I suppose it was quite inevitable when it has been so very long since the last coronation. I tend to think that from what we have seen so far, Charles will get a good balance between innovation and tradition, and between simplicity and ceremony - but it’s certainly going to be interesting to see.

Just a note from a thread and craft practitioner. In order to hand-make gold lace, it is necessary to take sheets of high carat gold, and roll them gently around fine thread, usually silk, although wool or wool/silk blends are commercially available. static electricity can help the gold adhere, as can the moisture from your breathe by gently breathing on the thread/gold as you wind it. You do not want to waste gold by overlapping it, but you also do not want any raw thread showing either. It is a really tricky process, which I'm sure is done commercially now by machines. And this is just getting the thread ready to tat -- that is another whole very difficult process. Working with gold leaf runs in the family -- my great-grandfather worked applying gold leaf to cabinetry. It's nice to keep part of that tradition going in some part.

I'm sure like most teen boys its a bit embarrassing but as I'm sure their parents will tell them, its an honour and a prestigious first step for their future. @@elizabethcornwell4156 If you listened to the video, the boys chosen as the king's pages are all sons of the aristocracy and don't need to be bribed. They're used to the pomp and ceremony. Palace staff don't go down to the local high school and select boys at random to be pages. Ludo Vica - it wouldn't be embarrassing to the boys they have chosen as pages because this is all part of the lives they're used to as the children of members of the aristocracy. As members of the aristocracy, I doubt they'd ever be down at the local Job Centre - they have all the opportunities should they choose to take them and work hard. Being a member of the aristocracy probably means they have to work harder to justify the professions they choose so as not to be seen as, as taking advantage.

👩‍💻 " ... God bless the Prince of Wales." My eye is on William. Who would have thought I would have seen one coronation, let alone two. I am not a fan of KCIII & QC; but I am a staunch fan of the Royal Family. I hope the British people receive all worthy things from their king. But my money is on the Prince of Wales to remain strong in guiding and advising his father to the logical ends of reigning. We have seen the Prince's strength and loving durability during recent events. I am an American, and when some dullard is elected, "We the People" can throw the shyster out of office. KCIII is my oldest brother's age, and Prince William is my youngest child's age. I believe we will see the great influence of Queen Elizabeth II in the living memories of the next two Kings of England. I see Her Majesty's fingerprints all over Prince William's life. The Prince of Wales was lovingly tutored by this great woman, and KCIII finally bending his knee to his Sovereign's will at Her death and in his old age.🙋‍♀️🥰🇺🇲🇬🇧

Wednesday, 5 April 2023. No. No No. I hope the coronation robes are not scaled down. If the new king keeps scaling down everything, his coronation is going to end up looking like the inauguration of the US president, which is essentially the swearing in of a new civil servant. The appointment of Prince George of Wales as a Page of Honour is a nice touch -- I suppose -- as it gives him a chance to really participate in the ceremony, but I would prefer if he entered the abbey as a Prince of the Realm, rather than as a page. Modern coronation is a contradiction in terms! It sticks in the throat. I like your theme music Allan. Whats happening with the Stone of Scone (a.k.a. The Stone of Destiny)?

@Quetzalcoatl The robes for the priests at Charles II’s coronation in 1661 (?) are extant and will be used for the coronation of Charles III. I saw it in a documentary about Westminster Abbey. I expect the robes of the peers have been in refrigeration since 1953 and the ones chosen to attend will drag them out and wear them. The government officials are allowed to wear their robes. Rewear is a far better solution for the environment than new with plastic, IMHO. But then I get too hot and sticky in synthetics, so I am prejudiced.

I’m guessing they will forgo the ermine because KCIII is such an environmentalist, and fur has long been a no-no. You want he pomp and circumstance for a king’s coronation, but there are ways to get around ridiculously over the top traditions and still keep the grandness of it all intact. I was surprised the Duke of Edinburgh’s son wasn’t included, though. As an American, I’m really looking forward to the coronation.

Thank you for that interesting information. Ermine is the pelt of a dead animal. I think Charles will be sensitive to use animal fur for decoration.

Eight plus a master of the robes, which is I think the point I was trying to make, perhaps clumsily. When that role was abolished in 1936 the master of the robes was replaced by a ninth page.

Prince George looks like Diana to me. The tragedy of her death and the divorce that removed her from ever becoming queen is still a tragedy. It’s like elephant in the Abby for me and others, who won’t mention it. I won’t watch the coronation, although the history and the coronations has always interested me. I am old now and younger people who get with the times will. I guess that’s as it should be, but I can’t rise to it. I do enjoy your videos very much as I am an enthusiast of English history and Great Britain. Blessings for you Mr. Barton , I hope not to ever offend. The only benefit of old age is to say what one thinks.

Very interesting, thank you ! Now a question : are the maids of honor unmarried ? In that case, why are they wearing a tiara ? Or are they flower crowns ?

Yes I noticed that and would also love to know because my understanding is that Tiara's are only worn by married women
@spottedreptile2671

This is a bit of a myth. Princess Margaret, Princess Anne, and Queen Victoria all wore tiaras as unmarried ladies. They are more usually a signal of an adult woman, that is, attaining the age of 18, but nowhere is the requirement that a woman must be married in order to wear one. There is the tradition that the tiara symbolises the change from innocence when a bride is crowned with love, and that is the usual interpretation but it’s not an unbreakable rule.
