I was Madame in a high school production of Cinderella. Cinderella is supposed to make this great entrance after the stepsisters try on the shoe and the shoe fits Ella and it’s all great. Our Ella couldn’t get her dress on in time and did not make her great entrance. So I’m talking to Charlotte and in my head I’m thinking “please know where I’m going with this”. Everyone on stage is just mouthing words because it was usually a really quick turn-a-round so everyone jumped when I said to Charlotte, “ Yes I know the shoe didn’t fit, dear. We’ll have to think of something else”. Thank goodness, she knew exactly what I wanted to do and replied, “Maybe we should cut off my toes!” because in the original fairy tale that’s what happens. It was opening night, we had to improv for what felt like two minutes, it was the craziest thing. It all worked out and it was a lot fun. So all’s well that ends well, I guess!

God, that last story had me on the edge of my seat. Shoutout to the crew for pulling through in times of crisis- I remember one time during Lion King my mic pack FLEW (like. NYOOM.) off of me (I was Shenzi ((lead hyena)) in the middle of Be Prepared ((big hyena song)) and I just had to casually run offstage like it was intentional and I just ran STRAIGHT INTO the stage manager and was silently like I HAVE GLOVES ON ATTACH THIS MIC PACK TO MY LEGGINGS but dead silent bc my mic was still on. And she pulled through in literally like seven seconds flat with absolute precision and poise and I ran back onstage like it was scripted!

Shenzi is the leader of the Hyenas, which is what I meant. Bonzai is second-in-command. If you Google it, they're known as "Shenzi's Clan." This is what I was referring to, because the girl who played Bonzai liked to try to say "WE'RE the leaders," when, in fact, that's false. (It wouldn't have mattered at all to me if the girl hadn't constantly tried to one-up me while also being completely wrong about EVERYTHING she tried to "help" me with)

So the show was Wizard of Oz, and our leader of the monkeys was supposed to kind of fake sling Dorothy to where she’s sitting on the ground facing the Wicked Witch (this is after she’s been captured and taken to the Witch’s castle). Dorothy trips on a cord or something while falling and hits the stage way harder than she’s supposed to, making it look like the leader of the monkeys THREW HER VICIOUSLY ACROSS THE STAGE. This was a school musical, so we all look to the back of the audience where our teacher/director is manning the soundboard, and she’s gripping the front of it with white knuckles, looking like she was going to murder the poor kid. In the same show, our Dorothy had a little mishap where she misstepped and fell off of the stage during Somewhere Over the Rainbow. In case you’re wondering, I played Toto.

One time I had this huge flowy dress, and there was this moving set piece that had some trees and fake plants on it and in the middle of this super romantic scene my dress got caught on the tree branch! It would be fine except that set pierce was supposed to MOVE OFF THE STAGE during that scene!!! So I'm like confessing my love to this dude while simultaneously being dragged off the stage. Thankfully my friend was there and managed to unhook me before I was dragged completely off😂😂😂

At my middle school, we did a production of Into the Woods, and we had a mic mishap on opening night. The guy who played Rapunzel's Prince realized his mic wasn't turned on. At ALL. So, after he virtually screams Agony, he runs to our mic girl and mimes the situation. After the mic is fixed, the first thing he says (and does) on mic, for all the audience to hear is "ACHOOOOOO"and immediately fall, giving MAJOR feedback. Right. In. The. Middle. Of. It. Takes. Two. So us backstage are attempting not to laugh while the poor Baker and Baker's Wife try to distract the audience from the clear sneeze. 'Cause what can you do with a clumsy prince with allergies. 👌

Katherine Steele I was in Suessical, playing Gertrude. My costume was basically that I’d rush of stage, and attach feathers to my one little feather, on my dress. My dresser missed the dress and clipped it to the very bottom of my dress. I walked awkwardly on stage, and it apperently was too much wait to handle. So the bottom of my dress *teared*. I was mortified. Thankfully, Mayzie, came on, with some cloth, that she slowly placed on my... ripped dress. I cried backstage....

