Great to see the little beast, does sound like the valve clearances need doing as sounding a bit tapping, don’t forget to check and clean the points and maybe replace the condenser. Might be an idea to find an old school mechanic to put a timing light on it to check that too. My 42 year Old Ford Cortina has to have that kind of TLC 🤣

In 1964 when I was a little kid, my mom bought a brand new MG1100 which was essentially the same car as yours. 4 door, even the same color as yours. It was a stick shift, and my mom really enjoyed driving it. The problem was, this was in New Jersey and none of the American mechanics had a clue about how to work on it. Within the first year the poor car was in the shop 3 times for 5-6 weeks each. After a year my mother was fed up and traded it in on a new Ford. It was a shame because the MG was a beautiful car and fun to drive. I wish you good luck with yours.

Love how Billy wiped the dipstick oil on his tee shirt, proper classic mechanics! Also just to endorse good advice from others re oil in the carb piston, re-check engine oil level after a short run up to temperature. A few small metal deposits on the sump plug not a great concern but see what it is like at next oil change - which you need to do more frequently than in a modern car.

Very satisfying servicing an old car. She wasn’t quite running right by the sound of it, nothing major just a little tune up needed. I recommend you check the valve clearances (Tappets), clean the points and check the ignition timing with a strobe, whilst you have the cap off clean the contact the spark is distributed to as they often have a layer of corrosion on. Also I find using a colourtune, made by Gunsons is a good way to check the mixture is correct👍🏼 Great to see young enthusiasts getting their hands mucky🙂

My thoughts exactly, I gave away my 1968 VDP 13000 a few years ago, silly me. I previously rebuilt the engine and manual gearbox, it ran like a dream. The car in the video has a single 1 1/2" SU, so it is likely to be an Automatic. The automatics had that larger oil filter.

I didn't see if the ignition points, condenser, and rotor arm were replaced inside the distributor. I'd get those replaced and set the ignition points gap to the correct setting so the engine runs at its best. Probably a good idea to whip the rocker cover off the top of the engine (the part that has the Princess name plate attached) and adjust the tappet gaps at the same time. The engine sounded like it was 'hunting' and wasn't idling smoothly, though that might have been due to the choke being pulled out.

Great video again and love the enthusiasm! One thing to note with the ap automatic engine and gearbox. The oil level should be checked when the engine is at operating temperature and checked after being stood for one minute after running. This when cold will show a good three quarters of a inch past the maximum mark on the dipstick. So if checking the oil when the engine is cold it should be three quarters of a inch past the maximum mark. As the engine shares the same oil with gearbox this is essential. Good quality 20w50 oil and should be change atleast once a year regardless of mileage. You have a lovely car and look forward to watching more videos.

You should endeavor to get the original rubber boot which covers the top of the distributor. With it placed on the front side of the engine directly inside the front grill, the distributor will get water inside of it in heavy rain or just simply over time. Nice video Matilda, you're lucky to have a willing mechanic in the family - glad he sorted out that dog's breakfast of plugs and HT leads. I agree with other posters it's always a good idea on cars of this age to change out all the distributor bits (cap, points, condenser, rotor arm) so you know they are all good. Also as has been said keep an eagle eye on the *oil level* for the first week or so - because it is shared by the engine, the oil filter and the gearbox, things may not be as straightforward as usual - refer to a manual, preferably the manual that originally would have come with the car. In my best Yorkshire accent: "Magnetic sump plug? Bloody luxury I tell you!" 😂

@DavidUKesb Жыл бұрын
The video didn't show it but I assume Billy set the correct gap on the new spark plugs and checked the gap in the points. Might be worth getting a new set of points and distributor cap as both items are very cheap. Then set the timing by rotating the distributor clockwise until the engine starts pinking going uphill, then back off a fraction anti-clockwise until no pinking is heard going uphill. Finally set the carburettor mixture and check there is enough oil in the carb dashpots.

