@@wild7279 the writers were not going for reality here though, they didn't want to give her an explosive exit as they believed they'd get her back in time, they didn't. Plus I feel it was a shot at her as she admitted herself in recent years there was bad relations between her and the management by the end [which was a big part of why she left] so they gave her a low key exit to try and diminish her confidence and undermine her power in the show. @@shanefolan Val had wanted Bea to kill The Freak in her final episode but that was never going to happen. They also did not want to kill the character of Bea off either as they felt Val would eventually return...they tried three times to get her to come back and of course failed. So we were left with the frankly unrealistic ending off a dangerous three time murderess being transferred to a lower security prison! In reality Bea WOULD have killed Ferguson.

Dane B No she never. She actually wanted her exit to be her murdering The Freak and being shipped out elsewhere, but the producers could not afford to lose both her and Maggie Kirkpatrick (and Sheila Florance had also resigned by this point). They asked Val to return three times and she refused twice and the third time priced herself out of the running deliberately. This is when they decided to kill Bea off to stop the speculation about her returning.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYC1laOMiKefo5I Lehman explain here exactly why she left and what happened and it is clear she was bitter with the bosses of the show which is ironic as she still speaks fondly of her time there and still attends alot of the fan parties etc. I think it is clear looking back that the bosses made a mistake by not giving into her demands as had they paid her they might have saved the show as it went into decline after her departure, although at the same time I think Lehman was foolish not to take the big pay day and cash in as her career too went into decline after leaving the show and she never found that level of fame again. Strike when the iron is hot as they say especially in fickle showbiz as the gravy train only comes once too often for too many...

The director missed a trick, though. He should have cut to Bea's face when Ferguson made it clear that not only did she want Bea to attack her, she also wanted her to draw blood. I`m an originals fan so I am biased. This was an incredibly piss weak ending for the shows main character. After 400 episodes there weren't many storylines left she could cover believably so I have no issue with the timing and maybe it was done this way to leave the door open for a return later down the line? That said she could easily have thrashed Ferguson within an inch of her life, escaped, or maybe given Sonia a permanent shower scrub. Anything really but the couple of gentle slaps Ferguson got, wasn't anywhere near enough. There are other characters to come and they have their qualities, but for me Bea laid the foundations for this show. I got hooked on her rivalries with vinegar tits, Erica, Frankie Doyle, friendships with Doreen, Mum Brooks and Lizzie, and generally keeping the order. Val Lehman played her character exceptionally well and I thank her and the show for giving me some great teenage memories.

Prior to this (Beatrice Alice Smith's) poor exit from Wentworth, she was on work release and even considered for parole. So why not leave it as she did well on work release, was released on parole and ended up driving off into the sunset with Tony Maguire (that guy from the PASSIVE team). And as they drove into the sunset together that they did a much deserving slideshow of Bea's time there with the "exit" music. Regardless to what anyone says or knows of Val's exit from the show, her exit was a disgrace to not only the character "Bea Smith" but to Val Lehmann as well.

Joan's demand to have Bea transferred was based on her claim that Smith was dangerous and that she was afraid of what she was going to do to her. Didn't the fact that she collected her from solitary alone and unprotected make a mockery of that claim?

Thank you PrisonerCellBlockH95 for putting this episode in HD. I have noticed that Sheila has been hiding her right arm. Did she break it in real life and had a cast then? Guess what Jude, your bum will go back to prison now. This bullying is getting worse with Bea. I guess the writers done it on purpose. I read somewhere that they gave Val a party after her last scenes. I believe she was just tired after five years on here. What happened to her after Prisoner? Did she go on any other programs? or just be a stay at home mum? I know she also had a young son, along with Cassie and the other daughter. Betty Bobbit's oldest son Chris had a bit of a crush on Cassie. Or so I heard.

A disappointing ending for Bea. As others have said, her being transferred to Barnhurst makes no sense. I would have liked to see her escape again and have stayed out. Other than that it would have made more sense to have had her transferred to D Block like Fay and others. If they had written it that way, they could have maybe coaxed Val back at the end of the series and had Bea return to H Block in time to gloat over The Freak's downfall. Since I wrote this post, I read that Val had problems with the producers of the show and that they intentionally gave Bea the lackluster exit because of that. That sucks on their part because Val gave so much to the show, and Bea deserved a better end story.

Probably because its Prisoner and a triumphant ending would be like watching a different show though I feel they should have killed Bea off for good in a final fight with Ferguson. The Freak...well the producers should have let Bea either kill her or Reynolds not buying The Freaks allegations and all the crap she has done finally coming out of the woodwork and the Freak being put in Wentworth as a prisoner and someone other than Bea making the Freak meet her permanent end. I know this is fiction, but it is not believable that the Governor or Corrections Department executives not figuring out all the stuff that The Freak was involved in. And with enough prisoners making claims from time to time, someone should have put two and two together and figured out The Freak was more crooked then some of the crims in Wentworth. Judy sealed her fate by saying to the doctor: "But Hazel didn't have heart trouble. Will they accept that?" Is Reynolds even familiar with Bea's file??

