I think I know what they were doing wrong. Like Stewie said, Brian had no self-control. They keep giving their “more recent selves” the freedom to fix everything. But compared to their “older selves”, which are much wiser about it, they were too naive to making the minor changes. So what they did in the end to fix the problem is by doing it themselves instead of letting their younger version do it.