Directly after the song Time to Play in School of Rock, where I was in the child ensemble, I was in a scene as a teacher. Completely different costumes. Like literally nothing in common, nothing I could keep on. There was less than ten seconds to change. Most of the nights I was fine, but opening night, my dress as a teacher was I guess moved by a stage hand, so, in my tank top, tights, and booty shorts, I had to rush backstage only to find my dress side stage. I hauled it on in the five seconds I had left. I fixed my hair and put on my fake glasses, and walked onstage. Someone in the audience giggled. My dress was on inside out. And it was one of those dresses with a little patch of fabric to hide clevage, so it was really obvious.

This isn't a mishap of mine but still very funny. And, it's kinda long. Here we go. So I am in marching band and we thankfully made State. Unfortunately, state competition was the same night as the day after opening. So my understudy went on and there's a scene where "Jamie" grabs the bag of dismembered body parts (props for later scenes) and runs offstage after "Sal". Well, as my understudy runs offstage, she hits. The giant 6 foot tombstone in the middle of the stage. It falls over, hits the stage loudly, and cracks in half. She freezes and stares into the audience but another cast member (I wasn't there I only watched the video) says "quite a thunderstorm" from backstage and the audience burst into laughter. She runs offstage, gets out of costume, calls me from the dressing room IN TEARS. Let me remind you I just conducted a full marching and was on the way home. (we got tenth in state thanks for asking) I get there in time for the second act only to see another cast member onstage, stuffed into which I later found out was my costume (I'm a size 0 while she's easily a size 8) onstage with a script. I went on the next day and for the rest of the run (it was only a week) and it goes on without a hitch.

My freshman year I had to go up into the catwalks and it was like a 20ft ladder and I was terrified but had to quickly over come that fear and now I go up it like it’s no big deal. Jackie Marie I was in the Pajama Game once, and I had to wear a loose skirt. At one point, during a song, me and one other girl had to run offstage, run up a steep ladder, and bang on a door from up there while singing the hardest part of the song. On one rehearsal, it was really windy, and I started to trip in my skirt, meaning I just barely saved myself from tumbling off the ladder, and in doing so, my skirt flew up. Good thing no one saw.

One time I did this Civil War Reenactment play and I had to wear like this big poofy dress. So my teacher made me do this dance with the professional line dancers or whatever we were doing. Funny thing was, I forgot my hoop skirt at home so I was just wear the pig heavy skirt with really thick material. Underneath, I only had a bathing suit on (don't ask, it was hot outside) the dress kept slipping and eventually, I decided not to care because I had to keep grabbing peoples hands and spinning in circles. By the end of the dance, my dress was between my ankles, some of these people take the accuracy of this event VERY seriously and were NOT happy with me... but me and my friends were in hysterics!!

In our school production of Beauty in the beast, in the very first song Belle is supposed to go and sit on a well. It was made out of paper so to make sure she didn't fell right through we had to put a little stool underneath where she had to sit, and we didn't really had a stage crew so a friend and I got 'assigned' to put the little stool underneath the well before the show. As you can probably guess, in our last show we forgot to put the stool there and Belle fell through the well, she just kept on singing like nothing happened but the whole ensemble (including me) was laughing so hard while singing it was so embarrassing and funny at the same time but I felt so guilty afterwards.

Recently I finished up a production of Willy Wonka Jr at my school where I played Grandma Georgina and an Oompa Loompa. At one of the dress rehearsals the person playing Wonka completely messed up his part in a Chew It. It’s at the part where he is taunting Violet with the gum and he tells her “pea soup roast beef and blueberry ice cream.. blueberry is the nicest ice cream” exCEPT he says strawberry instead of blueberry, and from the video feed backstage I could see all the actors trying so hard not to laugh. We have never let Wonka live this one down

Katherine I have a story! My sister and I saw Rent this past summer and it was FANTASTIC. The only problem (that i noticed) was that Maureen's jeans had completely ripped during La Vie Bohem. It was so cool, though, to see her and two ensemble members gathering and fixing everything while staying in character. And they somehow got it (mostly) fixed before the reprise! This is why I love theatre. Mistakes happen and we always make it work. Love you so much!

