Hello Mr. Thomasson, I like to thank you for your Private Pilot Lesson videos, it's actually my first time watching one, I'm glad I found your's first. I watch the first two or three and this one. I appreciated your great, knowledgeable, and wise instructor. I took some notes and I'm sure I will not forget to keep my hands on the throttle, always work the rotter, use down town at the beginning and end of transmission with tower, and keep my eyes off the run way or cot pit and aim for the camel mount on the hills of Tennessee, if the landscape haven't change in three years or if ever I actually learn to fly and visit Knoxville Tn. You also did a superb job as a student, now Captain ??? Wanted to thank you and congratulate you in appreciation of your video.d Juan Torres July 6, 2018

Glad you liked the videos and thanks for the comment. I completed my training and got my certificate in October 2015. I have my 2 year flight review this week (after taking about a year off from flying). I hope to be posting some new videos in the next few months as I begin training for the instrument rating.

Good videos...great instructor. I have not seen any other instructor teach aerobatics...what a great learning tool! I assume that the Skyhawks and Cherokees used by flight training schools aren't structurally up to the task. One strange thing, I haven't heard you mention is the use of flaps during the landings. It could be that you are putting them in and just not mentioning it.

Hey man, I know this will sound weird, but you gave me a really good list of books in a comment a few months ago. Well, today I finally had some time and wanted to setup my reading list. I always planned to come back and review your comment when this moment came, but whad'ya know? That video is deleted and there's no way for me to view your comment again... That being said, would you mind making me the extreme favor of going through your KZbin comment history and pasting it here? I've looked at my own history and my reply to you on that comment was on November 22, so it should be very easy for you to find if you go back to that date. I really valued your list of books and the fact that you curated them in such a nice way for me. I'm really sorry to bother you in this way.. I was an idiot for not saving them on the spot and assuming it will always be available.

Nice video! It looked like you were indicating 100 on final for every approach. Is there a reason you were flying so fast? Or did I read it incorrectly?
@tommythomasson4768 жыл бұрын
Thanks! No, 100 is about right. The airspeed gauge on this aircraft reads MPH instead of knots, and my instructor John (a former Navy pilot) is big on no-flaps landings. So most of my approaches are around 80-85 knots without flaps. I did about 130 landings during my PPL instruction, and I'll bet 110 of those were no flaps.

That's new to me...but he's the flight instructor and he knows what he's doing. I'm guessing he is used to shooting all of those high-speed carrier approaches ;) Have fun!

@@tommythomasson476 Hi Tommy! I enjoyed your video. Don't make flap up landings your standard after you've got your license. If it's windy/gusty use less flaps, and practice flap up landings occasionally, but a normal landing should be with flaps.

Let the guy learn from minor mistakes and allow him to correct them himself. Plane aint a jet that will fall out the sky.

What is correct Flap setting in a circuit ? Do Flaps stay down after takeoff, or do you retract them just after, and if so at what point or speed do you need wich Flap setting?
@bradschak6 жыл бұрын
Donald Trunp flaps stay down on takeoff until a rate of climb is established and airspeed increase. There is white arc on the airspeed indicator that is the flap operating speed.
@mattbasford62995 жыл бұрын
@@bradschak unless I'm doing a short or soft field takeoff I never use flaps on takeoff.
@swedflyer46534 жыл бұрын
@@bradschak Cessna 172 is not recommended to takeoff with flaps more than 10. On touch and go, retract to either UP or 10. Flaps 20 is for balked landing aka go around. Instructors are teaching differently how to fly a circuit. When you have your own license and gain experience you will see that the way you are taught might not always does the trick. Sometimes you have to modify when you are doing things in the circuit for example noise sensitive areas, weather, traffic etc. Some people teach flaps 10 abeam threshold, some teach flaps 10 once on base..

Do you have to use flaps when taking your checkride?
@tommythomasson4767 жыл бұрын
Yes. If I remember correctly, I had to do a go-around, a full flaps, and a no flaps landing for the check ride. I believe the full flaps landing was a simulated "engine out" scenario.

When speaking to the tower, why do you end every sentence with "downtown"?
@hvacmike11756 жыл бұрын
No tower or closed at the time of this video. using CTAF to make position reports
@tommythomasson4766 жыл бұрын
The "small" airport in Knoxville is called "Knoxville Downtown" - referenced by the identifier DKX. The big airport is called "McGhee Tyson" and is identifier TYS. The short (radio) name for the DKX airport is "Downtown", thus CTAF (loose) radio/pattern calls are "Downtown".
@jmitterii26 жыл бұрын
When using at a non towered or closed tower (CTAF) other airports often use the same frequency, you end the transmission with your airport so if someone listened in the middle or end of the transmission they can quickly discern if it applies to them, and if so they can call up and ask someone to repeat.
