even the Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank got permission to change its lights to purple. Both major bridges changed their lights to purple. Both concert arenas were alight in purple with their outside banner boards showcasing his symbol or his Purple Rain motorcycle picture. All the Sports teams (MN Twins-baseball, MN Timberwolves & the MN Lynx (basketball teams), MN Wild (Hockey team)...all changed their social media pages to the color purple instead of their normal colors. MN Vikings (football) are already purple & gold...but posted their Prince-created Vikings song on their pages. Each sports team listed also how Prince affected them personally. The most poignant media posting was the MN Timberwolves & MN Lynx pages. Prince was a huge basketball lover and threw private championship victory parties at Paisley Park for the Lynx. The wolf and the Lynx respectively are the mascots for the teams. So their media posts said "When Doves Cry, Wolves Cry. When Doves Cry, Lynx Cry." 🕊😪💜

Ohio Players, Heatwave, Lakeside, Rodger Troutman and Zapp, Slave, Sun, Faze O and more all from Dayton and all hot at the same time. Beautiful time period growing up here. Another great reaction as usual 😃. I agree with many of the comments here, especially the fact that Prince is the greatest all around musician/ performer that I’ve seen in my time on earth and I’ve been following him since the early 80’s as a preteen as well as many artists/groups before, during, and after. I am not a Colts or Bears fan so when I saw that performance “Prince” I was done watching the Super Bowl that day 😆.

Another cool prince reaction. I like the way u break down the guitar playing as a musician to those of us who arent musically inclined. 1987, maybe sweden, prince was doing an outdoor show, this would've been the beginning of the sign o the times tour, it startrd raining, prince told the band, "keep playing" rained harder, "keep playing" then lightning hit the keyboard. He stopped the show, then went in the studio to make the sign o the times concert film. Some was filmed, maybe in paris, the rest filmed at paisley park studio. The biggest challenge for the recording engineer was she had to take the 200 people in paisley park, and make them sound like 20,000 people. She said it was so much work put into it, she never went back and watched the film. The tour was initially going to be strictly and overseas tour.

The way he does purple rain, and its down pouring like crazy. He was such an amazing artist, his studio was 8 mins from my folks place, and i grew up always going by it. I had the amazing privilage of meeting him and getting to talk to him while i was working at a movie theater in Minnesota. He rented the whole theater room, and i got to bring him his snacks, he was so nice in person. People say he is rude, but he was just so kind hearted, and a wonderful person. Glad i got to meet him once before he passed away.

Prince fooled many of us into thinking that Purple Rain would be his one and only masterpiece. Everyone goes back to the song Purple Rain because it's a well crafted song. But in reality the song is the manifestation of all the work he has put into the music industry at a young age. We're talking about 16 to 24. He gave so much. So that success is not an accident. The commitment to his ambitious career was phenomenal. It's subliming. I love how impressed you are about the Marching Band 😅. It made sense 2 have them there.

The proper accolades for Prince are already in the comments, so I'll just ask you question given your music biz experience: it seems like Prince tried to add some spontaneous guitar licks in at the 16:23 mark, but the producer (Don Mischer) pushed the marching band coda up in the mix (I suppose...to end the set as planned). Do you hear a change in the sound mix at this point as well?

You spoke about the way everyone on stage had to continually watch what they were doing - esecially in the rain - one of my favorite (kinda quirky) moments here: during the second song ("Baby I'm a Star"), he's walking to the mic and the dancers are twirling around him. He seems to accidentally bump into one of them, and, in the middle of singing a line he actually says "Oh, sorry" - live in front of thousands in the stands and millions more on tv, he takes time to be polite. I feel like this speaks volumes about his character... makes me love him more!

@@YesYouCANPlayGuitar There’s another performance available here on KZbin you might find interesting - it’s a little long so you may not want to do a reaction but I think it might be worth your while: 1984, While working on Purple Rain he put on a benefit concert at 1st Avenue in order to test the songs he’d written for the movie on an actual audience (he did this quite a bit from what I understand). I think the video title is “Making of Rain” - not 100% on the name - but it’s a very intimate look at how he started out. Very cool stuff! Really continuing to enjoy your trip down this rabbit hole, thank you!

I watched a reaction to this last night where 4 of the 5 people were *somehow* convinced that because *most* artists pre-record their tracks for the half time show and several times Prince has only one hand on the strings of the guitar, he was not playing live. I was so upset as you can *clearly* tell that's BS. It's PRINCE! The comments already raked them over the coals (including multiple guitarists), so I nicely pointed out some helpful things that prove it.

A question I've always had... The halftime act is required to record a run-through ahead of the actual day (a full dress rehearsal) in case it needs to be shown pre-recorded instead of the live broadcast. Prince did record one. Yet why has it never been released? It would be amazing to see how this looked in daylight and whether he had to fundamentally change choreography or not. If he didn't change anything, the kudos to all on stage there goes up tenfold.
