I've been yelling at my screen about color correction/grading and export settings since the very first mtb video I saw. LOTS of terrible-looking footage and exports from amazing riders doing amazing things in amazing locations. I just want to see how cool it all looks. Instead: Nightmares. I worked in video production for a long time as an editor/motion graphics/colorist for TV commercials and marketing shorts. MTB videos are often frustratingly terrible-looking. When I've tried to explain it in the past we just end up in the weeds talking in cericles. Thanks for making this video so I can link it to people and say "watch this."

The upscaling trick is the one that makes the most difference for KZbin. No matter how good is the video or how much time you spent color-grading, it won't use the VP9 codec unless you upscale (or upload a native 4K video). It's especially noticeable on action videos. I always export in QuickTime, even on Windows. Very nice guide! I discovered the upscaling trick myself a while back, but some of your previous videos helped me with the color-grading, so I'm mostly following your DaVinci tips and camera settings and these helped me a lot!

Back when the GoPro Session was still popular for fpv drones, I used to film in the highest resolution in 4:3 then partially correct the fisheye distortion while stretching it to 16:9, then upscaled to 4k to get the best looking footage. Rumor was you had to have 1000+ subs before KZbin would start applying the better codec, but this was our workaround!

I've seen some actual medium sized KZbinrs that need to watch this video. Every since the first Resolve video on this subject my videos looks as good as yours. I'm about to buy a iPad Air or Pro to start editing videos on the road with Resolve (I have a Mac Studio otherwise...obviously not portable). Thanks for doing an updated version.

I use similar settings for the Project (Timeline Color Space: Rec.709-A. same for Output Color Space, so I dont separate color space and gamma) but while this works for Apple devices you should have mentions for PC users it's different. Also as far as I know when you render out it's best to use Color Space Tag: Rec.709 and Gamma Tag: sRGB (you're rendering not just for apple devices (Rec.709-A is the proper tagging for QuickTime).

Thanks for this. I started using Davinci Resolve after seeing your video on it. Like you I only use a few things but purchased Studio last year for faster renders. Great recommendation. I also use your settings for my GoPros. The thing I do different is, my videos are 4k 60fps for the main video I upload to youtube, but I've created a python script that outputs the video to multiple other formats (2k, 1k, 30fps, 24fps, vertical (youtube shorts and instagram)). Now to create a script to do all the uploading for me. I've found your mountain biking videos inspiring and your technical videos very informative. Now get out there and bumble down the trails.

Hello from France, I'm part of a company that sells GoPro / DJI / Insta360 and other brands (Sony / Canon and others). During my training at Sony France, I learned that it was necessary to shoot in the highest format possible. For example, on the GP12 in 5k30 or 4k60 to get the maximum detail per point. But BE CAREFUL: don't render a finished project in 5k or 4k, but rather in 2.7k. Because input and output codecs are different, you'll be applying modifications to your files to create a new one in other formats. As a result, you won't have exactly the same encoding as the h.264 and h.265 protocols. Finally, there are many variables that I'd be happy to explain in a private message so that Loam Ranger can make us a superb video on the technical details. Sorry for the mistakes.

Theres a chance we may not need to upscale our footage in the future if youtube decides to fully implement AV1, some 1080p videos with the AV1 codec I've seen look really good, even compared to VP9 4k. Only for big creators with lots of views though :/ For the time being we can only dream of our pixels looking that good😮‍💨

As someone using Windows Movie maker, I'm lost by this. Is that for pictures... Or does it apply to the whole vid imported? As light varies then, do u have to go thru all that every time ur footage goes into/out off treeline, etc? Main issue I find is grainy footage... Which seems to have got worse the more I try to tweek GoPro settings!

Goong to try and help here. I used davinci resolve a few years back so I know a little. This program is for video. If you are asking about the color grading then it can get complicated. But what he is doing in the vedio applies to the entire clip so even as the loght changes in the clip the same color grade is applied. Whit davinci it os possible to chamge the color grade throughout but I jave never done this. The granieness you are mentioning os most likely camera settings or how you are exporting your video. If you want to learn mor abour davinci resolve there are tons of good tutorials on youtube. Hope I could help and have nice day

4:51 - Da Vinci Resolve would be nice if it wasn't stuck in this ultradark mode with gray font on black background, as soon as they give the choice to switch to a lighter user interface with more contrast between font and background this is unusable since it gives me eye cancer.

@@RidesWithJake ok, then explain why this happens to me and two of my friends? I did alot of research on this issue and I’m not the only one. The forums are full. What I could find is that they changed it from version 17. They limited the bitrate for the free version. Best you can do is to set it very high, over 100k bitrate in order to reach 80k. Sometimes even let it on auto. Same video, multiple renders with same bitrate and the files are different everytime. Why do you guys say “nope” when this clearly happens to many people?

You are missing the point. By the end of the month my data runs out and is slow as hell. Some how I still watch videos. I watch because they are mtbers not because they are great at filming. If you are a mtber focus on that. If you are into filmography change your channel and focus on that.
