Stumbled across your video and hopefully can help with some of the questions being a Tulsa native. Pros: 1. Tulsa is very pretty, especially Tulsa proper. It's very hilly and tons of mature trees with parks every few miles. The outskirts/suburbs are more open spaces and you'll see plenty of cows/horses. 2. 4 seasons- while the weather can be crazy, we do get to experience all seasons. 3. The people, for the most part are pretty friendly. 4. There are about 1 million people in the Tulsa area now and the traffic tends to move decently, even during rush hour. 5. Broken Arrow, a suburb, has been named one of the best places to live recently. Cons: 1. Tulsa is number one or number two on the list for worst places to live if you have allergies. Between the grass, tree pollen, mold, flowers, and wind, allergy sufferers need to be constantly medicated. 2. While we do experience all 4 seasons, they are not constant and fluctuate rapidly. you can have 70/80- degree weather and the next day it's snowing. Tulsa can have very cold winters with a few instances of large snow fall or it can be a warm winter in the 60s. The summer heat can be bad especially with the humidity. Common to have temperatures of 100+ during July and part of August. while we do have the occasional earthquake (usually 2.0-4.0) the weather is different here. We have large thunderstorms throughout the year along with a lot of lightning. They are calming if you don't have to get out and drive in them. 3. Tulsa is in Tornado alley. While I live in and grew up in midtown now, Tornado sirens and taking cover is common during storm season. While there have been very large and dangerous tornadoes in OKC and throughout Oklahoma, Tulsa seems to be shielded from too much damage and injuries. While there is the occasional spin up in Tulsa major, the majority of the storms will hit on the outskirts, typically to the north in Owasso/Collinsville, Southwest including Sapaulpa/Jenks/Gennpool/Liberty/Mounds, and then to the Southeast in Coweta, and every now in then on the outskirts of Broken Arrow. Most of the time, taking cover in the hall or bathroom works. It outter lying areas and OKC where they have F4s and F5s I'd highly recommend a place with a tonrado shelter or below ground shelter. Weird fact, most homes in Oklahoma don't have basements-always heard its because of the type of soil. 4. The streets are always under construction. This seems to be common in a lot of cities so kinda normal. However, Tulsa likes to have multiple large scale street construction projects going on at the same time creating problems with traffic. The Broken Arrow expressway is busy and HWY 169 during rush hour is nascar mixed with road rage. People here do not know how to drive, they will constantly happily drive the speed limit in the left hand lane forcing traffic to go around them. This is against the law now. 5. Tulsa is mainly a manufacturing town with many manufacturing companies. This makes job hunting sometimes difficult if not working in manufacturing or the medical field. OKC has much more white collar jobs. 6. Tulsa is safe but you have to keep your eye out. The crime here is sporadic; you can have very nice neighborhoods a mile away from high crime areas ie: 61st and peoria. while there is crime in different neighborhoods all around Tulsa, there are common shootings and crime throughout north Tulsa. There is gang activity and west Tulsa/Sand springs until recently was number in the nation for meth use and making it (still high though). On the FBI crime statistics, Tulsa is number 20 in the nation for its homicide rate. The safer communities tend to be the suburbs. Kinda long but hopefully this helps out anyone asking. And hopefully the Cons don't outweigh your pros for living here. Tulsa has a decent night life, though as described not like larger cities. Dowtown has been building many new restaurants and bars over the last 5-10 years. Brookside, Utica Square, Cherry Street all have small neighborhood centers with shopping and places to eat/drink-unsually higher in cost. The city is growing and has been building thousands of new homes in the suburbs to try and keep up with the growth.

I’ve lived here all my life, been many places, and there is no place like Oklahoma, like Tulsa, Oklahoma. Thank you for your take on it. We’re glad to have you. As for tornadoes, yes, people who aren’t from here think that those are here all the time. I have never seen one. They are not even a serious threat very often in this area, definitely not as much and as often as outsiders think. I wouldn’t let that stop me from living here.

Born and raised in Tulsa but left Oklahoma! The reality is that if you're able to find an "in-demand" job that pays well (engineering, nursing, doctor, IT, trades, etc.), then you're set. If not, job hunting will be a VERY frustrating process! Racism in hiring people people of color is quite evident whether people want to admit it or not. Teachers are poorly paid, so they leave in droves. Taxes seem to used for something other than fixing the regular and toll roads. However, I wish you and your family success!

I am sincerely thinking about moving to Tulsa with my family and buying a home. I really don’t want to be in the city but I would rather be in a small town nearby. Do you have any recommendations of small towns that are within commuting distance of Tulsa?

I have been toying with the idea of moving to Tulsa for about four years. I want to buy a small condo for cash and live a relatively easy life. I visited two years ago and your video is pretty spot on. I am 57 is this a good place to meet people and how are the gyms there -- fitness is very important to me. My other option is moving to the condo that I own in Portland, OR. Currently I live in Richmond, VA (it use to be like Tulsa but it has grown up and is now the it place) and it is way too expensive.

Thanks for sharing Elizabeth! What have you decided? Are you now a resident of Tulsa? :)
@allthingseducation4 жыл бұрын
@@christietnebedum no not yet -- I have until August to decide -- that is when my lease is up. Either my condo in Portland, OR or Tulsa, OK (if I sell). Still going back and forth. Tulsa seems cheap but not much to do and Portland is exciting but crazy. Thank you for asking

Hmmm. I also moved here from Miami. Yes, traffic is NOTHING like Miami! That was a huge difference. And, yes, the taxes were a surprise: WHY does Oklahoma tax FOOD?! That is nuts! And cruel to people who struggle with low income. You go to the grocery store, buy $100 worth of produce, milk, meat, frozen veggies, a few frozen dinners-and then have to pay $110 for your $100 grocery bill! Sales taxes nearly 10% on food. That’s just mean. And no, none of those sales taxes seem to go to fix the roads! No sidewalks either. Bummer.

Chris Emani there are a few lake beaches (nothing like Florida, but okay nonetheless). Skiatook Lake, and Lake Eufaula (about 2 1/2 hours away) have beaches. Grand Lake o’ the Cherokees also has some decent beaches. Again, not Florida, but they exist. 😁
@ritadaniels31755 жыл бұрын
Yes, we do have beaches on the many fresh water lakes... Texas is the closest coastal area & that is accessible by airplane as the fastest transportation but cars take 10-12hrs driving😎

JEREMIAH That would depend on many things... area of town? I’ve only lived in a house I own for the past 20yrs? If you qualify or want to for income based that is an option but has possibilities for more drama than U might want? I would say $700.00/mo +utilities??? I would check on several things before moving? Have you spoken to VBC or Tulsa Chamber of Commerce about cost of living, etc?