I’m a sweaty performer as well. When I had to go into a trap door as TWWOTW from Wizard Of Oz, my dress had places where it could detach and re-attach since the witch is literally everywhere during the show. I had to strip my crinoline, skirt of my dress, and my heels off in 30 seconds. I had people that would help me get the thing back on, but nobody was around to help me get the skirts off, except for our sparkly choreographer... we went from being friends, to really close best friend in about 5 minutes

Gotta love live theatre and wardrobe malfunctions! I was recently in the San Francisco area premiere of Bullets Over Broadway and one of the scenes involved me wearing a giant hot dog costume (look up the song I Want a Hot Dog For My Roll for context), and the costume required us guys to wear no pants underneath, and multiple shows I could feel the suit riding up to the point where I had to position my legs in such a way that it would stay down and not expose my undergarments to the audience. Crisis averted.

My all-time favorite mishap was during my school's production of Sound of Music. I played one of the kids and it was the ending scene in the abbey where the Nazis come looking for us, then they leave. Now what was SUPPOSED to happen was the sound booth would play a car driving away, we act scared, and then we all get up and go up the mountain and everything. But, during one of the shows, instead of the car, they played a doorbell. We try playing it off by continuing with the scene without mentioning it, which worked until all the kids (myself included) started laughing uncontrollably, but silently, for the rest of the scene. But what made it my favorite mishap is the director standing backstage during curtain call, with a completely straight face saying "ding dong, we're here to kidnap you"😂

Storytime: I was in a production of the Lion King Jr last year and i played Rafiki. The whole production was really fun and it was great to perform, but on the night of one of our shows, Zazu completely missed their cue to go onstage. It was during that scene where the hyenas close in on Simba, Nala and Zazu in the elephant graveyard, and Zazu’s kind of important as he tries to convince the hyenas not to eat them and gets a bit beat up by them. So the actors for Simba and Nala completely stepped up and just straight improved for a three or four minute scene, trying to incorporate Zazus lines. I don’t think Zazu was on stage at all for that scene, but i later asked people if they noticed anything different and no one did.

I was Cinderella’s Mother when I did Into the Woods and I had to climb up into my tree and it was so scary 😭 and I remember opening night I was climbing up into the tree and somehow the sleeve of my dress (which was like a mesh netting type of fabric) caught onto the stud of my nose piercing and ripped it out! Just finished binge watching all of your Bedtime Stories videos and they are great! Last year, my schools production had a mishap too. We were doing Typecast (it was a middle school production) and in the scene where all of the characters are arguing because all of the parts were mixed up, the guy playing the gym teacher went a little overboard and pushes my friend, who was playing the slacker, to the ground. It was so hilarious that we were laughing on stage for a few minutes after the audience got over it. She wasn't hurt at all, but as young performers it was a little embarrassing. :)

Oh my god these are hilarious!! These reminded me of my own stage mistakes from a recent production I was in that had me absolutely dying onstage. There was a scene where a girl came to ask about a letter from her fiancé who had recently died, and my character was paranoid that if anyone touched the letters with their hands they would catch the spanish flu and die, we decide to bake in the wood stove to kill the germs. This of course doesn't work and the letter catches on fire, and we had a gag where I was holding an egg timer, which went off just as the fire went out. This timer was the cue for most of our cast to come onstage, so it was important for it to work out. One night, however, the timer literally just fell apart in my hands, and there was nothing I could do to fix it, so I slammed it as hard as I could on the stove to make some kind of noise in place of the old cue, and somehow it worked. I played one of two gossipy, kind of bitchy telephone operators, and all of my scenes centred around fast paced, snappy dialogue, quite often having two separate conversations at the same time, overlapping each other. Needless to say, it took us the entire rehearsal process to nail the delivery and timing. However, about halfway through the run, my scene partner got a concussion and was unable to perform for two days. The show was not double cast, and we didn't have any kind of understudies, so our assistant director stood in for her. This was difficult enough, because he had to pick up the dialogue at the drop of a hat, as well as nail the blocking on basically his first try. The other issue was that the character was incredibly feminine, and the relationship between the two characters was the kind expected of two women, but our assistant director was male. So, the two characters went from "those gossips that run the telephones and sometimes yell at the farmers" to "that weird couple from the telephone office" Needless to say, it was a very interesting two shows.

