@murdoch1818 it is an automated system. The bus is not on a track either. It is on a battery charge and drives freely, but by the push of a button in the automation station backstage. It's a really awesome system they have in this show! And I have been on the stage and seen this too, so I'm not making any of this up!

I've seen the West End version. It's absolutely brilliant.

@Greasepaint83 yeah there would be a guy operating the inside mechanisms of the bus but from what I can see it looks like it is not driven by him manually. It just looks like that the bus is on tracks rather than the Australian and UK way of the revolve. It looks more like how the Poppins Doll House is automated.

@murdoch1818 There are wheels underneath the bus that allow it to revolve and move freely around the stage. For a good half of the show, benji is actually ON the bus. Hiding, of course. And 30,000 LED lights on that sucker. This was an expensive show. An by "the push of a button" I meant it's almost like a GO button on any operating board, but it has to be pushed when a cue is reached... So it doesn't jump from cue to cue hitting actors and stuff lol. I am obsessed with this show...

If you are talking about the Australian version you'd be correct. But the broadway transfer used different technology, the bus could move forwards and back, but was too heavy to rotate sideways as in the original production. That is why there is a revolve built onto the stage deck, it is what turns the bus. And Benji is not on the bus for half the show, theres an opening in the flys (which is hidden by the bus) to allow actors to sneak on and off the bus between scenes.

Does anyone know about the automation in this show? Originally in Australia the bus they used was operated by a mechanist inside the rear boot of the bus. The mechanism was a 360 degree swivel pod that could allow the bus to drive anywhere on stage. This though was a bit dangerous because it wasn't always in the exact position and had many problems in technical rehearsals. It seems on broadway the bus is just a huge truck on a centre track that goes US and DS and can swivel 360 degrees?

Yes, for Broadway they repurposed a real bus (which was too heavy to have its own turning mechanism) and instead relied on a revolve built into the stage deck. This however was technically difficult to maintain and also expensive to transport. The newer productions have returned to the original swivel mechanism, but they have removed the US wall of the bus (instead of it swinging open) and they have removed the 3 hydraulic lifts behind the bead curtain, with the main access to the roof being via a ladder on the back of the bus. The shoe also doesn't fly over the audience or move along the bus anymore. It remains fixed on top.

MATERIAL GIRL PLEASE!!!!

I'm not doubting you but that sounds very dangerous. In Australia no automation is operated wirelessly hence why there was a mech in the bus who drove it. If its hardwired then of course it is operated from Automation control. I've worked on How To Train Your Dragon and every mobile dragon has a mech inside who drives. And also Benji is not on the bus half the show. Cast can enter either side on the bus and get onto stage through a whole in the "blackout curtain" between legs 3 and the "cyc".
