Maceo Parker, the sax-man here, started with James Brown in the 60s, played with Parliament Funkadelic in the 70s, and played with Prince in the 2000s. Also, Prince could play more than 27 instruments. It was about 27 instruments when he started out.

Correction, Prince was about 19yo when he got his contract with WB. He played all the instruments, sang all the parts, wrote the songs, arranged, produced, and mixed his creations.

@@SlimDaddy9 I added 27 instruments. I didn't mean he was 27 years old. Besides, Prince didn't much believe in birthdays.

He would have been like 53 years old here. Still looks great though! The whole 27 instruments thing comes from the credits from his first album, "For You," that was released in 1978 when Prince was 19 years old. People seem to run with that number, but the instruments listed there also include several different types of synths and stupid things like hand claps and finger snaps. 😂 But he was definitely proficient on piano, guitar, bass, and drums. I would also consider drum machine programming to be a completely separate skillset that would count as another instrument. Also, percussion instruments like marimba and glockenspiel should also be counted, although I probably wouldn't count things like tambourine, maraca, or cabasa since those don't require as much skill. My mom was at a show in the 90s at Paisley Park where Prince got bored, cut the band off mid-song, and rolled a harp out and just sat down and played harp. There were also rare occasions where he played trumpet and saxophone, but it wasn't often. He was definitely talented on all the instruments he chose to pick up, but I think saying 27 instruments is quite a stretch. Lol. I always loved seeing him play the bass and piano though. 💜 Great request, JJ!

Thanks for providing that context, Samantha. I can never figure out a good way to explain the “27 instruments” thing, but you summed it up perfectly. I do remember hearing one of his horn players (I can’t remember who) saying that he wasn’t quite playing something the way Prince wanted it so Prince took the instrument and showed him what he wanted 😂

The origin of the legend of the 27 instruments was born with his first album. It's just a legend because he played everything in the album: a total of 27 different guitars, bass guitars, keyboards, pianos, drums... all of them the traditional rock instruments. In other words he played guitar, bass, drums, drum machines, keys and pianos. In another words part 2? You can say (please, the added edition to this example at the end) "I can play the guitar" or if you have 3 guitars "I can play 3 instruments". Is that clear? Because English is not my first language... I want to be crystal clear, I'm not criticising Prince: he is my number one musician. Prince could play all those instruments at a very high level when he had like 16 or 17 years all. And he never stopped playing, recording, producing, writing... He was out of this world. The real king of music. Edit of the example: You can say "I can play 2 instruments, guitar and bass" or if you have 3 guitars and 2 bass guitars (knowing how to play them) you can say "I can play 2 instruments" or "I play my 5 instruments", wich basically are guitar and bass but sounds confusing. Better now?

@oskarobit I accept you are not necessarily criticising Prince and are clearly a fan (as am I) and although I have replied to you extensively on another thread, I just want to pick up on your guitar comment. Sure, if you play electric guitar and have a Stratocaster, a Telecaster and a Les Paul, it would be misleading to say you play 3 instruments, But it's acceptable to say 2 if you also play acoustic guitar (proficiently). If you can play banjo (itself a stringed, "guitar-like" instrument), you can play 3 instruments, as it is massively different. If you can play an Oud, that's 4. In other words, some instruments may appear the same or similar, but they can be very different beasts. Peace

@@oskarobit It's cool bro. Please don't take any of my arguments personally, or as an attack. As a multi-instrumentalist myself, I'm just pointing out that it's not as simple as "he only played 4 (that wasn't you who said that), or even 7 instruments. The voice itself is also an instrument (people often forget that), as is the studio (and he was a master on that desk!). Have a good day (where are you from, just out of interest?)

Never ever let anyone tell you that Prince ever played any instruments beyond keyboards, drums, bass and guitar. He NEVER did. Not on a studio recording, and not live. There's some myths about that, but that it is all they are. However, those ARE the instruments of pop music and it was all that he needed to be able to play. And he played them exceptionally well. If he needed strings or wind instruments, he hired someone else to play them. But what he did do was and remains unprecedented.

