Pro-Palestinian protest moves off campus as LAPD moves in

As the Los Angeles Police Department began surrounding pro-Palestinian protesters at the University of Southern California, some of the demonstrators moved off campus. Police say those remaining on campus will be arrested for trespassing.

How can college students trespass at a college they are enrolled at? Why is standing there a crime if any other day, when there wasn't a political intent, it would not be? Seems like they are criminalizing political expression and not actual trespassing to me.
