I definitely miss this style of content. There are creators like Ethoslab and CaptainSparklez that I grew up watching. People making solo survival series without tons of editing. I initially pulled out of every social media because of an ex-friend who was stalking me too much. A year after, I've gotten so used to not posting & just chatting on Discord, that I found myself having a hard time reasoning why I gotta post my life in social media other than to post game screenshots, retweet cool fanarts and read relevant info. I lost connection with a lot of acquaintances, but it was for the better. I can message the acquaintances directly if I wanna chat. Your friends through chat/call/talk or even your private journal are simply the better options to share your life with.

Oversharing and throwing privacy to the wind is definitely a problem. But I think its worth thinking about why so many people (almost compulsively, sometimes) feel the need to post personal stuff online. I've felt that need on several tiny social media accounts I've had. Tiny as in getting 300 followers in a decade. I think many, many people are deeply lonely. The way our society is structured tends to isolate us to having just a few relationships - family, a couple friends, maybe coworkers - and the fast paced nature makes it difficult to keep up with those we do have relationships with, much less dedicated energy to creating many new ones. I think people are knowingly or unknowingly desperately trying to fulfill that need for connection by posting personal things online, desperately trying to fill that hole. The internet is SO accessible, its SO quick and easy to shoot out whatever youre thinking into the endless void of social media, so its what many turn to. And the thing that sucks is even if you are using it to communicate and hang out with friends and using it in a socially fulfilling way, everything is permanently recorded. Unlike in real life, where if you make a mistake or do something really embarrassing only the people who witnessed it will remember it. Maybe theyll tell others, but retellings and memories just arent the same. People forgive and forget and move on. They typically dont pass on deeply personal or sensitive information to others. The internet records clearly and passes it out freely. And that's such a new concept, we arent wired to think of social interactions that way. You can know logically its bad, but overtime those defenses can be worn down when the emotional turmoil overcomes it Its good to be private. Its good to protect yourself. But I think the reason people don't is... we need attention from others. We NEED social interaction. Solitary confinement is torture for a reason. While (most) people aren't in that dire of a situation, and some people certainly do it for the shallow kind of attention, I think overall its a symptom of another, bigger problem.
@FyreofShadow7 ай бұрын
Respect for putting all this out there, you have a mature outlook on things especially compared to the many many people one tends to interact with on the internet on a daily basis. On this topic in general, I once knew someone that shamed me _for_ keeping myself fairly private on the internet, and I never understood them. The internet, even with the wonders it provides, can be a very dangerous place and everything you put out there can be linked back to you, no matter how small. You have a very good take on it.

Doesnt matter if the information is public, with that logic, we should be able to doxx anyone because most peoples information can be found on public databases. So no, dont get complacent with that and dont excuse the people that use that information specifically "against" you. In part yes the current preventative measures is to not put yourself out there and try to be private. So yes not flashing your shiny gold in a dark alley should give you better chances to get caught on the hook, but it shouldnt be like that.

Thanks for sharing this! I felt super awkward telling this one (now ex) friend that I didn't like using a lot of social media, and preferred just keeping things to close friends as well. For context, I am in my 20's??? I am an adult, so why should this even matter to them? I feel like some people expect you to use everything they do, and if you don't then you're frowned at or treated differently. Some people truly don't like being potentially in the public eye, and I get so distracted by having lots of apps notify me as well so 😅 I don't use TikTok anymore, and some apps are on thin ice these days; I had multiple accounts over the course of several years, but it was a waste of time and energy for myself at least. Moral is: maybe don't force yourself to mold the norm when it comes to online platforms. Do what you're most comfortable with, unless you're feeling adventurous or want a change. ❤

@@killer_queen4062 I'm not saying that the harassment is justified, nor am I saying that the person who is getting harassed is more at fault, im simply saying that this issue isn't as one-sided as most people think the majority of the time. some people need to be more careful about what they open themselves up to when they post about their personal life on social media. in an ideal world, people could post about nearly anything they want regarding their personal life without getting harassed for it, but we both know that simply isn't the case. so until then, it's the responsibility of the individual to decide whether or not posting something is a good idea. the more you post about your personal life online, the more likely it is you'll encounter harassment, so where do you draw the line?

This is really good advice. The only social media I have is KZbin where I do music (shameless plug), otherwise I only play Minecraft, sometimes multiplayer. I've made an important distinction between people I trust and people I don't want to worry about trusting. All "online friends" are only online. They don't know my real name. They don't know where I live beyond my country (I live in a big one). When we hang out, we talk opinions, not personal matters. I respect them and do the same. I don't know my friends real names, but we're friends, because I know through playing with them that they are friendly, or generous, or creative. The important distinction is that I don't expect that to ever change. My online friends aren't getting to know me so they can know me in person. We will never be different from online, anonymous friends, and that's OK. Because that relationship exists there. I have IRL friends who connect with me through discord and other places, but that is private with a real life, personal connection. My online friends are just a different circle. It's not an inferior relationship; it's just different. Stay safe everyone!

An eternal verity. As a teen, I had a teacher tell me never to post anything online that I wouldn't want my grandmother to read in a magazine. I try to follow that advice to this day. Do I always succeed? Far from it. But I do try. Also, love your MC playthroughs. Aren't those zombies, skeletons and creepers the worst?!

