Private Onsen Near Tokyo - Hakone, Japan

Such a beautiful hot spring town, so close to Tokyo! Hakone makes for an amazing day trip and we couldn't recommend Hakone Yuryo Onsen enough. Just a short train ride from Hakone is Odawara, with Odawara Castle and a delicious oden restaurant!

@@Drquangpham189 Thanks for watching! It says on their website that tattoos aren't allowed and recently we went back there to use the public onsen and they directly asked us if we have tattoos. But I mean honestly, if you're using a private onsen, no one will see that you have a tattoo so it's really up to you.

Hi there! To be on the safe side, we would suggest reserving the private onsen before the day. You may be okay on a weekday but it’s quite a popular onsen and spring is peak season in Japan. There’s no need for a reservation for the public onsen though 😊 The Japanese pamphlet on their website seems to suggest that you still need to pay for the public onsen even if you use the private onsen. The price will be a little discounted though - ¥1,000 per person on weekdays and ¥1,300 on weekends. Hope you have a lovely trip!

If you’d like to use the private onsen, it’s probably best to make a reservation 😊 There’s a very nice public onsen as well that you can just show up and use.

Plan to go next year during colder or cooler times to enjoy this, and will probably try a mixed bathing onsen if I can find one with less tattoo restrictions but if not private onsen alll the way! thanks

Yeah definitely agree that onsen's are even better in the cooler months! You should be able to find some onsen's that allow tattoos, especially in more touristy areas like Kusatsu onsen. Thank you for watching! 😊

That's a good question. I couldn't say for sure but it says on their website they use a combination of discharge and circulation.

Thank you for the video! Did you book the room in advance? I checked the website where it says to call for reservation. I'm worried that there won't be English-speaking staff and won't be able to book us..

We booked using the inquiry form on their page and they confirmed via email (we did it in Japanese but maybe if you send it with English, they will reply with English too). Alternatively, if you call, you could say in Japanese "eigo demo ii desu ka?" (is English ok?) and 9 times out of 10 they'll find a staff for you who speaks English. Hope this helps!

I was considering going here in the winter time but i noticed the washing areas for the private onsen rooms are outside. Are there washing areas in the inside we could use? I wasn't planning on using the public onsen just the private one.

Hi, thanks for watching! Unfortunately, it does say on their website that tattoos are not allowed. Of course, if your tattoos were covered and you used a private onsen, no one would know but when we went, we were directly asked if we have any. Hi there! The website does say that tattoos are not allowed so you wouldn't be able to enter the public onsen. However, if you were using the private onsen and your tattoos were covered when you entered the facility, I can't see how they would know. The only thing is, they may ask if you have tattoos at reception so it's up to you whether you want to cover it up or not 😊

Hey Kemsuki, thanks for the comment, and love the Gear 5 display pic! I had a look at the website, and it explicitly says that customers with tattoos are not allowed into the baths. There's public baths and private baths at Yuryo. In the public baths, even if you cover your arms upon entry, other customers will see once you enter the bath and they have the right to report you and the staff will then have to ask you to leave. So I would advise against that. However, if you're going to hire a private bath, and you completely cover your tattoos at reception, once you get to your private booth there's no way for anyone to know. Amongst the many rare stories I've seen on Twitter, not once have I seen, nor never heard of onsen staff asking to reveal body parts to check for tattoos. :)
