I would like to say , as a 62 year old whose been a huge Prince fan since his first album , yes indeed, Purple Rain and 1999 was huge for Prince , 1999 made him a superstar, Purple Rain made him a megastar, so it is indeed rightfully so that someone that doesn’t know his music at all would explore those albums first . But just know , that those album were still just chapters of an amazing music career that started long before those albums, and ended only a year before his death in 2016, even though more music has been released posthumously. This is how much music he created, so it is great to see some reactions of his early or later work , for a change…

Prince’s ‘1999’ is amazing. He recorded it overnight after a jam session with his band. When they returned next day, he had done a two album masterpiece. It has funk, rock, new wave, dance and a great ballad.

I love Prince's funk, his groove ... much better than Michael's pop 😆 music like Controversy makes you automatically dance - even in your chair. Back in the 80s there were 2 discotheques in the town were I lived. One was more for germans and white americans, so they played the "normal" disco music, the other one had much more black americans (soldiers and civilians), that's the place where Prince and similar was played and it always looked awesome, when the dancefloor was packed and everybody had fun 😄 fun fact: last Saturday I listened to Prince during my breakfast ... one of my favourite songs is "My name is Prince" 🤘

To this day there's a Prince camp and an MJ camp. From the very beginning, I was team Prince. We naturally gravitate to artists who speak our musical language. Prince's sound was unconventional, decadent, evocative, provocative, and continuously evolving. Perhaps, his sound evolved faster than some of our musical sensibilities but isn't that the nature of a true artist? Though I'm team Prince, even I couldn't escape MJ's "IT FACTOR". I too owned the iconic red 'Thriller' jacket.😁

When I played this in ~1983 or so the first time for friends, they were horribly offended that it had the Lord's Prayer in it, as Prince was like this sex maniac to them. I've never stopped listening (and gathering the good shit!).

So happy to see you digging into Prince's studio work (which is unmatched), but to really "get" Prince you have to head into the live material. I think you would be blown away by the Sign O The Times Concert film (watch that instead of Purple Rain). Prince is a phenomenon on stage, the musicianship, the stage craft, the charm, the dancing, the humour, the band. Incredible, takes his music to another level live. The We Are The World snub was due to Prince really not being comfortable in crowds (believe it or not he was extremely shy socially). He offered to do a guitar solo, they declined. Instead he donated a track to the full USA for Africa album. I think some of the controversy was stirred up by Quincy Jones who has often made critical comments about Prince - possibly as Prince was the antithesis of what Quincy did - Prince wrote everything, could play all the instruments and Produced himself - he didn't need a Quincy. Prince released a track about the whole incident as a B-Side (called Hello as a dig against Lionel Ritchie). It explains his perspective on the night and what happened - it's a fascinating listen!

"Controversy" is probably the first Prince song I can recall hearing on the radio. It has always landed itself in my top 5, then later top 3 Prince songs and still hovers at the top of my favorites. It is SUCH a vibe. This song never loses its luster for me. I love this dark, dissonant, new-wave funk. And I love how Prince explores the questions he had to wade through so often during that early time in his career. Very cool video to this song as well, though it's the shorter radio edit of the song. I'm happy you all chose to listen to the entire album version of this classic jam. 💜

Controversy was the first Prince album (cassette!) I ever bought, not long after hearing the 1999 LP. You should react to one of the myriad live performances of this song floating around, as he played it live throughout his career (often pairing it with Mutiny, a song he wrote a year or two later and that was originally released by The Family, the group he created from the members of The Time left behind by Morris Day after the Purple Rain movie was released).

I believe this was the first Prince album I bought, (this or Dirty Mind) and at this time he was still bubbling under the surface of that impending eruption. As far as musical rivalries go, that's been around since early blues musicians tried to 'cut' one another's performance. Then think of Ray Charles and Jerry Lee Lewis in their heydays, etc. Great upload here, oh, and he definitely ups the ante on the next couple tracks of this album.

I am so glad that you did the album version since the video is a shortened version. Keep in mind that he was only 21 when he wrote this. Yes, Prince often seemed to be very serious, but he was actually very funny and loved to laugh. That guitar riff you were both doing air guitar to is referred to as “chicken grease” in the funk world. I’m really hoping you’ll check out Prince live. Everyone simply must see his epic performance of Purple Rain live in Syracuse in 1985. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJ6TZKqngb5mhMUsi=BFKd4w5FsQF655S9 If you want to see him dancing, I have always loved the Baby I’m a Star/Push performance from the Special Olympics in 1991. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i53Gd2CFo7Rslbssi=xsNem-pWNLDButx5 There are sooo many great live performances though. Though the documentary leaves out that Prince did end up contributing an original song he wrote and recorded ("For The Tears In Your Eyes") for the We Are The World album, and he made a video for an acoustic version of the song that was played at the 1985 massive Live Aid concerts.. That was the main draw for me to buy the album in the 80s as I was (and still am) an avid fam of Prince's. And so many people wrote Prince's hesitation and decision to not attend the WATW recording as arrogance or lack of care for the charitable cause that inspired the song and album. But I didn't understand for many years how Prince was ironically, socially awkward off stage and would become very uncommunicative around folks he didn't know too well. So imagine how daunting being in a roomful of peers that he knew of, but didn't personally know well. And It was really MJ's territory, despite MJ extending the invitation to Prince. And Prince was well known by his own people to be very controlling in the studio. So Prince would have felt very much like a fish out of water there which is why he was trying to find another way to contribute.

The witness of the mozart of our generation and alrhough 1999 album was the album that made him a superstar, the early work laid.the foundations and his early work was raw and opinionated and the world wasnt ready for this genius. The 2nd song on the album, sexuality arguably exemplifies this more than anything. The social commentary on this song is very prefound.

the reason not to follow we are the world movement was that he was forced to it and he denied and well he did. How can you be in a place where you are not happy if industry dictates what to do for the money and fame. Prince owned that already so he set himself out of this. Many thought that was a dick move but in fact it was so wise when you think that everything was planned for the musuc industry, Quincy Jones and MJ fame. Prince would never obey or betray his beliefs in music and how charity should help people in need. He did his own effort to the album and did not kissed music industry asses and he was not bother to regret either.

When you pull us away from the track,, it’s like you burn down the bridge,, and we can’t walk over the water‼️‼️ It’s like we’re watching a great movie in a theater,, and then someone’s cell phone rings in the middle of a great scene.