Randomly stumbled across your channel. Very well put, my dude. Let's say, a character in a movie or a video game, they do their things and mind their business. What you don't see is them posting or better yet, arguing on social media all the time because otherwise the game or movie would be pretty damn annoying. If you wanna be a fighter type of person, go train, no need to post. If you wanna be an adventurer type of person, go to a forest, go camping, no need to post.

Did anyone else immediately think "this is pre 1.13 Minecraft"? Anyways, great video and I love how you're talking about such an important topic over Minecraft, the way you incorporate the subject with what's going on with the game might help it stick better. Thank you for being a great KZbinr!

to be fair, even when having a KZbin gaming career, I make sure to leave as little personal info about me as possible. name, age, etc. I even made an entirely new email just for messages from KZbinrs, and I'm not thinking on doing a face reveal, ever. honestly, that privacy priority that I have, I was inspired by Kikiyama, the creator of Yume Nikki, who despite making one of the most influential games ever, absolutely nothing is known about them, not even their gender or even life status. that aside, I enjoy your videos

Yeah I don't really know about that (SKIP to the last one if it's too long to read). In my school years I was a really quiet kid. Like people knew me, but wouldn't notice if i didn't come to school for example. And I used to ignore all social media except KZbin. Sometimes I would hop on instagram but I've never posted anything myself. And there were various reasons as to why it was that way. First of all, I kinda had a thing for being a "ghost" (so I embraced the whole ghost image and I'd even name all of my accounts phantom or fantasma cuz I thought it was cool and mysterious and edgy, which it kinda was) and besides that, overall I used to be focused on privacy a bit too much I'd say. But now that I'm 21 years old and looking back at things, I kind of regret not having had "participated" in all that. Now I've heard people call it unsocial media and stuff, but if you think about it, it's not particularly true. Most social people you'll meet are probably gonna have an instagram account with at least some photos posted and at least a couple dozen friends there. And while I think Instragram can be very harmful, I also believe it can be very fun at times if you know how to set boundaries and use it properly. I personally regret not having used Instagram because of all the potential friends I could've made and maybe if i did, just maybe, my school crush wouldn't have been so cold to me. Maybe I would've had the balls to ask her out or talk to girls who were into me. Instead, I ignored everything. I just used to be scared; I'm not anymore, but it's a little too late. You know I like to say it's not too late until it is, (its kinda like my own quote) but in this case, it kinda is. She doesn't even remember who I am now. I know I can always find someone better, but I'll never forget all the things about her (wish I could), how we sang together in 4th grade and how awkward we'd both get when teachers told us to work on something together. But now it's all gone. Both good and the bad stuff. Studying at a university is times harder, but at least now I have some good friends to back me up. So in conclusion, social media can be excruciating at times, but at the of the day, you're missing out on a lot of stuff there. Just be mindful of what you post and don't overuse it, because people aren't like that in real life (they kind of are, but not really). I myself have been thinking of starting an insta page and also about making short irl videos about different kinds of stuff, just to overcome some of the insecurities that go all the way back to my school years. Peace.

for me i find that i have the tendency to often just somehow try to force myself into the public eye because i have a major fear of people hating me so as some bizarre coping mechanism i express *as many thoughts as i can* directly into the public to get the feedback of the public (because i believe in the wisdom of the crowd) because i have the tendency to try to make everyone happy (even though i know that nobody will be happy if i try to make everyone happy) but despite all logic and reason telling me not to do so, i still do so, i keep making that same mistake over and over again and by the definition that a lot of people believe insanity is, i would be considered insane because i fail to learn from my mistakes over and over again it's like i punch my hand into the wall, repeatedly and over and over again, expecting that a miracle would happen and my hand would phase right through as the atoms make a perfect arrangement but all i end up doing is injuring my hand instead you would have to slap me so hard until i'm 99 percent *DEAD* - barely alive - for me to realize my mistakes and not do them again, in regards to prioritizing my own privacy because, in the past, i have been slapped 90% dead to try to please everyone, i have been conditioned to do so so you must change me more than they have done so because, as i have previously stated, i am insane because i have failed to change from my mistakes

Me and my family were watching a movie where someone got blackmailed because of stuff she posted online. My mother then used this to tell me "This is why you don't post stuff on social media". She's the one with the profile picture of herself and her family and name and personal emails on her account, I'm the one with a fake name, fake location and random profile picture posting only art that doesn't leak anything about myself. It's funny how clueless some people are when it comes to how private they think their lives are.

i honestly think this video is really important. it's very common to see people just post things with zero consideration for their privacy. privacy's not an important topic in the public eye, so people can accidentally share information which they shouldn't simply due to ignorance. everybody wants to be famous but no one considers what it means for their privacy.

People forget that the internet is the equivalent of the street. Sure some areas are fun and have interesting people to meet, but you will always have the sketchy back alley somewhere, or the suspiciously polite individuals with creepy smiles.

The internet was once a private forum, a collection of niche chatboards. Now, it is the public square. Eyes are on you from everywhere, at all times. Watch yourself.
