I worked helping criminals rehabilitate themselves for nearly half-a-century. The theory that some of these staff are going by is "break the inmate down, have them be cowed." As if a cowed inmate is somehow "rehabilitated." They aren't and this approach doesn't help. Exactly what is the inmate supposed to learn when they are messed with, arbitrarily by the staff? You want Corrections staff to help correct bad behavior, reward good behavior. You want consistency, fairness, even-handedness. Finally.....you can't call someone who comes out of a ten-year-stay still functionally illiterate "rehabilitated." That's insane. We can and should do better.

I served 36 months in an Ohio prison for assault with a deadly weapon in the early 2000s. Did my time and never went back. I pistol whipped my ex wife’s boyfriend for putting a hand shaped bruise on my 2 year old son’s face. So for everyone saying “just don’t do anything to get sent to prison”, sometimes good people are put in extraordinary circumstances in life. Could I have handled the situation better??? Probably, but I couldn’t be told that in the moment

If your connected to any type of Disruptive Group (not a validated STG inmate), and your in the FBI-BOP, you can EXPECT to be at least 500 miles from your home town! If your NOT connected, but you have "interesting" tattoos, then they will CONNECT you, and put you on the bus. The bus ride may last upwards of a year before you settle in at a particular facility.
