I was prior service Marine. My break was 2 years. I was infantry. I didn’t have to go to basic training. Got sent to Fort Leonard Wood to get shots, initial issue of uniforms and orders to go to Hawaii. Was there for 2 weeks. Ended up doing a total of 25 years. 🇺🇸

Your prior service you earned your right. You did the time, you should have been treated differently. We had a prior service navy guy and He got treated decently, allot of other privates were mad but he did 8 years in the navy and deployed so yeah he gets the right to use his phone and go on pass it’s only fair. Prior service earned their stripes. Much respect to prior service going army 💪

The regulation you are referencing is TRADOC 350-6, Chapter 4-13, p. 66 I have reclassed a couple of times, and especially since I am a NCO, certain privileges of both rank and status (being a reclass Soldier) applied in how I was treated. At Fort Jackson, there is a separate company just for reclass Soldiers. As you said, different commanders will interpret the 350-6 reg as they see fit, but the reg is pretty explicit.

My brother went back into the army at Fort Benning and when it was time for graduation he had all of his medals. He had more medals than the drill sergeants. When they wore their ACUs on family day he slapped on his combat patch and they told him to take it off but he didn’t. When he went to AIT he said everything was much better. As much as I love the army and retired I’m too old to get back in.

So I went back in the Guard after a 22 year break at the age of 57. I was a prior service Captain, but enlisted as an E-5. I wound up in two different companies because of the COVID shuffle, and the treatment was different even within two different companies in the same battalion. In each company I spent one day in general population, but then got separated into my own living area with NCOs from the other company. We got our phones and were allowed to go around Jackson on the weekends. Other than that, we did pretty much everything else that the privates did. In my company, the E4 and below prior service got no privileges at all until the last 2 weeks. The other company let their E4 and below prior service have an on-post pass on the weekends, but they had to live in general population. It really does boil down to the company commander.

I was a kid and wanted to use the army to get what I wanted, I didn’t want to be used. Now that Im a decade older than when I first went in, I have good reasons to serve. I went to Coast Guard boot camp on 10 January 89 from the Army (10 June 84 to 88. Because my MOS didn't cross over / cross deck it was back to E3 for me! Our Senior Company Commander was a Senior Chief (E8). This Senior Chief was really cool with us. He said he wanted us to not take on the Recruit Leadership positions in our companies, but he'd rather have us take on a support role within our companies. In my company we had 2 PS guys. I became the company runner and loved it (lots of runs to the Exchange for our CC and ACC) because I was able to hook up my fellow recruit! I don't know what happened with the Companies before us, but we didn't get the privilege of a prior service boot camp experience! Needless to say it was an experience, helping my shipmates become A J Squared Coasties! Cape May, New Jersey was amazing... I want to say thank you for your service! I served 13½ years and am now 90% SC! Take care of yourself and document everything concerning your health!

I went to basic at Leonard Wood in 1993. We had 2 prior service, 1 being an ADA guy, the other being a former 11B Ranger that jumped into Grenada. He wore his CIB, jump wings with mustard stain and combat scroll. They were both treated the same, but, after 1700, we could hear both dudes in the DS office, closed door, laughing and bull shitting. One DS that was tabbed, loved fucking with the prior service Ranger, it was a special relationship. Later, after I was a reservist for a few years, I went active duty, had to be in repo at Benning, waiting for jump school, was in a prior service platoon, did anything we wanted to.

When I went through BCT ( I went through in 2020) we had at least 2 prior service per plt. My company did nothing different for them. It was mixed with some NCOs and others that were E-4 but they had nothing different from everyone else. They honestly had more work cut out for them because the DS would make them help with supply needs. In other companies I heard they were separated from their plt and formed up behind them, had their own bay, and had crazy chill phone privileges. Seems to be cycle and company based honestly like you mentioned in the video

I was in basic training just as Vietnam was winding down. Our Training Instructor (USAF) was just notified he wasn't selected for reenlistment after 8 years of active duty. I'm certain he was irritated, but what I saw was someone quitting. He left us alone for days at a time. When I saw him, he didn't even look or talk to us. Other TI's didn't chip in to help. We followed the posted-training schedule and figured things out on our own. With hardly nobody watching, I liked skipping breakfast to get an extra hour sleep in the morning. Later, another TI went away for the weekend to get married. He never returned and got listed as AWOL. I learned early we weren't a perfect organization. Later, there was a RIFT (Reduction In Forces) and thousands were kicked out with the standard Honorable Discharge.

6 years of what? 6 years in the Marine Corps? 6 years since your EAS? 6 years since your EOS? Because if you’re saying it’s been 6 years since your EAS you’re still within the 3 years to be waived from going to BCT. They start counting the years from when you finished your obligation in the IRR. I have to go to BCT. My EOS was back in 2015. Read TRADOC 350-6 4-15 b. (1) (1) Prior service personnel entering the Active Army are not required to attend BCT if they completed Army or U.S. Marine Corps basic training, or completed training for U.S. Air Force or U.S. Navy Special Operations Forces, or U.S. Air Force Security Police, **AND** have less than a 3-year break in service.

@@TheJediKnight89 I think a change came out shortly after that order. 2 months after that came out, Army Directive 2019-31 establishes “PS personnel excepted in paragraph 5 and with less than a 5-year break in service who have completed Army BCT, Marine Corps Basic Training, Air Force or Navy Special Operations Forces training, or Air Force Security Forces training are exempt from attending PS-AIC, BCT, or OSUT. However, if these PS personnel have more than a 5-year break in service, they will be required to attend a Prior Service Refresher Course (PSRC) as established by the Commander, Training and Doctrine Command. So back when basic was hard, 1989, when DS's could actually smoke you, and a ate-up private might go missing for an hour and found by the platoon crying on the ground from some wall to wall counseling by (presumably) a DS, and a few of the DS's and instructors had actually been to Vietnam, well there was a Navy E5 who had crossed over. They put him with us as just one of us. He was our PG. He was sharp, always the first up, the last to go type. Strong, disciplined, our role model. No additional privileges, he bunked with us. But for the duration of training he had to be an E4. He thought the treatment sucked, but was happy to go through it. Now, I rejoined the AF in 2002. Didn't have to do Basic. I just had to show up at the duty station, and they gave me my initial issue and squared me away, then sent to my unit. Vastly different experience..

Kind of a funny story was at reclass in Maryland for 91E machinist training with the National Guard training unit at Aberdeen. Informal reclass we was there to train 6 weeks and go. Small platoon size. I was just a E5 top enlisted in the class was a a E7. So of course we ran as a platoon accountability and all. We was on lunch break headed for chow . All dif unit patches and 90% of us dep patches and CABs. Enter Di went to give one of my Specs shit going into chow not being in the boot line . Of course I blow on him . He was pissed my speck did not call him drill and was using the reg duty chow line as we was instructed. I was real quick to remind him it was a title not a rank and to take his slick sleeve poge ass back to his trainees to mind his own dam business. I hear a loud ahem turn my SFC said SGT take your guys to chow I got this. Found out later poor DI got reamed 7 ways from Sunday by his First shirt over that. So just be aware there are dick heads everywhere hope you stay clear of them.

What about prior serving National Guard now wanting to go active army. Do I lose my rank? Does the age 35 limit still pertain to me? I’m not concerned about the special treatment during basic.
