another huge problem with resin printers , and especially large volume ones is the suction on layer change , this one seems not to have the tilting vat feature, maybe they will add it in a future model ... that really speeds up the printing also as the model does not need to be pulled that high off to properly get resin underneath the print ...
@PaulsGarage3 ай бұрын
No tilting vat on this one, you are correct. I think the larger the vat, the more difficult it would be to tilt without spilling. This makes up for it by just being slow lol. Not at all a fast printer. I think that robot took almost 2 days to print, but it looks good. Like I said in the video, I don't care about speed. I'd prefer quality and size. I have tried a tilting vat mars 5 ultra though, that thing is crazy fast.

The X1C has a 256 cubed build capacity. Can you imagine that in an SLA printer? Still, this GK3 Ultra is massive, and still appears to have nice quality prints. Pretty cool. I'm currently stuck in that special limbo where you want to get into 3D printing, but can't decide to go with SLA or FDM. SLA is toxic, it smells, it's messy, requires PPE and hazmat procedures, and a bunch of post-processing just to get to the final product, but the level of detail is INSANE. FDM is cleaner, arguably easier to deal with, a lot less messy and/or smelly (depending on filament, of course), and with the right printer you can still get really nice print quality. Decisions....decisions... I feel like, to go with SLA, I'd almost need an entire room with a special exhaust/ventilation system. With FDM, I feel like it could live almost anywhere and not cause a problem. (Sigh) I'll probable end up going FDM, but that SLA detail calls to me.

FDM printing PLA is where I started, back with a prusa mk2. I'd do it again. It's much easier to get going than resin
@icac613Ай бұрын
Don't think thought that FDM is safe, because it doesn't smell as bad. Treat all the plastic/resin vapours the same - through filter and outta window
@PaulsGarageАй бұрын
People have tested FDM extensively. Basic PLA isn't too bad, the rest i wouldn't want to breathe. Some of them will straight up poison you if there is enough exposure

Wow, big pinter prices are finally coming down a bit! I'm still on my original pre-order Saturn, and it has been great, but it really is an awkward size. It is overkill for Mini's and stuff like I typically print, but not quite large enough for things like costume props and masks. It is somehow too big, and not big enough lol. Still holding out as my saturn keeps chugging along, but I think my next printer will be something this size. Hopefully they will be under $1k by that point... And there will be better cleaning tools by then lol.

Looks good, but for me it comes down to this: will I get nearly two thousand dollars (what with the cure/wash as well) of use out of it in a short enough time period to make the upgrade from a smaller printer worth it?
@PaulsGarage3 ай бұрын
Good way to think about it. If you aren't printing big things, it's probably not worth it. If you do want to print big things, you gotta take the jump. It's awesome

I’ve been thinking of upgrading from my m3 Max, but honestly there isn’t really anything out that justifies the price for right now. I’m glad I got a Bambu printer from a Prusa mk3, but there hasn’t been a similar generation leap like that for resin printers yet. Hopefully there will be

The size thing actually convinced me that I don't need this printer. The Saturn4 Ultra might be too much machine for my needs. I really wanted the user-friendly features of the GK3, but I simply won't be able to rationalize dropping nearly 2 grand on a machine that I can't squeeze the full utility out of.
@PaulsGarage3 ай бұрын
If you like the features but don't want to drop big money on a huge thing, you can get the GK2. It's basically this machine but the size of a Saturn. I've heard good things about the Saturn ultra, too.

is there any vertical distortion on the taller prints? I've heard some resin will 'stretch' off the build plate as it goes
@PaulsGarage3 ай бұрын
With these ones, no, but I have noticed that depends a lot on the resin. Those big models were printed in uniformation biodegradable resins, which in my experience don't stretch or deform much, but are instead kinda brittle. I'd I dropped that robot I would probably end up with confetti. My go-to resin is usually sunlu ABS-like, and that will definitely deform and stretch during printing. It doesn't even need to be a tall print, game dice come out stretched into diamonds.
@CaedenV3 ай бұрын
I use some pretty flexible resin, and I don't think I have ever had an issue where there is dimensional stretch/stability issues as it goes up. That would be a lot more on the resin than the printer, and likely an edge case.
@zacharykarr3 ай бұрын
@@CaedenV Z height accuracy is an issue I've just heard of on resin printers in general and its (one of the things) kept me from them. Was just curious if this is a problem that seems to be exacerbated or not with a pretty huge printer.
@lornablewettandlee5043 ай бұрын
All we need now is an afordable resin.
@PaulsGarage3 ай бұрын
I generally use sunlu ABS-like. Reasonably tough and under $20/kg if you buy big bottles. Not the beat by any stretch but good and cheap
@elvinhaak3 ай бұрын
Actually, not even THAT expensive compared to other 3D-printers... less then 2000 including wash and cure. Even compared to FDM. Replacement-parts and such can be dealbreakers I guess?
@PaulsGarage3 ай бұрын
I'm not sure. The GK2 was designed for easy maintenance, but mine hasn't needed any replacement parts. No idea what the parts cost. On the other hand, I have a bunch of FDM printers and only 1 hasn't broken in some way. Resin printers seem to be more reliable, but other costs really add up (alcohol, nitrile gloves, etc)
@elvinhaak3 ай бұрын
@@PaulsGarage Less things to move so less things to fail, also mostly lower temperatures, lower electric currents and so on. But, displays of this bigger size might be quite costly for example (if screen-protectors and FEP fail or due to long use). That besides the cost for the things like you mention and working-environment-issues that are bigger. For this size of printer, I think it would be quite nice if they would combine printer and curing-station in one so you can transfer the print to cleaning-station and after that inside the printer to cure it instead of to the 3rd big box. Seems to be more logical to combine than cleaning- and curingstation in one. Without the vat, the display can be used to cure + some extra lights on the same big(ger) PSU.
