Best part of the scene (and the creepiest part of the movie) is that the card actually disappears. The Thing Downstairs is screwing around with the laws of physics to the point that magic actually works.

Very true. Usually ranks out in the middle to lower half of his work. I have it among the top few. Huge fan. If you allow your self to get fully engrossed in the movie (no distractions, large screen, night viewing, etc.), it really gives you that feeling of dread and impending doom throughout. This, of course, is enabled/enhanced by the score, which is understated but enormously effective.

@@03cobra4 Agree. I saw it when I was in college, in the late 80's, with a bunch of friends who were all film majors. They rented the video and created the perfect atmosphere. It scared the you-know-what out of me, but I fell in love with it.

it's a good movie, but definitely has some slow pacing issues, and the ending is both super underwhelming and kinda awesome with the shot of the hand going through the mirror. it has alot of standout moments, but overall its nowhere near as tightly produced as The Thing and Mouth of Madness. still far better than any recent horror movie i've seen.

I like that he points out something that always bugged me about time travel in fiction, is that the earth and the planets are always moving in space and you have to precisely calculate (or "unmove" back/forward in a fixed empty isolated spot in space then fly back) not just where but where IN SPACE you want to be.

Yggdrasil Oh, okay. I didn’t know what you meant. It’s not exactly a huge interest to me, so I probably won’t look into it anytime in the immediate future, but thanks for the reply. Honestly, I’m guessing anything I’d find would basically all be heavily based in complicated math related to physics, shit like trigonometry and calculus, and there’s a reason why I stopped at algebra 2 and geometry in high school, and opted to take practical math courses and statistics courses to fulfill my high school and college required math credits... Point is, no matter what I find, I’m only going to be able to comprehend it “indirectly” or second hand, like basically anyone else who doesn’t understand all that complicated mathematics.. Yuck. 😅

Great scene in a great movie, but 2 scenes, off the top of my head, surpass it. When it first possesses Susan (I think she's the one with the glasses) it's amazing because accompanied by this great soundtrack sequence, with this choir singing backup, and the room is surprisingly well lit. Even in plain sight, the monster is scary. Also the translation scene, where Lisa explains the history behind the capsule - it's chillingly effective for me because it makes clear that the history of evil is actually a story that's still unfolding.

Note he mentions having to calculate the position of the earth in the past. The earth revolves around the sun, the sun around the galactic center, and the galaxy through space. Most time travel movies don't consider that. The time machine often maintains it's relative position to the earth, and yet no one questions if the earth moved.

One of the things they didn't talk about is how to make the particles vibrate at a frequency that the human brain could interpret, and how much power this signal would require, I'd imagine the further back in time this event goes it would require more and more power in order to send the signal simply because of the distance traveled by the earth through space as it travels into the future away from the event. It's way more difficult an equation than they let on of course.

I just assumed that the messages were being transmitted from those same extra-terrestrial humans that Jesus was supposed to have been. Even looking back to when this film was released, no one would have assumed that we could have come up with tachyon transmission technology by 1999, much less the ability to transmit that information to where Earth was in the universe while this was unfolding.

@probablynotmyname85213 жыл бұрын
@@jackburton7483 thats the problem though, you can have fantasy weirdness but you cant then mix in science fantasy because you have a suspension of disbelief problem. Its a common flaw in fantasy movies, the audience can go along with so much but when you start making up science to fit your narrative it can fall apart. A good example of a film getting this mostly right is event horizon, which used fantasy science from the edges of what we know, i.e other dimensions, a ship that has moved outside of our universe. Prince of darkness however shoves in the technobabble at the end to get to an ending they wanted but couldnt justify, it would have been better that the images just magically appeared for no explained reason.
