Stage mix just means they combined 2 different performances to make the video (the visual part) to avoid the performance from being taken down due to copyright. I think the actual song audio is only from 1 of the performances. I don't think any BTS fans will deny they use a backing track. Of course with intense choreography and running around a huge stage they have to catch their breath sometimes. But there is probably only a handful of performances where they just fully lip synced probably because they were required to. In an interview with Suga and Jin Jin said how difficult it was to sing and dance at the same at the beginning and so he hated singing live. But the other members of BTS said it was important that they had to sing live. They talked about how they would practice by running in place for 10 to 20 seconds before singing their part and they would also practice wearing oxygen deprivation masks too. Jin says when he goes swimming with his friends he can hold his breath underwater twice as long as them. I don't know if you were aware but this performance was from a 2 day online concert they had back in 2020, so there wasn't an actual in person audience. It was a gift to fans because their entire world tour was canceled back in 2020 due to the pandemic. Thanks for the reaction.

Correct.... the video is combined from both days.... the audio is just from 1 performance. They use backing tracks but always sing live over them.

I think the biggest difference with BTS and the lip sync thing is that yes, they use a backing track for most performances. However, when they choose to let the track take over due to heavy choreo etc., they don’t lip sync. There is no pretending they are singing. They just let the track take over, and come back live when they are ready. They plan it into their performances. It was a bid kerfluffle when Jimin did Lie live because people accused him of lip syncing. If you watch the performance, the times the track took over, he isn’t even trying to sing, just focusing on the choreo. He wasn’t trying to make people think he sang live during those parts, but Whalen he was singing, it was live. All to give the best performance possible to the fans. The artist knows when they can and can’t make it sound good. If you watch the BTS live version of Run BTS in Busan, they are dancing hard but you can still hear they are live.

I have seen them just not sing and let the backing track take that part, but that is rare and they didn't lip sync. They just took a break. They typically sing right after they do that. Suga has proven in concerts that he is not lip syncing. This compilation video probably made it look like it. They work out on treadmills to practice. I can understand you thinking that.

A lot of ARMY are very in tune with how the boys sound live or not. We're able to pick out different key changes or when one of them hits a random bad note or they're sick which effects their voice. I've seen them live twice and honestly I'm totally okay with backing tracks since I KNOW they're giving 110% when on stage and even get upset if they feel like they didn't perform as well as they wanted. I remember where Jin mentioned he doesn't sing one of his lines during Boy With Luv during the kick part of the choreo since he couldn't manage it without his voice cracking so he let the track cover it.

They do use backing tracks, but their mics are ALWAYS hot. This was an online concert held two days in a row (Map of the soul ON:E). They used the track from one performance and used the visuals from both days. They have NEVER lip-synched where they were "pretending" to sing live. You can always tell when it's the backing track or their live vocals, the backing track is for fullness/adlibs/and repetitive parts so the guys can focus on the main vocal or breathe during difficult choreo. Watch Jungkook's live performance of "My Time" from this same concert and you can easily see/hear how they us the backing track. There are multiple examples of BTS members from live concerts where they were sick and literally asked others to sing WITH them if their vocals fail. Also them purposefully NOT singing/rapping mid-sentence to prove their is no backing track at that part. RM has even purposefully rapped off-beat to prove it. This is one of the main reasons ARMY takes such offense to people assuming they are lip-synching, because it has been a constant slam for YEARS and the guys have gone out of their way to PROVE they sing live. The rappers actually INSISTED that the vocal line sing live during their music show performances when they first debuted.

I read once that backing tracks are used often because the arenas where artists perform are not built to include good acoustics. Not many singers can overcome bad acoustics without some help.
@DavidBraileyLive7 ай бұрын
While bad acoustics are a big issue, an added vocal track wouldn't really change the acoustics for the vocalists. If you notice in all of their live performances they have ear buds in, those are their monitors, everything they need to sing comes through there. The in ear monitors are perfect for any situation where the accoustics could cause feedback or if there are dead spots on the stage (pockets where the sound drastically lowers in volume).

You forget that BTS comes from Hiphop and was formed around underground rapper(s) RM (and Suga). Rappers hold their mics like that and they may have inevitable taught the vocalline to do that also. 🤭 The vocalline was taught after all after audition how to sing: Roughly from spring/early summer of 2011 for Jin and JK, late summer for V and spring 2012 for Jimin (he was without individual vocal lessons but sat in on V's and JK's lessons and sang any minute he could till 4 am or so just to wake up at 6:30 to go to school). They debuted in June 2013. Because you are absolutly right: this is not how you get the full sound - but it does not mean you get no sound. As pointed out - this is one vocalltrack but a merge of two different performances - they held the concert on two days. Personally I think the dancing at the end pulls you more in and also ito the message because the message is mental healing. You begin with a bad day and everything feels off but midnight means the start of a new day and the hope it may be better and that hope is shown into a more and more engaging choreography - they even form the clockhands and show it striking "zero o'clock". It strengthens the message. Thank you for our reaction! 💜