Those black spark plugs suggest that your carbs are running richer than Bill Gates. SU carbs are simple to adjust, once you get the hang of it, but they' can be a bewildering nightmare if you're a beginner (especially if they're twin SU carbs). As someone else has mentioned, a Gunson colourtune spark plug will help. Or find some old guy who worked on these cars in the 1970s. If you have points in the distributor, you need to close up the gaps on the new spark plugs. Otherwise you may have trouble starting on cold mornings. If you have an electronic ignition in place of points, you still need to check the gap on the spark plugs, but you can increase or decrease the gap to maybe 8mm.
@rosewood1 Жыл бұрын
The Gunson colour tune is excellent. I use this on my Atlantic which has twin SUs. I found that excessive richness was caused in part by the choke not shutting off properly. And modern repro cork gaskets don't compress properly. Better to replace the whole choke assembly with modern seals and parts. You can then adjust properly and they don't leak! But I would run this first and then see if I need to adjust the SU. Sadly allot of people take short cuts.

Changing to electronic ignition is one of the best reliability updates for cars of that era. When you were both changing the oil and plug leads, did you look inside the cap of the carburettor (irs the black cap in the middle of the air filter) there should be a cap full of oil inside, to help it run smoothly, good luck

The downside of these front wheel drive BMC cars was the combined gearbox and engine oil use. But regular oil changes help offset that (I'd recommend every 3000 miles - or maybe every 1500 miles if you don't do a lot of miles). Most of these cars had a paper oil filter element. Good to see that you used a classic 20w/50 oil, also make sure that you use a low detergent 20w/50 oil, Eg. from Comma, Morris' et al. I've not run or been around an automatic A-Series BMC car for a long time, but I'm sure that they still used 20w/50 blend. Don't use modern high detergent oils that are also thinner, they'll cause more harm than good. You'll probably need to check the timing, dwell angle etc and adjust the tappets in time too. All this is second nature to us, even from the ultra modern 1980s😄🤣 My first job was in a motor factors too (the stories I could tell😄😄). Have you got a Haynes manual for it? Thatll help with procedures, specs etc. There might be one on eBay or through the owners club etc? Nothing wrong with Eg a Bosch three prong plug, but all four should be the same and to the correct type. The original spark plugs would have been, from memory, Lucas N9Y's. Make sure that the gap is set using feeler gauges, don't assume they're correctly set from the box/factory. You might want to think about electronic ignition for reliability and easier servicing, also a new coil too (keep the old parts in case you want to put it back to original)😉👍✌️ Also when you get a new air filter, get some oil for the carburettor (use the correct oil NOT 3 in 1 or similar), part of daily driving checks is to lift the carb plunger and check the resistance/thus oil level which acts as a 'damper'. I hope that all helps. Billy seems to know his stuff, what I've mentioned is just the quirks of classic BMC A-Series engined cars😉😊💜👍✌️

Looking at the state of the oil, it might be a head gasket problem. Is there a creamy residue in the oil filler cap ?

Did you change the sealing washer on the oil filter can? Bro-in-law killed an Austin 1300 because an idle garage didn't have one, didn't bother, and the old one disintegrated - depositing the engine oil on the road. End of engine as he didn't realise that "red" is ignition, "orange" is oil pressure!
@matildariverwaldennews Жыл бұрын
I’m sure I saw him do that but I definitely will ask and pass the info on, thanks for that 😊
@ethelmini Жыл бұрын
He numbered the spark plugs from the wrong end. It doesn't really matter, for this, but it could save confusion if you're reading a repair manual. No1 is farthest from the gearbox, or nearest the radiator on cars with an engine driven fan, like yours. The firing order is 1-3-4-2 and the rotor arm (in the distributor) rotates anti-clockwise, so once you've identified where one plug lead goes you can work out the rest. Those automatics like regular oil changes, but avoid oil with additives like ZDDP. It's great for other transverse A Series engines, but automatics have brake bands and clutches in them that work by friction. If you didn't know the engine & gearbox is like a classic Mini's, so if you're looking for information online that'll likely be a better search & there are plenty of specialist Mini spares suppliers for parts - like Minispares.

Since it’s obviously been a while and you have no idea when the last oil change was done it might be a good idea to do another oil and filter change after a thousand miles! Its cheap insurance and next time you can get your hands dirty now you know how! The plugs did look carboned up, too rich!

Drop the sump and clean it out it''s (cheap and easy) because what was on the drain plug will be in the bottom of the sump and will get dragged around the engine with every oil change x