Tonight is opening night for my school’s production of Into the Woods and watching this brings back all the good times my bests friend and I who played the wolf and Little Red had during practice when we got into shenanigans. First we were at the start of Hello Little girl as I’m skipping away from the wolf and he’s chasing after me. The floor was slick that day, and my best friend ended up sliding and slipping as he tried to cut me off. He slipped and fell so comically it looked like a cartoon banana set up. He got up and we tried continuing the song as our director was dying of laughter. There also was the time today during final dress rehearsal when it was the part after the wolf eats little red, and I was hiding behind the bed with Granny as the baker came in to kill the wolf. Well when my best friend was getting killed, he fell off the bed and onto me which resulted in me yelling “Ow!” really loudly before I scrambled up to deliver my actual line. Classic theater shenanigans.

I look forward to every Thursday when your videos come out. Your personality and passion for all things musical theatre have shaped what I aspire to be as a performer. With your great tips, I auditioned for Into the Woods recently and landed the role of Cinderella. Thank you so much for all that you do for the theatre thursday fam. I appreciate you so much! You have no idea how much you have impacted me.

Katherine I love all of your videos! I'm so sorry about the mishaps... When I was in my school's production of Spelling Bee as Leaf earlier this year, I was falling all over myself in Magic Foot. I don't know why, but everyone just made me look clumsy..they were all better dancers than me. And we had this section at the end of Pandemonium, where we would all go to different parts of the stage, and do a different dance. One night I forgot to move at the right time, got distracted and just stood there. Thankfully, no one seemed to notice, and random space outs are in character for Coney!

I have wayyyy too many mishap stories to tell but on the subject of costume malfunctions... I was in the ensemble of Shrek, This is How a Dream Comes True was happening, everyone was running in place. How her costume was made, it was a top and a skirt basically, but while we were running, her skirt just fell down DURING A SHOW. She played it off well, she kept running and singing, "mad dragon, yay. Skeletons, hooray. Skirt's not staying up, oh my gooood." She had to hold her skirt for the entire scene afterward up until she exited for Who I'd Be. She was so professional about it, I would have cried.

i recently played gertrude in seussical and there was a scene in the act 1 finale where i crossed in front of the nest and at this point i had my huge tail so when I got like halfway across the stage, the tail got stuck on the wheel of the nest so i’m pulling at it and i see the tech crew panicking backstage and i pulled really hard on the tail and it BROKE THE TAIL BROKE ON STAGE and i got off the stage and looked at the stage and there was a huge hunk of feathers on the stage and the crew spent most of intermission trying to get all the feathers out of the wheel

