regarding the food taste: companys DID change to lower/cheaper alternatives since the corona panic, for example if you look at most products they will have "palm oil" instead of normal sunflowr oil, this is a big change cause palm oil is tasteless and way way unhealthyer than normal sunflower oil. ofc there is more ingredients they changed to cheaper ones or swap ingredients with something similar in taste but is something else, the company's keep such changes unless called out.

In Denmark and food is unchanged. I believe that you can blame Britxit for some of it and economics downturn, like inflation, for the rest. The manufacturer will try to keep the prices the same by first lowering the volume of goods in packaging. Think from 250 to 200 grams of whatever goods in same packaging. Second they will use lower quality products to make those goods. Third they will hike the price.

Denmark is part of the EU thus party of a supply chain that swaped Sunflower oil to Palm oil for products, this is just one of many examples.

We have seen many such changes in weight, for example 3 tins of soup for £2 were 500g each, then smaller 400g but same price. The vegetable oil to palm seems to be a recurring theme!

In the US, the flavor of food has changed, but I only attributed it to the lack of alternatives as the ability for the masses to have farm fresh produce or meat readily available and being left with no alternatives left. Everything from butter to beef ((we glue our meat together)) or starch like noodles or rice have all changed. Fast food is cutting portions in half and even the sweet snacks at convenience stores have gotten smaller and worse in quality from their former.

Hey bud. Some 14 years ago I found myself living in Edinburgh and at the time I remember there being some kind of salt ban. Everything tasted bland and nasty, unless you went for a curry. I spent 2 years there and as an American, I was shocked. I mean everything was kind of a culture shock but I remember that most. Oh and the fact that you guys classified regular Mountain Dew as an energy drink over its sugar content. In the US it’s just a ordinary soda. Haha

The salt rules here are insane. I knew a bloke who ran a couple takeaways, and the council would come in on occasion, and buy one of EVERYTHING on the menu, to measure salt content, amongst other stuff. Told him to use less salt... Yep. Oh he sold dodgy smokes too, and I was in his shop by sheer chance when customs raided him. I'll tell the story about that one cast if I remember. Unbelievable really!

Here in the Alpine country the food tastes the same as ever, but when I was in the UK a few years ago I found the food a little bland to say the least.

We were always famous for bland food, I remember as a kid visiting Germany often and couldn't believe I was eating "sausage, potatoes and carrots" - like how do they make the same thing taste so much better. Years later the food here did improve, until 2-3 years ago, at least for me, it dropped right back off, with this weird taste to it

Mancunian here. Ready meals, and food from takeaways and many restaurants (especially chain restaurants) have gone way downhill. There was this Korean chicken place I used to order from probably twice a month in 2021 and I just started to order less and less over time. That was mostly because of cost rather than an appreciable drop in quality. Then a couple of months ago I ordered from them and it was fucking awful. What used to be really nice freshly battered and fried chicken with a really solid crunchy shell turned into supermarket freezer "fried" chicken with this sad soggy breading, and to top it all off they fucked the chips up too. Prices went up and the quality fell off a cliff. It's anecdotal but a lot of places feel like they've just gotten worse. Went to Miller and Carter (its a steakhouse chain) in the beginning of the month and the steaks and sides were the worst they've ever been, so it's not just cheap places taking a hit. Homecooked food has been fine though, probably tastes better than ever compared to eating out. Just costs more than it used to. Like a lot more.

I was going to ask if your sense of smell had changed, but if your gf has the same issue then it's unlikely to be that. Someone else mentioned a switch in oil types, which will have a big impact; one of the big attractants in fries is the oil.
