Batman has arguably the best rogues' gallery of any comic-book universe. Hollywood has had its fair share of hits and misses in translating his arch-rivals to the screen. In this episode of "Good & Bad Acting," LA acting coach Anthony Gilardi reacts to 12 of the most iconic live-action Batman villains, reviewing the highs and lows of the actors' performances.
From Adam West's campy 1960s TV series to Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight" trilogy, the timeless appeal of the Batman universe has always been tied in with a colorful array of madmen and criminals. These include one of the most famous villains in comic-book history, the Joker, along with a stacked lineup of equally memorable adversaries, like Catwoman and the Penguin.
So, how does an actor put their own spin on a supervillain as beloved as these - and in a pantheon that includes the likes of Jack Nicholson, Eartha Kitt, and Heath Ledger? Gilardi breaks that down for us as he watches and critiques four Jokers, two Catwomen, a Riddler, a Penguin, a Scarecrow, and more.
When it comes to building a villain's mythos, many actors make use of what Gilardi calls "shtick" - a character's unique set of mannerisms and quirks, which add another unsettling layer to their presence in any scene. Gilardi looks at how different actors developed their signature Batman villain tics, from Heath Ledger's lip-smacking to Eartha Kitt's Catwoman purr. He breaks down how Kitt used her famous voice and eyes to play up Catwoman's feline nature in the "Batman" TV show; how Tom Hardy nailed the Bane voice in "The Dark Knight Rises"; and how Margot Robbie gave Harley Quinn a singsong cadence in "Suicide Squad." Gilardo also evaluates cases where actors were less successful with their shtick, from Uma Thurman's take on Poison Ivy in the much maligned "Batman & Robin" to Jared Leto's panned turn as the Joker in 2016's "Suicide Squad."
But the best villains are much more than a bundle of creepy affectations and maniacal laughter; they're well-rounded characters, portrayed with complexity and moral ambiguity on screen. Gilardi explains how an actor like Jack Nicholson or Joaquin Phoenix channels their character's backstory into their actions and mannerisms - and how some of the more divisive performances, like Jim Carrey's Riddler or Danny DeVito's Penguin, tend to fall short in this dimension. Beyond character history, Gilardi looks at how actors establish complex motivation for their villain and convey what makes their characters tick. In "Batman Begins," for example, he examines how Cillian Murphy developed a specific set of behavioral triggers for Dr. Jonathan Crane, the mad scientist known to his victims as the Scarecrow. And in "The Dark Knight," he analyzes how Heath Ledger expressed the nihilism of the Joker through all the minutiae of his performance. Everything, from Ledger's gait, posture, and vocal inflection to the way he slaps on his Joker makeup, expresses the forces of chaos that drive the Clown Prince of Crime.
Gilardi emphasizes the importance of locating the humanity in each of Batman's famous foes, no matter how depraved their actions may be. As a case study, Gilardi evaluates Jack Nicholson's legendary turn as the Joker in 1989's "Batman" - a performance that captures what Gilardi calls "liberated madness," which ultimately serves to humanize the Caped Crusader's main nemesis. He also examines how Joaquin Phoenix's character study in the 2019 standalone film "Joker" adds a sympathetic side to the Clown Prince's origins. In particular, Gilardi breaks down the genius of the bathroom scene, an improvised dance that marks the beginning of Arthur Fleck's transformation into antihero.

