The problem is that there is no actual definition, in any legal or concrete sense, of what a 'working royal' actually is. Traditionally, it has been an informal, in-family arrangement, done by people who don't really need to work for a living as a favour their monarch who is also the head of the family, because it is an honour, as well as out of a sense of duty and service to their country. Doing it purely for financial gain or personal fame was never part of it. All these notions are now slightly out of fashion and clearly people like H&M have no understanding of such concepts. The payment the working royals receive out of the Sovereign Grant is not a salary, because it is not an actual job, with all the HR infrastructure about hours, working conditions and advancement opportunities etc that that would include. It is only really intended to help cover costs and allow them to keep to a certain royal standard of living and appearances. By most modern rich people's standards, it is a pittance - M would spend most of it on a couple of outfits. But without a clear legal definition of 'working royal', it is impossible to put that concept into any legal infrastructure, such as the Act of Succession which governs LoS, for example. It is, effectively, another slightly archaic but charming loophole, that H&M very successfully exploited. So people keep complaining that nothing is being done by the RF without realising that the whole situation is much more difficult and complicated than first glance shows.

There was the 'straight outta Compton' one, which was written by British journalist Ruth Styles but from New York, for the Mail Online. The article itself was simply commenting, approvingly, on how much times have changed that a British royal prince can now marry someone from that sort of background. The fact that M wasn't actually from that sort of background at all was not the reason that offence was taken - no, it was the implication that she actually was from a deprived primarily black area which was somehow labelled racist. Arguably, her outrage at being thought of as being from there was the really racist thing, because she clearly thought she was above it. There was also an article in Britain by Boris Johnson's sister Rachel Johnson which referred to M's 'exotic' blood, which caused an uproar about racism, even thought the whole slant of the piece was positive about the injection of M's fresh/modern/different bloodlines into the 'blue, watery, inbred' royal bloodline. Nobody complained about any inherent racism of the 'blue, watery' comment, interestingly enough, even though that was clearly not intended as a compliment to the white RF, unlike the 'exotic' descriptor. They just leapt on the word 'exotic' which, like many other words, has recently lost its original meaning, intended here, as originating in or characteristic of a distant foreign country, and become considered as a sort of racist slur. This twisting of the real meaning and intention of something into a racism that was never there has become characteristic of the whole H&M debate ever since. Rachel Johnson immediately apologised, for an offence she neither committed not intended, but the damage was never undone, because M was actively looking for something of that sort to utilise for her racism victim narrative, so it was pressed into service regardless.

I’ve been visiting the US for many years on a regular basis and have always found Americans wonderful people who ask loads of questions about the UK and are incredibly welcoming. Last year I was paying for some goods I purchased and the woman cashing up my purchases me asked if I was British (a normal question I have been asked in the US often). Then she said ‘how would the British treat someone like me if I visited?’. I was confused as to why she was asking that, as I couldn’t understand why she would think we would treat an American cashier any differently in the uk. I apologised and asked her to clarify and she said ‘a black person’. I can honestly say I hadn’t really noticed what colour she was. In the uk we live, work and have friends who are all shades of black and white. I asked why she asked that and she said ‘after all the problems about the British being racist and all’. I was shocked that someone could think that about the uk and told her that Britain is a multicultural country and has been for a very long time and the 99% of the population didn’t even notice someone’s colour and that every country had its unpleasant people but I had never met a racist at home. I can only assume that the underlying cause of this question was the rubbish that MM and H had started and it made me want to weep with sorrow and frustration.
