I think it is a result of marrying with other ethnic groups. There's a video by Nomadic Indian where they interviewed a Chinese Indian family in Makum. The father in that family can speak Mandarin and is married to Ahom woman. And their children retain more Chinese features.

Their paternal grandfather came from China hence they are Chinese. People identify after their father side. Only in few tribes like Garo you take mother's name.

Makum is the former China town of Assam. The Chinese people who came to work in Tea gardens during British rule live there and they have mixed with other Assamese people.