Prince’s debut album, he played these instruments. I think this is a pretty good list and he was only 18/19 years old at the time it was recorded . In the album's notes he's listed as the musician behind "all vocals" as well as (deep breath) "electric guitar, acoustic guitar, bass, bass synth, singing bass, Fuzz bass, electric piano, acoustic piano, mini-Moog, poly-Moog, Arp string ensemble, Arp Pro Soloist, Oberheim four-voice, clavinet, drums, syndrums, water drums, slapsticks, bongos, congas, finger cymbals, wind chimes, orchestral bells, woodblocks, brush trap, tree bell, hand claps and finger snaps".

@@Mindflux_Zubzub he or she is right, period. You are not, for sure, Geologist and, for sure too, you can tell a rock from concrete. All the instruments listed in his first album are models and marks of guitar, bass, drums, drum machines, percussion instruments, synths and pianos. That's a hundred times better than an average artist and we, the fans, don't need stupid legends.

@@oskarobit "right, period"? So, no room for debate? Your Geology analogy doesn't work - your example is like saying you know that drums aren't piano, two entirely different things, like rock and concrete. However, within the "rock" category there are many different types with very different properties and it would take someone with experience to identify the rock and tell you what its properties are. I'm not a geologist and wouldn't pretend to know what I'm talking about and try and school a geologist about their own expertise. I am, however, a multi-instrumentalist for over 45 years and a composer, producer and performer for over 30 years, so I DO know what I'm talking about when it comes to music and musical instruments!! At least you have mentioned double the instruments than the person I replied to did. The 4 categories he mentioned is a massive oversimplification - at least you differentiated between synth and piano, as an example, because a synth player is most definitely not a pianist. Yes, they could play notes, chords and scales on a piano, but would in no way have the right fingering and playing techniques to sound particularly good, it would take some years of practice to master the piano. But there are sufficient differences between synths that would mean different skills to play them properly (without even going in to programming and sound design!). Do you have any idea why a Mini-Moog is completely different to play in comparison to a Yamaha CS80? Also (without Googling and given your implying that you don't need to be a musician to talk about instruments), which category of instrument does piano belong to - keyboard, string, or percussion? Percussion also covers an enormous range of instruments requiring very different skills (and years of practice) to play properly. Just because you can play drum-kit, doesn't mean you can play congas. Just because you can play congas in no way means you can play tabla, by any stretch (even though congas and tabla are 2, skinned drums played by hand). So, I'm going to assume you are not a musician either. That doesn't mean you can't have an opinion, but it will likely mean your assumptions are incorrect. Just because you know a plane flies, doesn't mean you can fly the plane! And even if you can fly a single-prop Cessna, there's no way you'd even get an F-35 off the ground! Finally, it was "the fans" (and, to an extent, WB) who were responsible for the 27-instrument myth. Prince simply listed the equipment used on that album (it was a fairly common practice in those days - Jean-Michel Jarre listed every synth he used on the ground-breaking album "Oxygene") - he never said himself that he played 27 instruments, fans just took that list and ran with it (with some label encouragement - they had a new artist to sell!). The truth is, it doesn't really matter - a highly-skilled multi-instrumentalist is enough, putting a number on it is irrelevant and contentious. But arbitrarily diluting it down to 4 CATEGORIES of instrument is misleading and inaccurate and this kind of comment always comes from non-musician who, frankly, do not have the experience or expertise to make such statements and are factually incorrect. PERIOD Lol

@@Mindflux_Zubzub this sounds stupid to me, sorry. From the beginning analysing my example, it seems you have too much time to spare between gigs, then you tried to differentiate a piano from a synth like a pro... but forgetting the most importan differences: a traditional piano doesn't have electricity but have pedals. Oh, and they come in different sizes and with larger keyboards by number of octaves! Wow! Thank to the Time Lords you didn't try to explain a piano is a string instrument. Oh you say yourself as a musician, producer, blah blah. Congratulations. I have a 30 year career on stage with some really huge names. I've worked for some stars (like Alan Parsons, Pat Metheny, Sting, Lou Reed, dozens) and I've put all the instruments for Symphony Orchestras in their right places. I've done rock productions, pop, electronica, mega opera productions, the most famous musicals, prestigious ballet companies all over the world? Oh boy, mine is bigger. 'Missed your menstrual period?
