The reason why were there some many people is because that was literally forbidden concert. The police (milicija) didnt allow the concert for nationalist reason. At that time, Yugoslavia was falling apart due to fall of communist regimes all around the Europe and due to national revival in yugo states. Rose (Ruža) was the name of Jasenko Houra's (Prljavo kazalište rythm guitarist and main songwriter) mother who passed away before song was released. That song was an ode to his late mother and also it became unofficial anthem of Croatia who fought for indepedence in bloody war 2 years later.

Been 7y old, remember watching this on tv, and wondering what is happening..few months later this song became one of the anthems during the war.. there is not one croat that doesn’t shed a tear looking at this images…Mr. Rob its nice to see people from across the ocean to be interested in exYu rock, there is a lot of good music in these parts

I see that you truely impressed. It is not a lover song. It is tribute to mother of the chief of the band. She stay strong and nutured and fostered his child to remeber his origins and traditions in the time while they were strongly forbidden. Then his mother passed away but hers legacy remained. Those are deep and profound lyrics about identity rhat is survining despite and inspite heavy obsticles. It is also an urge for freedom after 13 centuies. All of that in one song. Merry Christmas to you, Rob, you are great!

It is not a love song. It's about his mother..he sang about her as if she was the last croatian rose.(.and for him she was just that) .only in that moment anything "croatian" was higly politisized ..even the intimate song like this... it was the song about her deth after all..I always had an impresion thay were surprised by the fact that this song become a nationalist hymn..but I might be wrong..

I was there somewhere in the crowd. 15 years old ... :) It was a miracle nobody got hurt in that crowd. As someone already commented this concert and this song was a form of protest against current communist regime that's why there was so many people.

It was forbidden in Yugoslavia to say that something is Croatian, you could get in trouble, jail even, because of nationalism. When I first heard it, I refused to believe my ears, I was shocked. That's why it was so popular in Croatia, just because of that word, an ordinary song about the mother that died.