@@davids8127 Seriously... I never thought about the whole DC vs Marvel thing when I think about The Dark Knight trilogy. To me, the Nolan Batman movies were a tier above. They didn't and don't need to be compared to a Marvel movie because they aren't comparable. Marvel movies are about silly amounts of action and over the top displays of skill and quick wit thats becoming of a "superhero." They use their awesome power when overcoming a seemingly unbeatable enemy, that constantly one ups the last foe every single time over the course of all movies in the MCU, to become more and more comically powerful, and impossible to defeat.... It's good fun, stupid fun though. The Nolan Batman trilogy was so much more than just a bit of over the top fun that's not taken too seriously, though they certainly gave us that in just the right doses. I remember when they first came out, it didn't matter how many times I'd seen them, any movie in the trilogy this applies to, if one came on television I was going to sit down and watch it. Period. And it was exciting every time, it was a good night when I was watching batman. Everything about those movies was great. It was just an undisputed fact that you knew didn't need argued to anyone, because they knew it too. They had so much atmosphere, inspired so much emotion. Every single performance was world class, everyone from Tom Hardy's Bane, to Christian Bales Batman, Scarecrow, Harvey Dent, Gordon, Alfred of course, and Morgan Freeman... No he didn't play anyone in the movie...Morgan Freeman plays Morgan Freeman, and that's the only character Morgan Freeman acts out! I don't even NEED mention the legendary, monumental performance, Heath Ledger gifted to all of us as The Joker... Standing tall throughout the test of time, but not untouched by the tragedy of his death, shortly thereafter. This just adds even more to the emotion, and the nostalgia it delivers though! Heath Ledgers last fully completed role... To add to that, there's a mystique, and a darkness that surrounds the whole thing, what with people saying that Ledger had to put himself into such a horrific headspace to produce this treasure of a performance for us, that's what caused him to end up dying tragically of a drug overdose much too young. All of those rumors, whether true or not, definitely contribute to the overall legend of Nolan's Batman films. .... I think that.... I love The Dark Knight trilogy more than I realized I did until this moment. I hadn't even thought of the movies in a decade... I should watch them again. Yeah, I should do that... I think I will.

@@danielnelson4881 I agree, I didnt compare them I think they way above the typical blockbuster style, I meant about the recent series with Justice league etc, they wanted to replicate what marvel did which they failed miserably. And yes that timelessness what makes the Nolan trilogy, I dont know how many times I saw the Dark knight but it always gave me new way of appreciacion for some details or brilliant dialogue. Its going down as one of all time best trilogy for me the Lord of the rings is the first because its an epic adventure throughout but Dark knight remains ine of my all time favorutie movie. I dont think anyone come close to it for long time as Nolan kinda made his own genra with his take.

The DCEU has been trying to copy/capture the Nolan trilogy’s magic ever since and they will only continue to make themselves look foolish. The “closest” they’ve gotten is with Phillips’ Joker film because instead of trying to copy/capture what Nolan did, they allowed the director (and lead actor) to make something unique and their own. I mean, for all intents and purposes, Joker is just a deep dive into one man’s descent into madness; appreciating and mourning his loss of innocence; his final surrender to his psychological disease. But yes: Heath Ledger will continue to be the best Joker, followed by Nicholson, and finally Phoenix/Hamill closely behind

It gets a lot of hate but I actually really liked Birds of Prey, it wasn't the greatest movie ever but it was really entertaining Margot Robbie is a phenomenal Actress not just as Harley Quinn but in other films she's been in too. My one complaint was I felt like Black Mask wasn't that great, I love Ewan McGregor but he just felt really odd. I know some people see the almost all Female cast and think it'll be as awful as Charlie's Angels or Ghostbusters reboots, or whatever, but they handle it in a great non cringey way like you'd automatically expect. 2 examples of a nearly entirely female cast I'd say are Suspiria remake (there's 2 men in that entire movie) or Annihilation where every Scientist sent into the Shimmer is a Woman, which I never really noticed the first time, because it doesn't cut down the Men, or make it be or focus on the gender of the characters, it lets them just be characters without caring about making a statement or making it the selling point. With Birds of Prey, when they finally come together as a team they've all got different but still similar motivation for being there, other than "we're strong independent Women" which a lot of modern day movies fail to do, being a Woman is their entire character. Sorry for the long rant I get carried away talking about movies because I just love movies too much.

