I'm of two minds on this content. One mind is that this is a smart guy who's walked the walk and he knows what he's talking about. The other mind is that there is always a tendency to oversimplify - that getting promoted or succeeding is just a question of looking at the options in front of you, tallying up the pros and cons, and doing some simple math. Like it's literally so simple that anyone could do it. I think the content is a little of both.

Nobody is watching a 15 minute video and thinking "oh yeah, I'm sure getting promoted from staff to principal is this easy!"

Promotion starts with relationship and by relationship. If your boss does not like you, you will not get the good projects to work on. More importantly, your achievement will be simply ignored by your boss. How to build a good relationship with your boss? It's a million $ question, Steve might have answer. :)

Great video. I work in finance for a company that mirrors a lot of what FANNG does. Yes ur manger is critical. But I would also like to add two other pieces of fundamental truth I’ve uncovered over my decades in the job market. 1. High performance at ur level is necessary but not sufficient for promotion. And 2. U must go above and beyond as stated but if u can find ways to solve ur bosses problems those are the areas I would focus on. Even if it’s not what u think is a priority. Best of luck everyone

If you get higher in the hierarchy then the job profile changes significantly. A good programmer/ technician might not yet be ready for such a position. Thus it doesn't really matter how you perform on your current position because that is not a good indicator of how you would perform on the higher position. That you earn more money doesn't really make things easier because it makes these positions attractive for unprepared and unsuited candidates. Taking the quick route might not help.

Your $500,000 story reminds me of when my speculative stock went above $1 million briefly, and I only sold about 20% (still did ok I suppose). I also own many of the original shares, but they have declined substantially from the peak. This was also during the peak mania in 2020-2021. We all have choices to make. Great video my friend.

What to do if you want to change technologies (eg. going from web dev to embedded dev)? Do you have a video about this topic? Or finding the most fitting subcategory of SE.

This checks out and makes sense. Love the succinct version of this. I’ve ways been curious about negotiation strategies and the words and timing to use for advocating for yourself. I’ve also read that there’s some gender bias in how you ask - and that not all strategies are created equal. I wonder - when do you ask, how often, how long is it acceptable between levels, when you’re at level one or two or etc what is the difference in contribution like and how can you set yourself apart. How can you try to build a better relationship with your manager and win him over, when is it time to move on Great video :) Thank you!!

This isn’t very helpful, both Bob and Carl are subjective to the point where you need them. The way you approach to them in this video is completely driven based on their contribution to your promotion.

Honestly I'm just so disappointed, you put out less content than before you retired. Yes obviously I didn't watch this video and quite honestly not going to judging by the title and the first line, it's pretty clear another course promotion video.

I partially agree with you @fateriddle14 but the thing is, free content is free content. Now that he is self-employed he needs to reach at least the same amount of income as before, with a whole new set of skills and routine to make it work. He was inside big corp for too many years, and now it is understandable he will take probably a year to come back to the same level of free content creation. And even then, the content will be sponsored for sure, and be part of his business plan. So let's just enjoy what will eventually come and appreciate what already was.
