Prisoners escape in mass jail break in Democratic Republic of Congo

Thousands of prisoners in the eastern Democratic Republic Congo (DRC) city of Goma escaped in a mass jail break on Monday as Rwanda-backed rebels said they had captured the strategic city.
Fleeing prisoners streamed from the torched jail into the surrounding streets in the early hours of the morning, while artillery fire shook the gold mining hub.
The UN said the rebel advance was causing “mass panic” among Goma’s two million residents.
