As someone that has been collecting cards for 30+ years, as someone that has worked in 3 different hobby card shops in 2 different states i feel in the past few years im living in a alternate reality. 4-5 years ago was not that long ago feels like yesterday. 5 years ago you could buy tons of good hobby boxes for $100-$180. it was only 5 years ago that all good hobby boxes were cheap and fairly priced and the top of the line cards like national treasures were $500 a box. It was only 5 years ago where you can go to wal mart anytime of the day on anyday and the shelves would be packed with prizm blasters and other sought after retail product and the blasters were $20 each and just sat there for weeks and hanger boxes were like $8 and just sat there. Cause no one wanted them, there was no value in retail. Now the retail blasters are $40-$70 and you get less value and a more watered down product. Now a good hobby box is $800 instead of $150 and you get a more watered down product. Just years ago we were getting multiple numbered cards in a box now you might get 1 or 2. Just a few years ago nearly everything was game worn now basically nothing is the jersey cards at this point are a huge gimmick. Just years ago there were so many on card autos in products where a product like National Treasures was a staple in the hobby cause it was all on card autos. Now mostly everything is stickers. People paying money for wax like they are millionaires. Most people barely make $4,000 a month working a full time job but that is the cost of 1 hobby box or 2 now a days. Most people are just racking up debt on credit cards and filing bankruptcy over this, its sad but true i know people that have. Most people dont make enough money to buy $800-$2000 hobby boxes. Where is all this free money coming from? Im talking about the average working person. Does not make sense. But how many times do these people need to pay $800 for a box of cards then get back $50 in value over and over again. In 2021 when the pandemic was going on it was a little more normal cause allthough the price of wax went high the singles sold for way higher so it offset it. I broke a ton in group breaks at that time. I was selling base cards of lebron and curry for $10 each, inserts for $40-$80 of semi-stars. Now fast forward just a few years later the price on singles has cratered on many cards 90% but wax prices are still sky high. Havent bought a hobby box in years and opened very little retail at all. I but in to breaks occasionally if its a product i like or if i see value in it but its just not there 90% of the time. It has priced many out of the game and i can see it more and more by the week. Eventually the people will run out of money and wake up. I mean factually the Median income for people is $59,000 a year. After taxes thats like $47,000a year. average cost of rent is $2,500 a month then factor in car payments, utility's, insurance, gas, food, etc Most people cannot afford this. This house of cards no pun intended is slowly crumpling and it wont be long til it completely falls. Man just a few years ago i was buying prizm hobby boxes for $120 a box, i bought cases of National treasures at $2500 a case just years ago now its $5000 a box annd you get back nothing most of the time. This years NFL national treasures is a complete joke. 90% of the cards pulled no one wants. They either dont ever sell or sell for a few dollars max. In nba its wemby or bust and maybe a nice lebron, luka or curry. Thats about it 99% of the other players are just not wanted. In mlb at least you get more people that collect rookies and stars but still most cards sit. In NFL its top QB's only while hall of fame vets sell for pennies on the dollar while QB rookie cards of players that turn out to be busts a year or 2 down the road sell for $1000s. Look at how much money people have lost in the past 2 years on Mac Jones, Desmond Ridder, Kenny Pickett, Bryce Young, Trevor Lawrence, Sam Howell, Bailey Zappe, Daniel jones, Zach wilson, Trey Lance, Deshaun Watson,...... and the list goes on. While there are rare low #ed sought after cards and high graded rookies of hall of famers that sit for pennies on the dollar compared to them. Thats my rant its long but maybe someone read it. The economy is a lot worse then people think it is overall sector by sector and this level of degeneracy in sports cards is about to find a rude awakening very soon. Its not even a hobby anymore. It is gambling with no oversight and a greed scam filled group of people. At least you think like i do and most normal people.

I can't wait til the people realize how this whole thing is set up and just stop. Had everyone just thought for 2 seconds about the ridiculousness of a box going for 3k or more, they would've realized right then that the illusion is just that. This 800 dollar box of hobby is about 8 times too expensive. There are so many damn Wemby cards out there that the decline in value is steep and fast. Panini is very obviously grabbing every dime they can before making their exit

He also said that he does this 40 hours a week. He's also in it to make money. It's a job. Panini is doing what everyone does and tries to make money the best way that they can. It's all for profit. People aren't scamming other people. If they're willing to spend the money. It's like they say about a single card and its value. It's worth what you sell it for at the time.

