I think it's better to get a real world review by known sailors then a two sentence statement by an unknown source. Great work.

Just fabulous! I am ordering my Sigma drive as soon as i can! I really think you did an excellent product review, and qualified endorsement. It was so sincere, objective, and well presented, that it really reached both hemispheres of my brain, quickly satisfied my initial skepticism, and moved me to absorb the story of the Sigma Drive. What a great journey. Thanks, John.

Good points about the hull flexing. A more flexible coupling seems the logical progression to improving the drive systems overall performance. I don't have a boat yet, but you have convinced me of its merits. Excellent breakdown of the topic!

Had a 1974 HC 34 the forerunner to your 33. It was powered by a Yanmar 35. Shaft alignment, engine mounts and Cutlass bearing problems were a constant problem. Sure wish I had something like this back in the 80's and 90's when I owned her. Still was a great boat.

Thanks for the Sigma Drive review. I'm retired and very new to sailing but learning a lot from folks like you as I prepare to purchase my first boat. Always interesting in which products work well and are worth the investment!!! I don't mind if you get paid or sponsored, since you're already "on the water and living the dream" shows that you're smarter, more talented and persistent than those of us still stuck on land...

I have 25 hours on my new V2206 Kubota (same as Beta 50) and ZF25A hydraulic gear with R&D with bolt on coupling new shaft and new 19/11 RH prop all aligned to 2 thou. I was not aware of the Beta drive. It will be going in nest time I haul, thanks for sharing AND see you out there soon.

I purchased and installed the SD55 on my CSY 44 with a Perkins 4236 (85hp) based largely on this review and in speaking to Rod, the US rep. I have roughly 3 hours of testing on the unit running at all RPMs and can say that everything is accurate about the Prism review. I've reduced noise and vibration considerably but the best thing to me is knowing that there is proper alignment, even as the hull flexes, motor mounts compress, and such. I'd buy it again in a heartbeat! #nomorefeelerguage! Thanks for the review!

Great review on the drive. I have not used the Segma but as a service engineer I can tell you that CV drives of all types should NOT be installed as straight as possible, the little balls need to move in the slots for proper operation and lubrication purposes, if the rollers don't roll in the slots it eventually pushes the grease out and then you get premature wear so maybe check with the manufacturer. usually a 1* is called for but as i said i have not used this coupler nor have i seen it just my experience over the last 40 years as a grease monkey. I been waiting for more reviews, your last for the anchor swivel was awesome and i know have one installed on my boat so thank you for that.
@SailingVesselPrism7 жыл бұрын
I know you are correct for all other CV drives on the market, but the instructions so clearly state to get the initial alignment as close as possible. Other drives like the aqua drive require it to be a certain amount out of alignment like you mentioned. Im sure the guys at bruntons could give you a more technical explanation.

I'm sure you read the directions and you know what you doing so i have no issue with your install, if that the way they designed it who are we to try and re-engineer it.

Thanks for the review. We have a Yanmar 2GM in our little wooden motorsailer, that bounces around too much on it's too-soft mounts. I'm curious, if space wasn't an issue, say if you were building a new boat, would you use the Sigma drive system or the Aqua drive?
@SailingVesselPrism2 ай бұрын
I think the Aqua Drive is superior as no form of alignment is needed, in fact it must be a certain amount out of alignment. The Sigma still wants to be in as fairly aligned. But if space is an issue nothing beats the sigma drive.
@offplanetevent7 жыл бұрын
Great for alignment, but it still places the drive pressures on the engine and trans mounts.
@SailingVesselPrism7 жыл бұрын
well of course it does, but even pressure....thats the key!

Good review. Actually $500 is not too bad for what it is and what it does. I also swapped a Yanmar (30 years old) out for a new Beta last year - so much better. I have the stock Beta coupling, but will give this some serious thought.
@SailingVesselPrism7 жыл бұрын
Gotta love the beta! Depending on how easy the alignment is on you configuration really either sells you on it or not. Cheers!
@sailingcruiser257 жыл бұрын
Jon. I'm looking into this coupler for our boat and I'd like your thoughts on one question. Where this unit uses a clamping mechanism to attach to the prop shaft, what are your thoughts on backing down hard in reverse while setting the anchor? We usually go to about 2000RPM and my concern is the shaft can eventually slide out of the coupler. Thanks for my addition information you can provide.
@SailingVesselPrism7 жыл бұрын
I had a similar worry. I asked Bruntons and they said that as long as you don't don't add a lubricant on the prop shaft where the coupling attaches to, it will not move. We have backed down hard on our anchor now many times and the shaft has not budged. This is also with a festering prop so we are getting a lot of thrust in reverse.
@sailingcruiser257 жыл бұрын
I ordered the Sigma drive, but had another thought about the alignment. The alignment still needs to be pretty spot on the vertical plane and as the mounts settle or ware the unit will be loading on that vertical axis. Thoughts. I'll email Rod and ask him the same thing.

Cool product and review. So what was the solution to your clearance issue with the feathering prop in the aperture?
@SailingVesselPrism7 жыл бұрын
just had to tighten down a few different times, the auto prop requires a lot more clearance than our kiwi pro, luckily the sigma drive allows for this movement where the old coupling didn't due to its set screw.
@trevormackenzie25257 жыл бұрын
Sailing Vessel Prism. Ah ha, so without the set screw the shaft can slide forward or aft.

They installed the Sigma drive this summer soon after we took delivery of ours. I was immediately impressed by the build quality and my mom need to either have the engine re aligned for final alignment which in her boat retire the starter and changer to be removed. The labor alone was going to cost more than the sigma drive so it is a no brainer for her. My little brother installed it using the brunton's 6-4'' adapter for the SD 55. She bought hers through kingpropultion

I wonder why not to use a transmission drive shaft coupling like automobiles have?
@JoelWelter7 жыл бұрын
I wonder that, too. Maybe it has something to do with the prop shaft not being locked into a fixed distance like it is on a car.
@SailingVesselPrism7 жыл бұрын
I believed that is more or less how the aqua drive and python drive are designed, but they require a bulkhead for the thrust bearing. If you want to know more about the engineering, I would implore you to talk to the kind folks at Bruntons propellers.

Thanks, it will be instructive.

I want 10, still think about buying a boat, just in case I need them. Diego & Amparo.
@mshaw290808mi7 жыл бұрын
On the average front wheel drive car there are four CV joints. Each joint is bathed in grease and sealed to the environment with a high tech polymer boot. Automotive CV joints last 100,000's of thousands of miles and are exposed to extreme temperatures, environments and power variations. They cost about 50 dollars new! Why didn't Brunton adapt an automotive CV joint for marine use? An automotive joint properly modified for a boat would easily out last and out perform their sigma drive by a factor of 10. And maintenance would be zero.
@SailingVesselPrism7 жыл бұрын
I always thought the same thing, and did a lot of research on how to fabricate something myself. I did find a few forerunners who did it, but the size of the units are massive, and by the end of it all they had almost the same amount of money invested and much more time. Now if you own a machine shop that may not be the case but for the rest of us it is.. Contact bruntons, if this is for a sailboat configuration i think the drive will last just as ling as the engine it is bolted to. Don't quote me on that but thats kinda how they explained it to me for sailboat applications.
@marcrodriguez28843 жыл бұрын
CV Joints on cars are not thrust bearings as well, right? Maybe that's also a part of the equation?