It’s a weird take on Two Face to me. Two Face was a villain that above all cared about duality, chance, and of fate. Obviously there have been a ton of different takes on the characters over the decades but I guess for me while ultimately I think Two Face would always honor the outcome of the flip of his coin, there seems like nothing other than stone cold killer in Eckhart’s performance. While maybe it’s not necessary to the plot progression in The Dark Knight I would have liked a scene where Two Face struggles emotionally with the reality of his own duality. While it’s clear that Two Face is a chance-leads- directly-to-fate persona than Harvey Dent is at any point, it would be nice to have seen more internal emotional struggle than something so one sided.

Tom Hardy's Bane is my favorite and seriously deserves more credit. Heath Ledger's Joker will forever be legendary, there's no arguments there. But selling this menacing force of fear and darkness and how much he intimidated Batman on his first encounter and his monologue on the differences between him and Bruce on their use of Darkness was just amazing. The Joker's lines made you think about his perspective of society but Bane absolutely haunted you on what real fear and real torture and darkness really was and just his delivery of his monologue sends chills up my spine every single time like "oh no. You're in my element now. And there is nothing comfortable or safe about it."

Something I've always loved about TDKR's Bane is the voice. It would have been such an easy decision to give him a deep, guttural tone, to try and force initimidation out of him, but just like with the soft hand touch scene that was dissected in the video, his voice being so... thin, higher pitched, thematically mis-matched to Bane's physical appearance, it used contrast to fantastic effect.

Considering that one of Penguin's iconic lines in Batman Returns is "I'm an animal!!!", if you say Devito's take lacks humanity well I would say that he is portraying the character exactly as Burton wanted, and so Burton is more to blame for that particular take on the character. I actually like the depiction (even though it varies from the source material) and did feel that Penguin's death - along with the penguins as the unofficial 'casket bearers' - was one of the scenes with the most pathos in the film.

Hearing that coach talk about Ledger's idea of imitating a ventriloquist doll kinda brought a lot of things forward to me... like how he changes posture in the most awkward ways and timing possible, or how many small things he does during scenes seem like a failed attempt at imitating what a real person would do in the same situation (like eating something in a party, or doing small talk in a social gathering). Sometimes, you even see him scanning the room after doing something to see and analyze how people react, as if nothing he does comes naturally to him and has to search for feedback It's subtle, but there's TONS of stuff you can read in Ledger's performance as the Joker... it's actually uncanny some times

That was a comment from my perspective as a non english speaker. Well, non native at least...I don't have any trouble understanding movies in english unless there's a very strong accent. And his filtered and distorted voice is very hard to understand... But in any case, I meant it as a little joke. I actually really liked his character, just with subtitles for this one xD

As lauded as Ledger and Phoenix's performances are, Murphy's turn as Scarecrow was amazing, especially the scene with Falcone. The way he goes from Crane to Scarecrow and the "They scream... and they cry. Much like you are now" Was mindblowing when I first saw it in the cinema.

Great description. That's how I feel about it too and why it's an important performance. Joaquin very thoroughly maps out Arthur's pain in almost surgical detail and with raw realism, and you can vividly sense his pain, but once he crossed the line what I feel is fear. When he's leaving Sophie's apartment and It's not clear if he killed her, but the camera is shooting from below and his face is mostly in shadow, I was more afraid of him than of any horror movie character I've ever seen. It really felt like a murderous psycho just walked in the room at that moment. Anyone who calls this a bad performance is an idiot and looks at the world in black and white. They like what they THINK they should like, and believe that everything else is terrible.

His acting was good, honestly. He just let the fact that they did Penguin totally wrong get in the way of his judgement. That was the director's/writer's jobs to get right. DeVito just brought their vision to life, and did a damn good job in doing so. But I will agree with him that they screwed up Penguin and did his character terribly. DeVito could've played a great Penguin that was faithful to the source, not this hideous, unnecessary monstrosity.

Leto's performance felt so forced and contrived...like he was playing a character impersonating a character. There was no conviction in anything he did - it felt like a very phoney-crazy front, like what you see someone do during a police interrogation when they're trying to convince the detectives that they're insane and not at fault for whatever crime they committed.
