Prius-3rd gen 2010-2015 Check Engine and Check Hybrid System reset

Wanted to make a short and sweet video on two things that happened to my 2010 Toyota Prius on a once a month timeframe. I’m not saying this is a fix to everyone else’s previous issues. This is simply what I do, to reset the codes and have the car drive normal temporarily. I’ve seen tons of videos on KZbin that take 15 minutes to show you the same fix I posted in just over a minute. @@MTK90 yes! I had this problem start after going through a car wash also! I would wait for it to dry off. Give it a day or so. But the check hybrid system lights you will need to reset regardless more than likely. So you can go under the hood and pull the white wire when you get a chance. Let it sit and plug it back in. Check the video so you are pulling in the correct white wire under the hood.

Sorry, scratch the previous message. I found the place to plug in the wires and not sure if my paper clip was too big and thick because it showed that it was in diagnostic mode and I let it sit for 5 minutes then unplug the wire with all lights still on so I shut the engine off and we'll try again later. We'll try again later, maybe with a smaller paperclip

@@thomaschristie8456 bro listen you know what the problem was in the end? My coolant level was low. There is a reservoir to your left when you pop the hood. Make sure it’s the pink Toyota hybrid coolant and fill that reservoir to the fill line

Nice one.. but you don’t have to do the first part, just unplug that white cable and leave it max 5 mins that should reset it. You don’t have to leave it for 20 mins. I have been doing mine.

DIY mechanic here. First time ( and probably last) working on one of these damn things. I changed the oil, engine coolant, and the inverter coolant on a 2016 model. Later I got a text with a picture of all the lights/messages you showed here and the car just shut down. I feared that somehow I burned out the inverter, lost sleep over that. With hope, I tried your technique but at first it didn't seem to work. I let it sit it for a while. Then I tried driving it and all the warning lights were off. Owner took a test drive and it drove fine, no shut down. She was happy and I was so relieved! I can't thank you enough for the information on your awesome video. I'm so grateful! I owe you a beer!

Just unplug the wire cord order the hood plug it back in. Then it will start working again. Simple Amd worked for me.

Lights came on mine, left it for a hour went back and just the EML and yellow triangle were on, disconnected white wire for 10 mins and they’ve now disappeared too. Good stuff👍

I would give you small warning about OBD2 if you are reading this the older cars it was fine doing what you are doing the newer cars after 2000 up to 2005 if you do this they have way to many modules and computers what you are doing can actually damage the main computer of the car of short computer wiring or fuses it’s not recommended unless you are really in emergency situations ok so having $50 to $100 scanner from autozone or Amazon online once work much better something like Autel or ancel or xtools basic once will reset properly without risking expensive parts or wiring replacement if something could go wrong

I put my foot on the brake and pushed the start button. I have all the lights and the check hybrid system. I then put in the paper clip on #4 pin top row and #5 pin bottom row, all the lights were flashing. I pushed the brake pedal 8 times and the display showed Diag with all the lights flashing. I waited more than 5 minutes and they were all still flashing. After 10 minutes they were still just flashing so I pulled the paper clip and then turned it off. Not sure if that was correct or not but my lights and triangle of death still did not go away.

So, my 2013 Prius C had this issue and I took it to the dealership where now they're saying the battery is bad and needs replaced for 3400 dollars, if I reset the system, does that help the battery last longer or does it clear the error message?

Never worked on a “C” personally. But I would at least try to disconnect the white cable under the hood like I show in the video. It may reset the lights and give you a few weeks of normal driving. But if the dealer says it’s bad. It probably is unfortunately. Let me know if the plug pull helps.

Dude, I've been desperate for this fix. My wife's Prius was looking at a $2,500 battery replacement. This worked like a champ, and now I'm a genius again! (Thanks to you) All started with a back door not getting closed all the way. That lead to a low voltage 12v and all the crazy error codes. This fixed it. Thanks again

Pretty common issue… my abs pump went out.. causing regenerative braking to stop charging the batt… that lead to more problems. But this is the way to reset the hybrid motor back to working again (temporarily) each car is different… thanks for subscribing!

The gear lights-check engine light? Not sure why it would blink. But if it was me. I would either unplug the 12v battery in the trunk and let sit for 30m/reconnect. Or. Pull white plug in under hood/fuse box “like in my video process” and try again. Hope this helps.

Yes the car won’t have power unless the plug gets put back in. When you start back up.. it will reset the navigation.. so that part takes a min.. but then it should be reset

When i push the button to switch to EV MODE tells me that i cannot used at this moment, also when the battery is full, But if i switch the trip mode where i can see the battery, the little car and the motor, they work well (in the screen) how can i reset the whole car? Welcome, I am not a mechanic but on my Prius EV mode only works at low speed (less than 25mph) so I never use it. And I’m not sure what else you want to reset. You can take the orange plug off of the hybrid battery in the trunk. That may reset what you are needing. Hope this helps!

I’ve been told the paperclip part works on the older one for ABS. But I have not tried it myself. I’m pretty sure in the trunk. The hybrid battery can be reset by taking out the orange plastic off switch. But again, I have not tried myself.

Happened to me 2 years ago. Used the paperclip to get home in limp mode. Was the brake actuator. Luckily had 2 months until warranty was void. My prius loves me❤

Unplugged the white plug, then held brake down and start button depressed for 30 seconds, plugged white plug back in. It reset computer without those other steps. 2015 Prius.

I had my tyre valves changed, after that ABS, tyre pressure light and engine light came on and would not go away even after I corrected tyre pressure to the correct one. Followed your advise, and it resolved the problem. As an extra bonus my car radio and rear camera which did not work anymore and which I did not bother to have it repaired started working again!! Thank you for easy solution and for fixing my radio again ( the dealer wanted to replace the radio but luckily I did not go ahead with this). You made my day!

Will this work of the car won't start at all? Car died and it pulled a code to replace the water pump. Did that DIY following a video, pretty simple aside just reaching the bolts! All put back together and it isnt pulling that code but others abd all the lights and check hybrid is on. Will it start if this works?

It worked!! The paperclip part didn't but after that the second part made them all go away and the car started. 🤞🤞 it runs well until we trade it in.
