An act of kindness that I love that is not really known outside of my community and tribe (Diné/Navajo). Is the fact that the during pandemic the Irish community provided help and assistance to my tribe. It was at a time when the Diné and Hopi communities were struggling during that time due to the increased infections and suffering families. It was in response for what the Choctaw people did during the potato famine of 1847 by providing the Irish people with monetary assistance. In the end I love the solidarity we have with the people of Ireland 💚

It's not just cool that the Shawnee are getting their due here, but also extremely cool that Serpent Mound gets associated with their civilization. There's been a two-centuries-long attempt to separate the Shawnee (and other tribes) from the indigenous earthworks of North America. Even today, despite growing evidence that Serpent Mound can be traced to the direct predecessors of the Shawnee, many still try to claim that it's far older than it seems to be, mainly in an effort to deny Shawnees and other native descendants from having as much say in the site as non-indigenous state and federal officials. It may not seem like a big deal to have them associated in a game like this, but it's still very rare to see mainstream media and entertainment allow modern tribes to be directly connected to the monuments of their ancestors.

IIRC Firaxis _did_ consult the Cree nation when they added them to Rise & Fall. The problem is like anything else, the Cree aren't a monolith, so one group is okay with Civ 6's implementation, but others were not impressed. I believe it was one or a group of tribal chiefs who objected because at the end of the day Civ as a 4x game is relatively imperialistic in nature; it's a game about expanding and claiming land and resources in a way that embodies the Western values that led to the horrors of colonialism which naturally would make anyone unfamiliar with Civ uncomfortable with such a notion. I think this time around with the Shawnee, Firaxis has made a better PR effort to ensure that tribal members understand that Civ isn't just about conquest and extermination. Hopefully they can continue this trend. I would love to see more NA indigenous representation like the Comanche or Apache.

One of the biggest reasons that representation matters is that media is often the first exposure to another culture. My love for history started as a kid playing Age of Empires. I would read all the historical background before missions and about the cultures. Same for AoE2 in the medieval period. Later, I learned in history classes what I already experienced through game play. Making sure that first exposure is accurate and not just filled with colonial stereotypes goes a really really long way.

I don't think the difference between Native American consideration and Irish or Scottish consideration is recency so much as that the Scots and Irish control Scotland and Ireland, at least to a degree (and I recognize this was not always the case). If the English had mostly eradicated the Irish and settled in Ireland, there's a strong chance you would need to bring in Irish representation because they'd have become a tiny minority. Native American tribes need this kind of consideration and representation specifically because of how few of them are left.

Like I posted elsewhere, I wanted to say that they did a really great job with the Shawnee. I also wanted to say they did do a good job with the Cree in Rise and Fall as well because some unfiar comparisons have been coming up. Part of the difference is what the terms mean. Cree actually describes a large family of cultures and nations who happen to have mostly a common language, and because of that, it's very hard to say what would constitute a specific nation or a state, even in the time of Poundmaker. That's even hard to do now since native nations everywhere in the Americas, including mine, are still struggling to eke out more autonomy and contending with many political layers and different levels of recognition between colonial states, and sometimes from each other. The Shawnee have a leg up in one respect because they've managed to maintain a nation that is recognized by the US (and therefore less oppressed than others) and maintained their name which is synonymous with a distinct language, geographic heritage, and history. For many of us who have lost more during experienced periods of rapid genocide or destruction, this isn't the case, and we have to fight to not just be recognized outright, but also for our self-determinative CHANGES and how we want to be recognized. Politics, names, independence, and we even have to fight against the push to make race a determinative factor of who can be included among our people. All of this means what Firaxis achieved with the Shawnee doesn't mean they didn't achieve anything meaningful with the Cree and Shoshone etc, as we all have unique political statuses and cultural terms, so unless you do your own groundwork outside of a video game and the internet (our histories are still poorly recorded online), you might not understand something very basic, like having a common cultural language doesn't mean two areas are in the same nation. Lastly, I hope games like this, plus Ara including Wilma Mankiller of the Cherokee, don't "stop" here and continue to add more. I know of course you absolutely cannot fit every culture and nation in the world into one forex game, but even within the label "native american" itself is as much diversity in cultures and states as europe or any other continent. I'm still wishing for my own little culture to be recognized like this someday, we'd be a great city state at the very least! 😅

So at around 19:00 Potato mentions that there's no real Irish chief or Scottish chief to consult on these matters, but at the same time it's because you don't really need to. Scottish and Irish traditions (and in the case of the Irish, language) have been better preserved than a lot of native traditions and languages and the knowledge is readily available (less so perhaps for Gaelic, but you can always consult an Irish institution who can point you the right way). In the case of a lot of native american societies, that knowledge is either lost to time or on the verge to be. Firaxis partnering with the Shawnee on this is a huge step forward considering the "minor" imbroglio the inclusion of the Cree did in Civ 6 (I'm sure it wasn't minor for the people who felt insulted with the idea that they would build an empire in the same way as the people who ended up oppressing them). My personal dream would be to have the Inuit in there somewhere. It'd be cool from both a cultural (people who've lived in the north for millennia) and gameplay standpoint (instead of having tundra into farms like Canada in 6, you could just straight up take massive advantage of stuff that is already there.)

The original tribe of the Confederacy was the chippawa. Almost all tribes East of the Mississippi and north of Missouri until you get to the areas claimed by the Lakota were a conquered part of the Confederacy. Their biggest strength was the birch canoe. It was so light weight they could maneuver in 1 ft of water and could triple the speed of other canoes. Europeans altered their ship design from the pot belly to the front point flat belly of the birch canoe to increase their efficiency. I thing a triple speed would be better than a +1 strength.

Also just pointing out the difference between the Irish and indigenous people of the US is stark to say the least. The Irish did suffer greatly at the hands of the British and continued to do so for a long time even into the modern era. The indigenous peoples faced extermination on an almost industrial scale in the US. I really wouldn't compare the two as Ireland is a country compared to the indigenous people who were forced into reservations that continue to shrink in size every year. There's a lot of similarities but extreme differences.
@vakistania20 күн бұрын
To be fair, in most cases it was not a hostile extermination in USA, the native americans died from disease brought by the Europeans and from being put in extremely abusive trade relations (mostly by being traded alcohol, which led to them becoming addicted and having to pay more and more to keep up their addiction). It wasn't like the Aztecs and the Conquistador, it was a much slower and insidious process that was horrible in it's own right. So the similarities to how the Irish were treated and the abusive dependency aren't too far off.

As someone who still loves CIV VI, I have all the DLC but play on the XBOX ONE. Unfortunately, the middle/late game crashes every few turns, then takes 10 minutes to reload, testing anyone's patience. I'm suprised CIV VII is going to be available for XBOX ONE.....I will of course buy it, but this time I need to know it works, especially when they pile on the DLC

I'm so glad that Civ gets towns and cities. I will be honest, it's terrible practice to cut out part of your game and sell it as DLC on launch. On top of that even making a promo video on it... Pretty much literally selling Shawnee culture there...

Honestly I'm coming around the the idea of switching civilizations each age, and part of the reason is that it seems like it's allowed them to put extra love & attention into each individual civ. I'm guessing they wouldn't have had the bandwidth to make unique-looking units and buildings for each civ if they'd needed to do that for every unit/age in the entire game.

5:17 if each point increases by 3% it is a compounding effect and +10 would be 35% not 30%

Its actually 69% because you do 30% more damage and take 30% less damage, meaning you are (1.3*1.3) = 69% better I simply slipped the maths in my head somehow
