Recipe for Prips Flux:
About 1 cup boiling water
30 grams Boric acid
20 grams Borax
20 grams TSP (tri-sodium phosphate)
The important thing is the 3:2:2 ratio of the WEIGHTS of the 3 chemicals. You can use more water, if needed to keep everything dissolved.

when I first tried silver soldering I failed. Tried over and over again but the solder just would not flow or it would get so hot it evaporated away. I thought the gods of soldering had conspired against me so quit trying for like 2 years. Then I watched a video on it and the guy was using borax for flux. I dashed to Walmart and got some, fired up the torch and it worked immediately. Turns out the flux I had was for electronics soldering. I believe in science again!

Hi! I am trying to get my flux dissolved and it is not cooperating. It is staying pretty white. Any ideas what I am doing wrong? Should I heat it some more as it cools down? Help!

Which flux are you making? It's totally normal for the boric acid and alcohol flux to be milky when stirred and for the solids to settle out. You often have to add more alcohol and definitely have to stir it before using. The solids in the Prips Flux should dissolve completely, and that flux will be sort of a yellow-green color once it's dissolved.

I am making the Pripps flux. It is only 50% clear liquid and 50% solid white granules.

@@lenastiward8657 Check your measurements and make sure you've got the right ratios by WEIGHT not volume, and then try adding a bit more water and boiling it a little longer until everything is completely dissolved before you let it cool down. The Prips should stay almost entirely dissolved even when it's cold.

I weighed my ingredients very carefully on my diet scale. Added the cup of water by measuring cup. I have it in a jar in a pot of water simmering now. Keeping fingers crossed! Yours seemed to dissolve almost instantly. BTW They will be outlawing tsp soon in CA so it was very hard to find.

@@lenastiward8657 How did it go?! If it's too saturated and won't dissolve, you can always add more water. Thanks for the heads up on the TSP procurement issues in CA. Luckily, one bag of that should last you for many years :).
