I previously did a printed label for the back of my quilt- a few washes of the quilt and the label is useless because it faded so badly. I didn't use Retayne, so I have hopes to try that experiment again with better results.

This was very interesting. Thank you. I am from Australia. I am currently hand sewing a large memory quilt for my son, which is already quilted. I have a large photo film reel appliqué consisting of 44 photos. I used Matilda’s own ink jet printable fabric sheets which were very expensive for the amount that I was using. There are 5 sheets in a pack for $25 Aud. I get 2 photos on a sheet, so it was an expensive project. As an inexperienced quilter it was all I knew. The photos are beautiful and, on advice from my local quilting shop, I put on fusible web and quilted it on the front. I am currently in Croatia finishing the quilt and I needed to print the label and one photo, using the same printable fabric. The photos weren’t as nice as the existing photos and it appears that there is a slight pinkish hue. Not bad, but it’s there. I had no choice but to use it as I don’t want to take the quilt back to Melbourne (I’ve already taken 18 months.) I’ve concluded that the ink must be different. With my next two quilts for my other children, I will try your method. Thank you.

One hour to wash is really long time. I bought a commercial grade Maytag washer in HomeDepot and no short cycle wash. I sold it cause I hated it. I bought an analog Speed queen washing machine at a local furniture store it was pricey $1500 but worth every penny the machine is commercial grade very heavy weight. Thanks to 2 delivery men that installed it. I love that machine can do a wash in 15”, 9”. I think use vinegar rinse. Then I hang dry outside on the line here in tropical Puerto Rico. Clothes dry here in breezy March in 45”. In hot summer 20”.

About ten years ago we took my mother into our home to care for her. I had to learn about all her business stuff. When I was doing this I decided I needed a new printer that would print legal size documents so I could copy and share things with my sibs. As I went through this process, I was told that laser printers, print would face after many years. So since the documents I was going to copy and share were in some cases already 60 years old I got the ink jet. I was told it was the same principle as when you find that old sales slip that has been in net printed from the register. Have you hear of tbis? Have the laser printers changed? Just curious. Shopping for another printer and thought I would ask.
@TheQuiltmakerHomestead5 жыл бұрын
hmmmmmmm interesting, I hadn't heard that before. Of course I've only been using my laser printer for about 3 years now.....so far no fading but wonder what will happen in 60 years ????? I do know after research about laser printers is that the toner is actually finely ground polyester which the printer heat sets to the paper/fabric. I don't know if printers have changed from way back when......all good info to look into!!!

Hi Sharon, the download is in pdf form and so I don't think it can be changed. I used a program called Inkscape to design this. It is a vector based software and a free download online. You could design your own custom prints for fabric :)

Hi Lisa, I too enjoy watching your videos. Your explanations are “spot on”. Before watching this video, I watched your video using the June Taylor fabric/paper. Do you get better results with this method as opposed to the June Taylor? (I have an inkjet printer.) Thank you. Judy from GA

In this video I used my color laser printer. It works really great, but you can't use the June Taylor sheets with it. If you want to use those, you'll need an inkjet printer. When I used them in that video I used my hubby's printer....and those sheets I'd say are the best thing I've found to use if using the inkjet :)

I wonder if you really think the label paper is actually faster. I have only used the freezer paper with mono printer and I am able to remove fabric directly off of freezer paper without any issues and all at once, no stickiness. No I haven't washed my samples yet, so I'll have to try washing. Should we use the Retayne on our mono printing? Also trying to decide if I want to purchase a real heat press for about the same price as Cricut press. How do you like cricut ?
@TheQuiltmakerHomestead5 жыл бұрын
I really do like the freezer paper and had I not tried the labels I'd still be using it :) One thing about the freezer paper, is that I would press and press to get all the "air bubbles" out and for the fabric to lay flat and then when I print each time I'd hold my breath and hope that it didn't jam in my printer hahahaa. MOST of the time it didn't but every so often...JAM. One thing I found after making this video is that if I let the fabric and label cool off it actually peeled easier.....so heating it back up just caused it to stick more.....if using the prewashed fabric in my case lol. So many variables!! My monoprinter doesn't require the Retayne. Interesting though I have a friend who has same exact printer and her toner washes out.....so it could be where the cartridges are made. Again, variables lol. One of the reasons I always say each person will need to do their own testing because it's all so different. I'll tell you, I wanted the bigger Cricut but when I went to get it, they only had the 6x7...I settled. I still want a bigger one HOWEVER....I love that it heats up so quick...and is easily moved around and not heavy. I'd like to get a regular heat press but do I want it out all the time??? What designated space do I want to give to it??? I can't say that I won't get a regular heat press however I want to justify the space and do I do enough stuff with it to do that??? hmmmm lol