I’ve been working in the hobby since 2012, and for myself since 2020. It’s possible to both run a successful business AND not be a greedy prick about it. A successful business should be able to survive in this hobby without needing P&D campaigns, buyer FOMO tactics, etc etc. We operate our business like any other business in every other industry. We purchase wholesale from distributors and play the market for the best prices possible. We offer our breaks with as competitive pricing as we can and as a result we have built an incredible community on KZbin. We are one of the most hyper-optimized companies at our scale in the hobby. Similar companies doing similar volume have 10+ employees. We operate in one of the two most expensive states in the country do business in and I’m incredibly thankful that every week that I’m able to pay the 4 1/2 other full time employees on my team.

 That's a theory. Businesses can be successful with tactics that other people don't like. It's their choice. It sounds like the hobby is starting to really get to you. Along with the people that are hating on content creating. It's your choice to stick with it, but it definitely sounds like you're starting to hate on it. You sound proud of what you do, but that doesn't mean that you're right about everything. You just sound frustrated at this point. Take a good look at what you really do. You are selling product to a customer. Topps didn't start selling bubble gum and baseball cards in 1952 for $0.05, without making a profit. They weren't making cards to give them out for free. That price has obviously gone up. It's the world we live in. Like it or not.
@taylorkoss5106
@taylorkoss5106 Ай бұрын
@@roychisnell9646 your assessment is so off base, it is borderline comical. I don't know what you do for a living, but there are ways to make plenty of money and not be a total scumbag. Playing on people's lack of knowledge is weak. Fractionalizing breaks by player, and charging an insane amount per spot, where your boxes end up at double or more of the normal price is unacceptable just b/c people are duped into paying. That is a crazy theory. So, we know DECA Fotl had very few cards in the product that could even allow the buyer to break even at the absurd price of $3500 & up . Hitting an LBJ Gold and still losing thousand plus dollars is nutso. Yes, people made mistakes and bought into those breaks, but i don't think that absolves the Breaker of their malfeasance. Buyers trust the people they break with. To violate that trust, and jack up the price to insane values, to purposefully hurt the buyers in your community, is fucked. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with commenting on the practice. And putting a spotlight on the practice. That has nothing to do with hating. and who said RGL thinks he is right all the time. But he is right about this. it is black and white. Some breakers chose to make insane profit at the expense of their community. They could have made a nice profit and looked out for their buyers. Instead, they chose to purposefully gouge them..knowing it would take hitting a miracle card to break even, let alone make any money. it is pathetic. RGL does sell a product to a customer-- but he does it at a fair price, and he goes out of his way to try and educate his community on the various products and value in the hobby. None of this means he is right all the time. But I honestly don't even understand the point of your posts. Yes, he makes money But that doesn't lump him into the same category as those who are raping their customers. and it isnt ok to rape customers just b/c they chose to buy in. That is a silly way of thinking. Certainly, people do it. But that will only hurt the hobby int he long run, and it certainly hurts those customers in the short run. Nothing wrong with shining a light on the practice and calling people out.

Sports cards are what saved me in my childhood and what created a bond between my son and I once I became a father and now because unfortunate events in our lives we can't even afford them all we can do is watch them on TV it's sad..... You mentioned what happens when Fanatics gets all the licenses... well tiptoed around it. I can understand maybe holding off passing judgement in your shoes as a content creator but man, I just don't understand people acting like fanatics getting a literal monopoly on the big 3 licenses is going to be a good thing. Fanatics has a long history of aggressive and somewhat shady/ruthless business. Monopolies are NEVER ever good for consumers. You combine those 2 facts and it's not like it takes a crystal ball to see what's coming. Even more jacked up prices, worse customer service, a market that will be even MORE flooded with product (1000 of every hot player 1of1's every year?). Driving head first and full speed into junkwax 2.0

I loved your comment about “some top 10 list that doesn’t matter”🤣. Although Ian seems like a nice guy (when he’s not second-guessing Nikki), he clearly jumped on the band wagon at the beginning of the pandemic (like Geoff Wilson) and is most definitely not qualified to evaluate cards. Although his top 10 list is somewhat entertaining, his values and the way he comes up with them are all over the place. Just watch some of his early videos, he is obviously a passionate person but he knows very little about the hobby. I gotta hand it to him though for his motivation, he has more motivation in his pinky finger than I do in my entire body. I couldn’t put a video together like that, so I do give him credit where credit is due

Thankfully a lot of people saw the ridiculousness of those inflated prices. Unfortunately a lot didn't, and they overpaid for fotl boxes. Shame on those breakers, who greedly overcharged. Thanks rgl for telling it like it is. That's why I'll always buy breaks from you.

