You can’t go wrong with Prince. He has so many great songs and performances. This song was from the 90’s. His first album was released in 1978 when he was 20. He released an album almost every year of his life. He also performed a lot of the music on his protégé acts albums. He played all the instruments on his first 3 albums. Some awesome live performances check out Purple Rain live in Syracuse 1985, I Would Die 4 U/Baby I’m a Star, his Super Bowl performance, Creep at Coachella, Kiss music video, When Doves Cry extended video version, America music video, just to name a few.

That is when PRINCE was having a huge battle with his label. Changed his name to a symbol (artist formally known as PRINCE) and wrote SLAVE on his face. Big long story there! PRINCE is one of the bests ever!

It was a smart move by Prince to change to a symbol that he trade marked. Because WB was threatening to sue him if he used the name Prince to record any future albums since “Prince” was owned by WB publishing-since Prince still had a contract through about year 2000. Even if Prince made other albums through other labels they could sue him. George Clinton had a famous battle for his band name parliament-funkadelic with his old label( it cost him tens of millions; spent all his money and lost.). Prince rightly avoided that issue.

Prince was a unique generational talent. I love ‘I Would Die 4U’ and ‘Alphabet Street’. I would love to see you react to ‘Darling Nikki’!

The thing about quitting of using his birth name and writing "slave" on his cheek is more than interesting. Prince realised that Warner Bros was the owner of the masters of his recordings as well as his name. So, when WB said he was publishing too much music Prince started a legal battle against them to recover the rights over his music and name (1993-1996). As he did not can use his name so he changed to an unpronounceable symbol and show the way he felt in that relationship with WB writing slave on the face. Trivia: it was the media that started calling him "The Love Symbol", "The Symbol", "The Artist Formerly Known As Prince (TAFKAP)" or simply "The Artist". If you come back to this album in the future, I suggest to react to "Shhh" but in a Live show.

The slave ON THE FACE was his statement against WB his music label. Master recordings for albums are just that “masters.” Prince at the time did not own his own master recordings of any of his albums. He equated that with paying for the house and the record company keeps the house. Since Prince paid to record, make, and market all of his own albums through WB. He thought that was unfair. To quote Prince; “ If you don’t own your masters, your master owns you.” Thus, the slave reference on the cheek.

@@DoubleTakeJC Prince was the guy open the doors for artists to own their masters. We see artists in our generation today fighting for that because of Prince. That's why Kanye always mentions Prince with that. Although Prince played over 14 instruments, arranged, wrote, engineered, performed his own music. So a lot of artists that are fighting for their masters are not really artists like Prince. Prince could truly fight for his ownership because dude was doing 97% of the work on every album.