I think one of the worst mishaps in one of my shows (didn't involve me luckily) but when I was a freshman we did the play Arcenic and Old Lace. Well during a scene Mortimer is supposed to be on stage alone doing some kind of lines. And he says something and me and my friend who played Elaine were following along in the book and we were really because he just stops dead in the middle of the page. This is opening night of the show and we hadn't messed up entrances/exits since like first night of tech week. Well he's waiting around on stage and goes to the phone to make one of the mortimer phone lines up. And when nothing happens still he gets up leaves the entire fucking stage and comes at me and my friend. Remember we're 14 and this 18 year old is just screaming and swearing at her about how she needs to get her ass on stage (This boy had done a ton of shit in preceding weeks to make us scared too including straight up leaving the theatre halfway through a dress rehearsal and nearly getting kicked out of the play). We grab his arm and show him the script that says she doesn't come on stage for another 3 pages. And he has to get the aunts on stage and have a conversation with them. Our stage was left empty for a good minute and a half while we worked this out and either we were really lucky and had amazing sound people who immedietely switched his mic off or he did himself or we didn't have mics but luckily only our director heard him yelling and swearing at us. The next night the aunts mortimer and elaine all got together and really went over all their entrance lines and knew to come in if there was dead time between certain lines. It was just terror induced panic the whole way through XD

Everything that went wrong in "Frozen" (I already commented this on another video but 1. I forgot some things and 2. this video seems more relevant). I'll be splitting this into 2 categories, ones that involve me and ones that don't: *Involved me:* 1. So I was a townsperson/summer chorus, and during I think the 1st or 2nd performance (there were 5 total), I was onstage as a townsperson for "Let the Sun Shine On". Everything went great and just as planned. As the audience claps after the song, I go off the side of the stage to go to my dressing room/green room to change into the ballgown I wear for the coronation. But it's super dark. I walk down a set of steps off the stage, but for a second I forget to look down. I tripped and fell into a pile of glitter left there by the snow chorus. And there's a small gap in the wings where you can kinda see the audience just a little. I just hope they didn't see anything. 2. One day, I was changing into my town costume right before the beginning of a show. Everything's going perfect, until I noticed a HUGE hole in the armpit of the blouse I was wearing. The crew moms didn't have time to sew it up, so they just pinned it and when I took it off to change into the ballgown, they sewed it up for me. *Didn't involve me:* 3. For "Let it Go", we did a very similar thing to what Broadway did, and had 2 invisible strings attached to Elsa- one for the glove and one for the cape, so that they look like they're flying off into the wind. During tech, dress, and the 1st performance, everything ran smoothly. But for this performance, the glove successfully flew, but the cape got stuck. 4. Middle Anna's mic would always go out. ALWAYS. There were days where it worked for a couple seconds, but then it would go off again. 5. After "Do You Wanna Build a Snowman?", the parents/stagehands were helping to change the sets to prep for "For the First Time in Forever". But this time, it was taking longer than usual. Turns out, they forgot the door that separated the 2 girls' bedrooms. They rushed on there and fixed it before the next scene started. My mom and I still joke about it to this day. 6. During the 3rd performance (the one that my friends came to see), our stage manager had to interrupt the show right before "Hygge" to let everyone know that there were some technical difficulties. The instrumental wouldn't play off the computer (since we were using a megachurch, there was no orchestra). But as we all know, the show must go on. So Anna, Kristoff, and Olaf broke the 4th wall and improvised a scene about, hypothetically, if this were a fictional story, which one of them would be the main character? I tried so hard not to laugh from the wings. 7. That same show, Elsa's voice was completely worn out from the past night. I could tell she wasn't taking the best care of her voice. So I gave her some throat coat the next day. 8. The 4th show was the one that was filmed. After "Let it Go", right before the lights were about to come up for intermission, Elsa fell of the stage. In the recording, you can hear a lot of disappointed groans, as well as a little girl being very worried about Elsa. 9. Final show. Anna was absolutely KILLING IT the whole time. But apparently, she wasn't feeling well. She continued to give it her all, and her voice wasn't affected a single bit. But come intermission, she knew she couldn't take it anymore. So we had to get her understudy out of the super-glittery snow chorus makeup and get her ready to go on as Anna for act 2. Everything went normal. Sure, these 2 girls look nothing alike, but I just hoped the little kids in the audience wouldn't notice and that the magic would be kept alive. But when BOTH Annas came out for bows, I got a little nervous. If those kids weren't suspicious of it then, they were now.