Reynolds was a pathetic governor Davidson would not have been led a dance by the freak she would have seized the opportunity to trip the Freak up on her own devious schemes. I think Reynolds respected the Freaks experience and and was keener to get back into bed with Wally then challenge the Freak. Davidson was a better governor and from experience would have known what a destabilising effect Smiths transfer would have had on the Prison even Vinger Tits recognised Bea was good for keeping a certain amount of order amongst the women when she sent her straight back to the cell block to sort out Frankie after her second conviction. Reynolds was like a social worker who wandered into the governors chair when nobody was looking.

I am thinking that both actresses got on the wrong side of management to be written out like that perhaps-with Bea though i think either they thought she'd be back or they were sending a message that 'nobody is bigger than the show' which they were very wrong with- the show couldn't work without her. Eitherway it was clear there was sour grapes in her departure and they didn't realise how foolish it was to let her go so easily. @@stevenmcghee6649 I have a method to my madness. I skip the recaps & the credits, which cut about 5 minutes from each episode. And with insomnia, I can't get through approximately 18-20 episodes a day. So, I've actually passed #30. I'm at #33. Now, this message is deceiving, as it was actually posted on or close to new years. So, there's almost 24 months between then & now. And, I can get through the series in under 3 months & even take a couple weeks break between each run. It's a little something you may have heard of, called "INSANITY"! One day, decades from now, people will see this and think, "WHAT THE HELL WAS WRONG WITH THIS JACKASS?". And I will become known as the man who wasted his life watching a bunch of old Aussie tarts beating the hell out of each other over and over again. And maybe even erect a statue of me to mount on Ayers Rock. But, nobody will see it, because they will all be living on Mars, eating dead people crackers like in "Soylent Green". As I said earlier, I don't have a life, and I'm a tad bit bonkers. Happy Testicular Cancer day!

@@stevenmcghee6649 Since I posted this 2 years ago, I have made it through #34. When I do a run, I don't watch anything else. I average about 17/18 episodes a day by skipping beginning recap & the closing credits. As for favorite characters, I adore little old Edith who passed away while bunking with Lizzie. Dearly love Sid Humphreys, a true gentleman and a sweetheart. And, I honestly grew to love Major Ferguson. There's just something special about him, in spite of Joan. Finally, Merle Jones. I hate how Kath just uses her. I think Roseanne Hull-Brown gave her all playing such an exhausting & complicated character as Merle. Merle is the kind of friend I would love to have because of her kindness & childlike innocence. I love the moment when they're all in the rec room & Lexi let's Merle feel her baby kicking. It's such a rare sweet moment. Anyhoo, sorry for the novel. Happy watching.

Bea’s arc really had run its course by this point. It’s just more of the boring Top Dog conflicts. But the producers should have had her walk off into the sunset after Sydney or been let out to live her best life with Tony after the Lassa Fever business. Shipping her off to Barnhurst makes no sense. Judy “can’t go back to Wentworth” but keeps doing and saying things that would send her right back there. It’s a miracle she stayed out as long as she did this last go-round. Bless Sheila Florance - that final scene between Lizzie & Bea is devastating. She really did her thing as an actress. Here we go to Prisoner After Bea - and The Freak’s eventual downfall.

See my comment above on the dramatic reasons for Bea's departure in just this way. It's no small condemnation of the Freak & her technical only power over Bea. Sonia's becoming new Top Dog is about as credible, not to mention desirable, as Humpty Dumpty staying up on that wall, imo.

As the Freak staggers away, bruised but finally victorious, it's a brilliant piece of acting from Maggie Fitzpatrick. Her whole demeanour changes to something quite grotesque. Like something diseased. She exhibited that quality once before - when she thought that Zara Moonbeam had finally driven her nemesis mad. Her whole body hunched and her face took on a manic quality. Portraying someone truly deranged can't be easy. She would have the lines she's required to speak - but how to do so without crossing into the realm of ridicule? A tough ask but she coped admirably.

Val was offered another acting role she liked, she gave them seven weeks notice. It was a lame exit transferring her to Barnhaust. Her reason for leaving was also because she felt there was nothing more she could do with the character of Bea Smith, she did alot. With Judy going back to Wentworth, prehaps they should had finally paroled Bea and let her go and stay at the house, eventually running it for Judy. Maybe Val would had stayed on abit longer being released and trying make it on the outside after all those years institutionalised. But the half way house storylines really started to fustrate viewers and wasn't very popular. I think they should had killed Bea of in a heroic fashion. But they weren't brave enough and thought she would want to come back someday. Val did struggle getting ling term roles after Prisoner. She was to recognised for playing Bea Smith. It was a blessing and well as a curse.