I have only watched the intro and not the rip but I would like to say, and I understand literally no one cares, but the last few years have been so stupid that I no longer collect football or basketball (I PC Buccaneers singles) but I have zero interest in breaking, ripping, or buying retail that has anything to do with those 2 sports! UFC, baseball, and soccer (and OF COURSE WWE) are actually STILL FUN!

Dutch auctions are the worst thing to happen to the hobby. It was by design. I remember the year before it started. I was a decent sized breaker and friends with alot of the big boys. Panini had a meeting with all the main distributors and top breakers. One item discussed was Dutch auctions. Breakers can set the price, price out the general public and charge what they wanted. It would crush all the smaller breakers, stores, and create a false boom. I was against it then. Still am now. I left the hobby because of what was happening and truly believe Panini is the devil. The big 3 distributors, peach state, southern, and the 3rd I shall not name that is the worst, are as evil as they come. Not to mention those like Platinum, backyard, Layton, firehand ect were complacent and cheered it on. You sould like me back when this started. Trying to sound the alarm. Good on you for trying, but you won't win. The machine is bigger than us all. And this hobby is based on gambling, it's a fact. And gamblers will pay whatever because their sick and need the fix. So no way we can all come together and refuse to buy. Watching new NFL for the last 2 years sell at despicable prices with none of the top rookie autos was a clear signal. People are sheep and do as their master says. Anyways...

When you say correction they are fighting do u think a crash is imminent? Newbie who likes ripping cards with his boys asking. Thanks for keeping it real.
@RunGoodLife
@RunGoodLife Ай бұрын
No, I don't believe an industry crash is imminent simply because of the amount of new people still coming into the hobby. If we weren't seeing newer and casual collectors, then I'd be more catious. But right now shows are packed, LCS's are selling out of product the day of release, etc etc. There's a lot of doom and gloom on social media but the reality is the hobby outside of what you online is really strong. Much stronger than when I was boots on the ground doing marketing for COMC from 2015-2020.

The only way to stop fighting this price correction you’re talking about is for everybody to collectively stop paying such absorbent amounts for unopened wax, and that includes breakers. I love your content, but let’s face it, if there wasn’t somebody out there willing to spend $2000 plus on a box (and that includes breakers) then the prices would come down much more quickly. The average person cannot afford a $2000 box, but they can however afford a single spot in a break, and breakers know this so they are willing to spend $2000 on a box and then sell 30 spots at $100 apiece and make a quick thousand bucks. I actually love breakers and I love joining breaks, but something has to give and it won’t happen until breakers refuse to pay these high prices.

@Dj_________
@Dj_________ Ай бұрын
@@nydibs honest breakers like RGL are actually good for the hobby, it’s the market manipulating twerps whose entire world is only themselves so in turn that’s all they care about. Eventually the cream will rise to the top, and eventually morons will realize that breakers like Backyard Breaks are only your friend when you’re spending money. Those chumps capitalized on the “let’s go” culture and all those fools that were using mommy and daddy‘s credit card to join their over-priced breaks. It’s taking longer than I thought, but eventually people will realize that 95% of the breakers out there know very little about this hobby and are willing to pump anything up including Mac Jones and Zach Wilson, LMFAO

RGL and the other breakers in the RGL community are the only breakers I trust and break with. Entered one backyard break, lost 100%, there’s no first time buyer bonuses like Grant likes to say, there’s no sympathy packs, you just get a base card for your hundreds of dollars. Yes it’s luck, but at least RGL & crew have the guts to apologize if you miss, throw you a sympathy pack, and run giveaways to the chat & members. This community is what the hobby needs to copy. Love you guys 🫡
