for those who dont know: in the time period certain things were rare and expensive and often used as symbols of wealth and power, or for occasions like weddings, prosperity. Fabric was expensive as was embroidery, and so were certain colours of dye. Things like the pattern on your garments, the length of your sleeves, the jewelry you wore, the length of your hair and the colour of your clothing were all denotations of wealth. Red in particular was expensive and flashy and usually reserved for grand things like weddings. However, this is a memorial and meant to be somber. Out of all the times it was inappropriate to dress in a flashy manner, memorials, funerals and offering days to buddha or the dead were really high up the list. it was considered disrespectful to the gods and the dead to dress in this manner for a memorial. In fact even the empress and the concubine who matched her rank are dressed in pale robes with very few accessories out of respect for the occasion. This is another faux pas as one should never be dressed better than the hosts or those present of higher rank. Keep in mind as well in this drama the current emperor has mandated a sensible frugality within the palaces as the country needs to focus on its people not wealth and status.

Plus, in an earlier scene on the same day as this one, Fifth princess was visiting her mother (the concubine) and she was wearing the same red robe and necklace, but different hair ornaments. So she definitely had time to change the robe and remove the necklace but choose not to, probably because she wanted to silently defy the emperor's orders to economize.

Perhaps she had planned to attend another engagement, rather festive and joyous- not approved on a day marked for sober ritual?

@@PattyK-e1u ive seen the drama and no, she didnt have anything else that day. she just didnt want to take the dress off because it was her favourite. but assuming you did get invited to a celebration on a day you had a memorial the polite thing to do is decline the party invite and have a gift sent instead to show your support.
