My main takeaway is that you sound fantastic in multiple genres. Makes me want to practice even more than it makes me want to try all the mouthpieces on the market.

I've just ordered the contemporary one for the Alto. Can't wait to test it

Wondering if this new MP is comparable to the discontinued Windy City Woodwinds 56 Select that was in partnership Theo Wanne.

I would love to see a comparison of the bari pieces

This will definitely be my next tenor mouthpiece! but now my question is: which Rovner ligature fits in?

Alto Selmer Jazz Flow caught my ear. Happy sound. You’d sound good on anything though.
@XB29SP15 күн бұрын
I purchased a Jazz Flow 7 and love it. I have a 62 MKVI and thought maybe the Selmer would match up well. Problems that would pop up in my playing with other pieces disappeared. Overtones are right on and intonation is great. Tone is on the bright side but not too much for me. Could not put it down. Thanks for your comparison! I’m sure the Theo is good too, but I like this JF.

Last year, I got a 20% promotional discount on a Theo Wanne Slant Sig 2 size 6 for tenor sax. I could have gotten something cheaper, but I also considered that bying a mouthpiece built in my home state justified paying a little more. On the Theo Wanne site, their recommended retail price for the Slant Sg 2 is currently $295. That was previously their cheapest tenor mouthpiece. Their next steps up were in the $400s and top ones just shy of $800. The TW website gives the new Essentials a $195 price tag. That certainly is more in the price range of the common Vandoren, Meyer, and Otto Link offerings. I will be curious to compare the new Essentials to my current TW mouthpiece.

Yes I will also be curious to try the Essentials in a comparison test against the signature TW pieces. I suspect there will be differences in performance and feel, but most likely not night and day. Jim

Och I dig the sound of these new jazz pieces :O Maybe I should get this one instead of the Otto link vintage :O
@saxworldwideАй бұрын
In defense of the Otto Link Vintage, this has a lot more 'bite' and vibrancy than the Tone Edge, which was used in this video.
@HuntersOAАй бұрын
@saxworldwide Yeah I had a lot ofback and forth yesterday and the vintage still sounds better to my taste :)

Well, I've got a tenor Jazz on order - to give the other half to give me for Xmas - I was "will I won't I change my order?" No. I'm happy with my choice.

Is the Essentials: Contemporary Tenor more restrictive than the Jazz?
@saxworldwideАй бұрын
It's sound spectrum is just on the brighter side, but it covers all of the same characteristics in the sense it has a solid core foundation to lean on, and then a huge amount of power on top. Probably too full on for straight ahead jazz for many, but could play in this style at a push.

What neck strap are you wearing when talking?

That's a Balam Premium Large strap. Great on Tenor!

Wuff! At these prices - and with this review - Theo is going to throw a spanner in a lot of works that are twice the price and even more. Jody Espina and Jay Metcalf for two. But hasn't he also shot himself in the foot? After all, as Jim says, Theo's own pieces are super costly. Or has he just started a price war which someone else may win? I'm thinking of Jay Metcalf's plastic stock tenor piece which costs just a third of the new Theo stable.
@saxworldwideАй бұрын
Interesting points, but I don't think anyone will be overly concerned. There's a place for all these mouthpieces that you mention. Jody already offers lower price options with his HR* and Jet series - in a sense this is Theo getting with the program! Jay's new plastic mouthpiece made in the Babbitt factory is excellent, but geared towards beginners