It's easier to understand the no lip syncing on the odd occassion they sound tired or winded. If you notice on really vigorous choreo the singer taking the lead is usually in the centre not dancing vigorously. It why their choreo always involves different BTS members coming to the centre. The one in the past with the most stable vocals whilst dancing is Jungkook and the longer the group stayed together the better they understood when to breath and how to adapt the choreo they were given. If you watch jungkooks pop up concert in Times Square watch where he makes a very obvious point of putting his mike down because some of the audience is far away from the screens and he wants them to see when it's the backing track. There was a period I noticed his stamina dancing and singing was reduced post covid but he seemed to recover. BTS was continuously filmed. One of the things Jungkkok is not credited enough for and is one of the reasons he's their lead singer is he can sing and rap every part. We have seen clips where members are saying to jungkook my voice is not good today. So he knows to come in and support their part. Sometimes singing along or harmonising or creating adlibs. He seems very spontaneous in how he will support them. We have never seen them lip sync except on one award show where they were told they had to. They were not pleased and were open about it. However I have seen them mouthing someone else's part ready for the hand off. Mainly Jin and we are talking really early on in their career.

This is not an official video, so the person who posted just mixed two live performances and took the sound from one of them. That is called a Stage Mix. Regarding the Lip sync they don’t do that. They use a backing track because usually their songs have a lot of ad libs. They play and interact with the backing track, they let the backing track to play a word or a sentence and keep singing live. I have seen them live several times and this is something they have talked about. So we know exactly how it is. They have some performances lip syncing but those are not called live presentations, and are called just performances and those are only to show a choreography. In those cases the sing without a mic some part of the song but without a live sound.

Often the differences in sound are minimal to most people’s ears, if they’re singing live, the sound engineers are incredible and they can use their magic to make the impact minimal. The microphones definitely aren’t special, but they’re very good microphones and cost more money than most make in a year, which is super helpful. The person who notices it the most and has to work around it, is the sound technician… they can really lose their cool over people using mics incorrectly.

As to the microphone hold - every single one of these vocalists learned how to sing well while in training to be part of BTS, and they all came after the first three members who were all rappers, and rappers hold their microphones just like that. These four guys learned their bad habits from their rapper members 😂 I can tell that they've been working hard on changing that habit in the past five years, but clearly they sometimes fall back on it unthinkingly...I kind of love it actually, because it's a reminder of the very close bond the seven men share and all the time they've spent together, working together, living together, over the past 13-14 years

There is a big difference between using backing tracks to support your vocals due to intense choreography and flat out lip syncing. There is probably only a handful of performances in their 11 years as a group where they entirely lip synced. They know it's important to sing live.
@fierte8 ай бұрын
I keep wondering if the word lip sync has different meanings in different industries. A lip sync performance to me is when people do not sing live at all. Instead they just move their mouth to a pre-recorded audio. BTS has next to never (certain Korean TV stations demand a lip sync performance for their audio purposes) done that. If they are not singing live (carried by the backing track), they do not move their mouth and instead let the backing track play while they focus on the choreography. In other performances where they dance and sing, they have an audio mix of backing track and their live singing in order to have sufficient boost on the vocals. None of this constitutes as "lip syncing" in any way. Perhaps industries need to agree on what it means to lip sync before accusations are thrown around? Because I know of artists who are barely moving and still lip sync (zero live singing) the whole performance.
@georgiana31128 ай бұрын
@@fierte This! I 1000% agree, and I always wonder why people say they lipsinc when they are obviously singing over a backup track. And yes, when they are not singing at all they don't pretend and let the track go on. For me using a backing track especially with hard choreography and singing over it live is very different to just pretending to sing but not doing it, they also may have had to do that at some point, especially at the beginning because some korean music show required it back then.
@sc33h3o38 ай бұрын
@@crystalsnow1138yes also I noticed it was only early in their career on some of those Korean TV shows when it would be lipsynced.

Yes but in the West lipsync means the person is not singing at all, bts never do that, I notice that bc in songs one phrase might have to be interrupted by a vocal layer interjecting said phrase and a human cant sing two parts at once, when this happens they don't lip sync they'll let the backing track part play and then interject their own voice at that moment. Or, if dance choreo is intense there may be a moment or two where they rely on backing track live and then they don't lipsync/ do any pretense moving their lips. But in terms of western notion of lip sync I've only seen a very few from early in their career in certain Korean tv shows. But to imply they do American style lipsyncing, let alone as a norm, it's not correct and you should choose your wording more carefully.
