Tataki, same for earthened floors compacted and compressed layers; local sanwa earth, lime and bittern (magnesium chloride, calcium chloride, salts). Instead of modern fast-curing concrete or mortar, tataki takes skilled formulation, labor intensive pounding and has a long curing time, but great continuation of traditional techniques. Beautiful work. Magical. Imagine a maiden with snow white skin in a pure white kimono sitting in the center with shoulders and knees slightly exposed, hair partially loose and letting the water run over her feet while playing a shakuhachi. A light breeze of sakura petals flowing would be nice but maybe too much.

We use conifers a lot in Japanese gardens! More often deciduous are used, though.😅
